In 1892, a cholera epidemic devastated the docklands population, convincing the city of Hamburg to demolish the warren of overcrowded, unhygienic alleyways and start again. First came the Speicherstadt, the largest warehouse district in the world built between 1885 and 1927. Then came the Kontorhaus district. Both are part of the World Heritage site designated in 2015.
The Sprinkenhof is an architectural masterpiece and one of the great examples of Brick Expressionism, with lovely details like the intricate, late-art deco interior staircase and one of the few remaining paternoster elevators. Designed by architects Fritz Höger and the Jewish brothers Hans and Askar Gerson in 1927, the Sprinkenhof took 16 years to build in three phases. Construction was delayed by economic crises and political upheaval, the death of Hans Gerson in 1931, his brother’s persecution and eventual exile in 1938. The building was finally inaugurated in May 1943. Two months later, Allied firebombs gutted parts of it, causing damage that took years to repair.
My darling Honey died very suddenly on Sunday night and we are all devastated. May she rest in peace happy over the rainbow bridge playing with our beloved Benny, Benji and Truffle.
Kilfarrasy Beach, Copper Coast, Ireland.
This shot was taken shortly after Storm Ellen hit the south coast of Ireland, casting on shore phenomenal amounts of kelp and seaweed that had been ripped from the ocean floor onto the beach. Also, the odd dead dolphin.
With the world teetering yet again on the edge of nuclear devastation with Russia contemplating a civil war and moving tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus I was brought back to one of my favorite lyric poems, "There Will Come Soft Rains" By Sara Teasdale.
This scene of devastation was created using Bing Image Creator with a bit more gloom added with the help of Photoshop and Redfield filters for the Slider Sundays group. If not a happy Sliders Sunday at least a contemplative one...
There Will Come Soft Rains
Sara Teasdale
1884 –1933
(War Time)
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;
And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white,
Robins will wear their feathery fire
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone.
Sara Teasdale was an American lyric poet. She was born Sarah Trevor Teasdale in St. Louis, Missouri, and used the name Sara Teasdale Filsinger after her marriage in 1914. In 1918 she won a Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 poetry collection Love Songs.
Due to intense harm and evil choices of others you are faced with so much darkness, devastation, difficulty, physical and emotional pain and suffering, unpredictability, fear, terror and so many other challenges that almost completely crush you which you are unable to express with words. And amidst all this suffering, when it feels like too much and you want to quit trying to survive, you work to keep looking for light and moving forward in healthy ways even when it seems impossible. Thank you for pressing on at a pace appropriate for you by working to care for yourself through many forms of nourishment, working to receive healthy support through God’s faithfulness and people who deeply care for you, through rest, tears, and graceful acknowledgment of truth and reality. You still have a long way to go on this journey and it is amazing how far you’ve come.

The goal here was to make a freakishly impractical weapon that could deal a lot of damage.
While the Devastator is perfectly capable of living up to its name, using it without adequate preparation could result in serious harm to the user and all those nearby.
...and it could be yours with only three easy payments of $5.99 USD!!!!!!

Hurricane Helene caused widespread devastation in Western North Carolina. This picture I took Friday a half block from my house. The dam at the WNC Nature Center on the Swannanoa River was ripped apart. My house has a tree on it and three came down in my driveway but we are okay and the damage to the house is minimal. Water will likely be unavailable for two to four weeks. The hope is power will be restored Friday. Uploading this picture is the first internet related task I have been able to do since Thursday. I have some videos, but cannot upload
Pelted, awash, struck, torn to splinters, ravaged, forlorn, desolate, abandoned, ransacked, forsaken, wrecked, cast away, strafed, assaulted, drenched, clobbered, deserted, rudderless, smacked, stormy, fucked...
That's how life has been ever since you've been gone.
Yo, finally a new photo! This was really fun to shoot with my brother and I'm very happy about the final outcome. I love big clouds and storms, and this is candy to my eyes. I was so happy when it all came together in photoshop. Oh the joy it is to edit. :)
The photo of the tornado is not mine (but I'm sure you knew that). I'm not sure who's it is though, but it's not like I'm making money off of my photography, haha.
2014 on the horizon? WHAT. Crazy. I'm really looking forward to Christmas holidays and the new year. Hope y'all are having as good a time as I am!
This image is dedicated to all people who lost their home in the CZU Lightning Complex in the San Mateo and Santa Cruz Counties in California in August and September 2020 . There is a sad story behind each of the 1500 structures that were destroyed. Personally I can’t imagine how it feels like to loose one's home. Especially in this difficult time it is important to find support with loved ones and friends. We wish all of you strength and resilience to rebuild, and overcome the hardship.
We went into a forest burned by wildfire with a model friend to take a series of photos.
I processed a realistic, a paintery, and a photographic HDR photo from a RAW exposure, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

A heavy storm has passed the region where I live. A near meadow with many poplars totally ruined.

My first plane in a long time! I decided to build the TBD, mainly because I'm probably going to do a VT-8 tribute at some point. I personally think it's pretty nice. I tried to have the bombardier/radioman in the plane, but it didn't look right when I attempted it. I also would've liked to incorporate the forward hanging torpedo, but it doesn't look very good in the landing position. The engine and rear-facing .30s are Capt. Hill's design.
Thanks guys!

The Basilica of Esztergom holds many secrets and is a fascinating testimony of Hungarian history. The construction of the imposing building took 54 years and was shaped by three famous architects.
Originally, on the site of the basilica in the 18th century stood a theater known for its animal fights. But in 1838 a huge flood devastated the city, which became known as the Great Flood of Budapest. The square where the basilica stands today rose from the plain of Budapest and provided refuge for hundreds of people during the disaster. The survivors saw their fate as a miracle of God and decided to build a church at the place of their survival. However, it took several years before construction actually began.
The construction of the basilica finally began in 1851 under the supervision of József Hild. Later, the renowned architect Miklós Ybl took over and replaced the earlier classical style with neo-Renaissance concepts. Ybl was one of the most famous Hungarian architects of his time and also designed the State Opera House and the building of the Burggarten Bazaar. Work on the basilica was finally completed in 1905 by József Kauser.
During World War II, the basilica served as a refuge for many refugees and also protected the valuable collection of the Hungarian National Archives from bombing in the basement of the massive building. However, the church, like much of the city, was badly damaged and required extensive renovation. In 1983, the city government finally decided to completely renovate the basilica, and the work continued until August 2003.
The Esztergom Basilica is not only an impressive architectural masterpiece, but also the largest and highest-ranking church in the country. As the cathedral of the Primate of the country, it has a special significance for Hungary. Already in the first decade of our statehood, Stephen I, the Holy King, endowed the first church at this place. The Castle Hill of Esztergom has always played an important role in Hungarian history since the founding of the state and maintained its significance despite the turbulence and challenges of the times. With its picturesque location above the Danube bend and the natural beauty marked by the surrounding mountains, the place was both easily accessible and isolated, easily defensible and at the same time attractive and relaxing.
So it is not surprising that the castle hill of Esztergom became first the seat of the Hungarian kings and later the most important center of the Hungarian Catholic Church. The Basilica of Esztergom stands as an impressive symbol of Hungary's faith, history and beauty, attracting visitors from all over the world.
