The Gevabox 66 (also sold as the Adox 66) is a simple, bakelite camera, made from 1950 till 1953. It has a f/8 meniscus lens and takes 12 pictures of 6x6 on 120-rollfilm.

The camera looks so beautiful! The pictures however show a lot of unsharpness. Only a relatively small centre area is sharpish...

I had difficulty winding the 120 film. Many pictures showed linear scratches as a result. Moreover the aperture was stuck on f/11, but that was probably not a bad thing in itself, considering the lack of quality of the pictures at f/11, let alone f/8.

The Nimbus clouds are heavy precipitation and thunderstorms-laden clouds with both massive vertical developement/thickness (Cumulus-,not visible from below, but presumably from the darkness it generates and the troubled clouds bases) and horizontal development (-Nimbus "stratiformis", the cloud part visible from below covering the entire sky), appearing to be capable of worsening the weather in the area; these clouds are part of rather intense occluded fronts, which bring rapid deterioration in weather with continuous, heavy rainfall and some thunderstorms in the middle.

This is indeed happening westward/background, relative to the Koper inland area (that's in northwestern Istra peninsula), so toward the Adriatic Sea and the eastern plains of northern Italy.

After an eighteen year developement the DS was unveiled at the 1955 Paris Motorshow, styled by Italian sculptor and industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni it had an aerodynamic body design and innovative technology, including hydro pneumatic self levelling suspension. Initially deemed expensive the DS was joined by a cheaper less technical ID model in 1957. The DS was third in the 1999 Car of the Century and during it's twenty year production sold nearly 1.5 million.

In 1962 the DS received a more streamlined nose to increase the aerodynamic efficiency, still retaining the the round head lights.

In 1967 a second restyle brought in the streamlined covered lights on this example. The design had a pair of lights under each cover, the inner set swivelled with the steering wheel to allow drivers to see hazards on turns, this was not allowed in the USA at the time so a version with four exposed fixed head lamps was made for the US market.

In 1965 a luxury upgrade, the DS Pallas (after Greek goddess Pallas), was introduced. This included comfort features such as better noise insulation, a more luxurious (and optional leather) upholstery and external trim embellishments. From 1966 the Pallas model received a driver's seat with height adjustment.

I went for a drive last weekend and saw this dilapidated barn in Shakopee, MN. It seems to be the last vestige of the rural culture that is quickly being replaced with suburban developement in the little towns that surround Minneapolis. I thought I'd photograph it before it is gone and a row of townhouses takes it place.

Trichogamma evanescens (wasp) Portrait

The wasp Trichogramma evanescense lays its eggs into the EGGS of moths (here: Sitototroga cerealella). The complete developement from the egg to the adult takes place inside this egg. Since moth eggs are quite small (ca. 0.4 mm in this case), adult trichogramma wasps belong to the smallest insects in the world (max. 0.5 mm). With only 10000 neurons, it has the smallest brain of any insect, yet this is enough to survive.

Harnessing of the Atom

Amos L. Wallace, Western Red Cedar, 1967

Through a visual language typical of kooteeyaa (totem pole), this fifteen foot carving reveals aspects of Alaska's American & Russian history, humankind's efforts to control energy, & Tlingit spirituality. It suggest an interesting parallel between the Tlingit story of how light was bestowed to the world of humans, & the developement of nuclear energy by 20th century physicists.

At the top of the pole is the Bald Eagle, representative of the United States. Next is a Russian Orthodox priest, illustrating the influence of Russia & Christianity on Alaska. Below is a human being holding the sun, which has been released by Raven, the final figure shown.

Amos Wallace played an important role in drawing national attention to the arts of Tlingit people, & his work can be found in numerous collections throughout the United States.

Amos Wallace, 1967

Harnessing of the Atom

Western Red Cedar

This kooteeyaa (totem pole) tells the story of the harnessing of the atom. The pole was carved in 1967 by Tlingit carver Amos Wallace of Juneau. His Tlingit name was Jeet Yaaw Dustaa of the T;akdeintaan Clan of the X'aakw Hit Tlingit (Freshwater-marked Coho House). Wallace, an artist who worked in many differnet media was renowned for his carving & engraving. He died in 2004.

In 1976, th epole was installed here at what is now the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. The traditional method of mounting a kooteeyaa involves digging a hole for the lower end of the pole to rest in. Rocks line the hole to provide drainage & stability. By 2003, the kooteeyaa had developed a distinct lean & was in danger of severe damage. It was removed from its original, traditional mount. A new Aluminum support post was mounted in a concrete base to provide better stability & prevent further damage. Traditionally, a leaning pole might sometimes be propped up, but once fallen, it is generally left to return to the earth.

Harnessing of the Atom is 15 feet tall & carved of western red cedar. Cedar is the most commonly used tree for craving kooteeyaa because it withstands the elements so well. Decay is natural in kooteeyaa exposed to the effects of wind, weather, insects, & a hard life outside in the Southeast Alaska weather. Due to the organic material, cracks are natural & should not be seen as a flaw in the carving.
