In partnership with Envoy, American Airlines, the Dallas ISD, The Medal of Honor Foundation, Independence Corps, Microsoft, the Buzz Aldrin Foundation, Florida Institute of Technology, and Kennedy Space Center, students from four Dallas high schools were provided a once in a lifetime opportunity with a historical trip to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Envoy provided a private charter to bring the students to the space center, and became the first civilian airliner with passengers to land on the runway where the Space Shuttle landed when returning from a mission.
Beginning with a kick off dinner inside Envoy’s maintenance hangar at DFW International Airport, and a good nights rest at the Sheraton DFW Airport Hotel, everyone boarded the beautiful E-175 aircraft provided by Envoy, and took off for Cape Canaveral! After the historic landing on the runway, students were taken to the Astronaut Training Experience center for a full day of training, learning, and working in teams to accomplish their mission goals. Over the next 3 days the students were also given the opportunity to tour the center, work in the Mars training laboratory, and fly simulators at the Florida Institute of Technology with their aviation program. All the activities were tailored to provide the students exposure and inspiration to purse career paths in STEM related fields. Combining STEM activities with the Medal of Honor Foundation’s Character Development program was also a driving force behind the trip and experience. Medal of Honor Recipient, Gary Littrell, and VP of Education for the foundation, Cathy Metcalf, joined the students, and provided valuable lessons on Character, Integrity, Commitment, Sacrifice, Patriotism, and Citizenship. Michael Jernigan, USMC (Ret.), also joined the students providing inspiration and assistance to all.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this amazing trip possible, and provided the students with an educational experience of a lifetime. Photography proudly provided by Reel Heroes Media.
