Forlorn monochrome taken on the bus.

I found out that the person in the background, on Tyler's shoulder, who's name is Kate, is featured all over this other photostream than just my two photos that feature her in the background.

My final project for my Large Format class. All photographs shot on 4x5 film.

"The opposite of war isn't peace, it's creation." - Rent.

The idea originally was to create a peaceful looking landscape using smoke which has graceful movements when looked at closely and without fire. What I ended up happening when I developed the film was the look of an after war scene, the remains of a location that at one time was peaceful, happy and full of life. I wanted to create peace, but I create war instead.

About Kodachrome Basin State Park

Kodachrome Basin is a state park of Utah, USA. It is situated 5,800 feet (1,767.8 m) above sea level, 12 miles (19 km) south of Utah Route 12, and 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Bryce Canyon National Park. It is accessible from the north from Cannonville by a paved road and from the south by Road 400, a dirt road from the Page, Arizona area to Cannonville, passable for most vehicles in dry conditions. A longer but paved route to Tropic from the south is also available via US-89 and SR-12.

Some geologists believe Kodachrome Basin State Park was once similar to Yellowstone National Park with hot springs and geysers, which eventually filled up with sediment and solidified. Through time, the Entrada sandstone surrounding the solidified geysers eroded, leaving large sand pipes. Sixty-seven sand pipes ranging from two to 52 meters have been identified in the park.

Evidence near the park suggests that Native Americans were the first to wander through the area. Around the turn of the 20th century, cattlemen from Cannonville and Henrieville used the basin as a winter pasture. In 1948 the National Geographic Society explored and photographed the area for a story that appeared in the September 1949 issue of National Geographic. They named the area Kodachrome Flat, after the then relatively new brand of Kodak film they used. In 1962 the area was designated a state park. Fearing repercussions from the Kodak film company for using the name Kodachrome, the name was changed to Chimney Rock State Park, but renamed Kodachrome Basin a few years later with Kodak's permission.

Desolation Canyon is a remote canyon area in eastern Utah. The Green River flows through the canyon. The canyons offer outstanding scenery and interesting geologic formations.

Photograph was taken in 1976.

Took the little Nikkor 28mm AiS for a walk down to Chatham today. Nice lens if you remember to focus.

Desolation – Atacama Desert, Chile

This shot comes from the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile. The Atacama is considered to be the driest place on earth, some parts of it having not seen rain for hundreds of years. In fact, this condition has put these areas beyond the threshold of life, where even specialized microorganisms known as extremophiles—found in conditions such as the polar ice caps and nuclear waste—cannot survive. It may seem odd then to suggest this image as a metaphor for hope. Yet, since taking this shot over two years ago, I’ve been drawn back to it again and again. There’s something about the landscapes of the desert that touch my spirit in a way no other environment can. I believe that what we see in the aridity, solitude, and desolation of the desert speaks to things that we often experience inside. I’m intrigued by the number and variety of biblical references to such desolation, from Ezekiel’s vision of the Valley of Dry Bones, to the desert wanderings of the Israelites, to a place of hiding and refuge for David and Elijah, and to Sarah’s ache from a barren womb, longing to be filled with new life… While these cracks in the earth and the starburst of light through the lens speak of desolation, emptiness and loss, I think they also suggest part of the necessary preparation for hope to enter into our souls. Hope must know its own sorrow and emptiness before it finds its consummation. Very similarly, I’m slowly learning the difference between looking at the world from 30,000 feet, and going along the ground, getting into the dirt of my story in order to find new life, where the risks are much greater. As I gazed into the landscape that framed this image, I found myself both aware of this sense of emptiness inside, as well as strangely drawn with great longing for something more—the desire that is necessary to give birth to hope.
