Desolate by Rachel Hurrell

This was part of a series of images used for a brief called "Desolate" where we had to create a set of images of what we feel portrays desolation and for me that was someone smoking, ruining their body and corrupting their heart. This was one of 5 images shot in a park in Oxford during winter at night, the first image was of a male sitting on a bench alone with a long path leading away from him, the second was lighting a cigarette, the third was this image smoking it, the fourth was the path leading away from the empty bench and the fifth image was of a lambs heart that I had stuck wire through to symbolize the restrictive restraint that becoming addicted to smoking has on ourselves.

Because this was taken at night with no flash, I had to use a slow shutter speed and a tri-pod, the shutter speed was 2 seconds at f/3.5, because the shutter speed was so slow, I was able to capture the flames and the sparks that the lighter emitted.

It's been almost 15 years since a wildfire burned through this forest at Mt Falcon Open Space.

I've been trying to capture this burned out forest for a couple of months...with not much luck. Today, the evening sun was giving us great contrast on the hulks and the hills behind were cloaked in haze which provided a lot of depth. I'm pretty pleased with these.
