A device I created to save the US economy
"Los Angeles, CA - Artist Marc Horowitz plans to save the nation's banks... with his body. Marc will use his body to create abstract works in the same vein as Jackson Pollock and Picasso.
Marc Horowitz has constructed The Recessionator, a machine designed to make quick corporate art. The Recessionator sprays drab and muted multicolored paint into the air as Marc, in goggles and an all-white jumpsuit, leaps from a trampoline, flies through the paint, and lands on a big canvas, thereby creating a painting.
Marc took one of his Recessionator paintings to a Washington Mutual bank and GAVE it to them as a fail-proof investment. In a matter of months, WAMU will be able to sell the painting in order to stay solvent through these economic down times.
Marc explains that hundreds of these paintings can be made in a day and sent to banks everywhere creating hope in these dark times.

Lilly Hoist Safety Controller
A brief history of Logan Actuator Co. and Logan Engineering Co.
In 1915, Henry H. Logan, while working as a mechanic at Anaconda Mining Co. in Butte, Montana, came into contact with William Lilly. Mr. Lilly had designed a device to provide safety protection for the Mine Hoist, to help prevent overspeeding and overtravel. Mr. Lilly's device was designed in such a way that it relied on electrical power being on, which made the device "Non-Fail-Safe." Mr. Logan redesigned the device and produced the first "Lilly Hoist Safety Controller."
In 1917, looking to begin production of the Controller, Mr. Logan moved to Chicago, and eventually connected up with Duro Metal Products, a producer of hand tools. He made arrangements to manufacture the Controller from their factory, under the Duro name.
On January 1, 1935, Mr. Logan moved out of the Duro plant, and formed Logan Engineering Co. He built a small, but dedicated workforce dedicated to the belief that a superior product will always win over the market. Logan Engineering Co. continued to produce the Lilly Hoist Controller, in several variations, and built a worldwide reputation for providing a quality product.
The original plant was on the second floor of a four story building at 4541 Ravenswood Ave. in Chicago. After about 4 years, as the business expanded, new space was required and a half city block was purchased, 4901 W. Lawrence Ave., and a manufacturing and office facility was built, comprising some 14,000 square feet. This was paid for in full, along with dividends and bonuses within one year.
In 1940, Logan Engineering was approached by a sales organization, representing, in part, Montgomery Wards to explore the possibility of producing a small metal cutting lathe, so that Wards could compete with Sears and their Atlas Lathe. Logan Engineering agreed, and the first Montgomery Wards Power Kraft Lathes were built. In 1941, Logan decided that in addition to providing the Lathe for Wards, they could produce a lathe and market it under the Logan name.
The demand for Lathes was such that the plant was expanded almost immediately to over 35,000 square feet. By 1949, business had grown to where the plant and office areas had grown to several buildings comprising over 62,000 square feet, with approximately 120 employees.
During the next 30 years, Logan Engineering manufactured many different variations of the Logan Lathe, all driven by Customer demand. Logan built Lathes of 9", 10", 11", 12", 14" and 15" swing size with bed lengths from 33" to 68". In the 1960's, they built the "Electri-Matic", a 15" swing Automatic Turret Lathe. From 1940 to 1971, approximately 90,000 Lathes were built by Logan Engineering Co., and sold under the Logan and Wards names.
During all this time, part of the operation of Logan Engineering continued to dedicate itself to the production of the Lilly Hoist Controller. More models were developed, and options, usually at customers request, were added. Other mine related products were also developed, including the Logan Hoist Recorder, the Logan Recording Tachometer, and the Pump. The Logan Aridifier, a device to remove contaminants from compressed air lines was also manufactured.
In 1969, the company was sold to Houdaille Industries, and in 1971, the operation was moved to Tennessee, to consolidate it with other manufacturing plants they had. At that time, Henry Logan decided he wanted to retain control of the Controller division, and bought that part of the company back from Houdaille. He then formed Logan Actuator Co., and started operations in a different building, only a few blocks from the previous site of Logan Engineering Co. The "Actuator" in the name came from a device Mr. Logan had designed, which was a hydraulic lifting device, intended for the Mining and Steel Mill Industries. The Logan Actuator was never marketed.
Several years later, it was discovered that Houdaille had allowed the registration of the name "Logan Engineering Co." to lapse, and Logan Actuator registered it as a non-operating company, to protect the long earned, and well known, family name.
In 1977, Henry H. Logan passed away at the age of 95. He had continued as President of Logan Actuator Co., and was still very active in the daily operations of the company, right up until his death. George H. Logan, who had joined his father in the business after leaving the Army at the close of World War II, took over the role of President, and Chief Executive Officer, as he remains today. In 1995, Scott S. Logan, grandson of Henry, who joined the company in 1978, was named Vice President of Manufacturing.

I'm starting a set called "Hipstamatic Moments, mostly composed of images captured using my mobile phones. These imaging devices are almost always with us so they are ready to capture many everyday moments when our better cameras are safely tucked away in the camera bag at home. The images captured cannot be compared to those equipped with much larger sensors, but as Chase Jarvis said in his website, "The best camera is the one that's with you." He even authored a book of the same title.
I was shopping for an iPod for my dear niece last December at my local BestBuy electronics store when this awesome sunset presented itself when I stepped out of the store. I reached for my iPhone4 and snapped a few images then sped home to get my DSLR camera. Home was less than two miles away but the awesome sunset had already faded by the time I got my DSLR ready to shoot. I felt really bad thinking I had lost a great opportunity to capture such a dramatic sunset, until I uploaded the images from the hipstamatic. That sunset was so dramatic, almost any camera would have been acceptable.

Here is a device that I got 12 months ago while touring the UK.
I met up with Tootdood and The Neepster there, who showed me the city, and Mike (Toot) had a wrist strap that impressed me.
Mike lies to take street shots from the hip, and has got very good at it. I decided to buy a strap at the camera store there, as I had never seen them before.

When I got back to Oz, I removed the Canon neck strap and installed the new Jacobs wrist strap, and it has never been off since.
I love it. It clicks in place and there is no risk of dropping the camera as you can see from the shots below.

With grants provided by the Australian Government and Albatross Foundation, and in partnership with the International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE - Australia), IRIS will develop refraction services during 2010 & 2011 at all the eye clinics it supports in Cambodia. As well as training all clinic staff in providing people with refraction and low vision devices, the grants will establish optical workshops that can make and dispense glasses at government eye clinics IRIS supports in Kampong Cham, Pursat, Kampot and Battambang and the locally run organisation, Battambang Ophthalmic Care Centre. Eye screening camps will be staged twice a month by clinic staff to identify people who have visual impairement and need glasses or low vision devices, as well as identifying people who need surgical treatment. Roughly around 325,000 homes across the US are broken into every year, usually in plain view. Altogether there are about 2.5 million burglaries reported and 66% of those are in homes. Most break-ins happen during the day when people are most likely to be out and about.
There are certain things you can do to protect your home in order not to become a statistic. We’ve rounded up 4 tips to protect your home, your family, and belongings better.
Keep valuables out of sight
It’s not difficult for anyone to just walk up and take a peek through one of your windows and see what you have lying around if you don’t have thick curtains or forgot to close them on your way out. While some items are not really meant to be moved around, like a TV screen, others are easier to move and keep out of view. Laptops, mobiles, all other small devices, purses, and wallets can all be put away when you’re out of the house. Even if your purse or wallet is actually empty and the mobile is old, a burglar wouldn’t know that, and it would just be too tempting in their eyes.
Wire up
It doesn’t matter if you live in a building, a house, or own a shop or any other business, you can use a security system to put your mind at ease. If moving into a new home or looking to sell your old one that’s a good time for when to get a wired security system. Having a wired system can increase the cost of your home when selling, and may also have custom made options that wireless security systems do not always offer.
Don’t provide hiding places
Your landscape, tall trees, and bushes are lovely to sit near and under. They provide nice shade on hot days but they also provide more opportunity for thieves and the likes to hide in. Keep shrubs and trees trimmed, at least trimmed enough that they do not block windows. Besides that, don’t leave items outside. Many people will leave a ladder outside after doing some roof repair, for example. This is inviting a would-be thief to the upper floors of a house where windows might be often unlocked.
Change locks when necessary
Anytime you or someone else loses a key to the house, change the lock. You can never be sure if the key was actually lost or if someone got their hands on it, giving them more than easy access to your home. If you rent out a home, it’s also recommended to change locks after a tenant leaves.
You can never be too safe
There really is no such thing as being too safe when it comes to protecting your home. Be an alert homeowner and find out more ways to protect your property. Always keep all doors, windows and the garage locked. You can ask someone you trust to keep a watchful eye if you have to leave home for an extended period. As we say, better to be safe than sorry.

Le Redoutable was the lead boat of the class of ballistic missile submarines in the French Marine Nationale. Commissioned in 1971, was the first French SNLE (Sous-marin Nucléaire Lanceur d'Engins, "Device-Launching Nuclear Submarine"). The submarine was decommissioned in 1991 and in 2000 it was removed from the water and placed in a purpose-built 136 metres dry dock at Cité de la Mer and turned into an exhibition (after the nuclear reactor had been removed!). It is the largest submarine open to the public and the only near-complete ballistic missile submarine hull open to the public.
The Cité de la Mer ("city of the sea") is a maritime museum in Cherbourg, Normandy. Opened in 2002 it contains the Redoutable (a nuclear submarine), an exhibition about the Titanic which called at Cherbourg on it's fateful maiden voyage, a collection of aquatic vehicles, and the deepest aquarium in Europe.
This Ashtech GPS device was just sitting alone in the median on a Saturday afternoon in Westminster, MD. What is up with that? I didn't see anyone around, but maybe that white van back there has something to do with it. What and why is what I am wondering.
During a recent exploration to Kepler22b, an exoplanet from the Kepler-16 binary star system, Boris Chimp 504 found some metallic objects on its surface. Though the origin of these objects are totally unknown, it's probably a piece of technology from an extraterrestrial civilization. Boris has sent these objects in an hyperspace capsule to the Vladivostok Space Center, on Earth.
It is believed that it's a part of a machine, a mechanism or a device of some kind. Recent investigations on the objects lead to believe that it is an interface to control the position and orientation in space and time of something bigger, a spaceship maybe.
These objects are being presented in a series of interactive installations called "Non Human Device".

Sandsfoot Castle and gardens with views across Portland Harbour.
Known historically as Weymouth Castle, an artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII near Weymouth, Dorset and formed part of the King's Device programme to protect against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire, completed by 1542.
Sandsfoot saw service during the English Civil War, when it was held by Parliament and Royalists. It was withdrawn from military use in 1665.
This is a photograph from the Kinnegad 5KM Road Race, Fun Run, and Walk held in Kinnegad, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Wednesday 10th July 2013 at 20:00. The race is organised by Coralstown/Kinnegad GAA Club who also provide the facilities for Race HQ, parking, and after-race refreshments. This is the 4th running of this race and each year it has got better and better. This year there were over 300 participants who took to the line on one of the hottest days of the Irish summer of 2013. The fast relatively flat course provided a great opportunities for fast times and personal bests for all participants.

Overall Race Summary
Participants: Approximately 300 people took part in tonight's race with runners, joggers, walkers, and families involved.
Weather: The race found itself in the middle of Ireland's summer heatwave. Temperatures at the race start were well over 25C which made Kinnegad feel like somewhere in southern Spain. The shaded kilometers in Boreen Bradach were a welcome relief to all of the runners, joggers, and walkers. A slight westerly breeze also helped to cool runners down.
Course: This is a fast flat course. The course is right handed. The course starts on the old N4 Sligo Road (goo.gl/maps/JWpnK) and proceeds to quickly turn right onto the Killucan road. There is a downhill stretch at the 1km mark where just after the course takes a right turn onto Boreen Bradach (a well known walking route). The race stays with the boreen, which has a very good road surface, until about 800 meters to go where the race emerges into a housing estate. The final right turn is onto the main street for the finish (goo.gl/maps/es2Up).
Location Map: Start/finish areaS on Google StreetView and Google Aerial provided above and below on this description. Kinnegad is very accessible on the motorway and national road network of Ireland positioned at the intersection of the M4/N4/M6/N6 roads.
Refreshments: A great spread of refreshments, served outdoors, were provided in the club house afterwards.

How can I get a full resolution copy of these photographs?
All of the photographs here on this Flickr set have a visible watermark embedded in them. All of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available offline, free, at no cost, at full image resolution WITHOUT watermark. We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us. This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.
