The Pines at Fort Peck Lake Montana has to be one of the most little known vacation spots in the state--if not the country! Fort Peck Lake its self is extremely isolated, but once you have driven almost an hour through the desolate ranch land on a bumpy gravel road past NO houses at all (not even abandoned ones!), you crest a set of hills and low and behold you see hills upon hills of pine trees with a shining blue lake in the distance. The only way I can describe it is like a cross of the Black Hills of South Dakota and an empty lonely lake. This place is different than any you have ever been and so beautiful you can hardly believe it! There are a scattering of summer homes, but none of them are terribly fancy. If I could have a vacation home in one place in America I would probably pick one here.

Here is a video my husband took of the Pines, but turn down your volume if you watch! The wind was loud that day:

While exploring the Cape Hatteras lighthouse on Hatteras Island, I was lucky enough to capture a very vibrant sunrise at about 5AM. There was something about the landscape on Hatteras Island which made you feel like you were on a deserted island.

Desolation Wilderness, Lake Echo to Eagle Fa

Desolation Wilderness, Lake Echo to Eagle Falls, two days, about 20 miles

Made in, I believe, Downers Grove Illinois.

I pulled into this parking lot to make a photo of something else and was immediately drawn to that fabulous white wall and the blue sky.

Not very interesting I guess, but I like the transition from the ridiculously green floor to the decaying wall.

On a tour of the US-Mexico border, immigration rights advocates Katy Brandes and Eric Wright pause to take in the desert landscape outside Ocotillo, California.

I love this stretch of road on US 287 between Laramie and Casper, WY. Wide open spaces, blue skies, and strong winds today (around 60 mph).

Some resolution loss/distortion as this was taken through the windshield.

Desolation Wilderness, Lake Echo to Eagle Fa

Desolation Wilderness, Lake Echo to Eagle Falls, two days, about 20 miles

It snowed for most of the day today.

The valley of desolation, on the way up to the Boiling Lake. I am one of the only people I know who likes the smell of sulphur, so I enjoyed this part of the hike. I also enjoyed it because it was relatively flat, and I had a chance to catch my breath.
