The only thing missing from the Cowgate, Kirkintilloch, is the tumbleweed rolling down it. I'd hate to be a shop owner relying on footfall.

« Oh desolate tree,
Reaching out with your
Claw-like branches,
Empty and barren.
Waiting for summer to
Cloak you with shimmering beauty
And golden colours of nature.
So sad and dull, yet
Reaching out in desperation.
Cold and lifeless,
Tormenting my thoughts
With your solitude. ...»

This is the start of my portrait work for my 'This Desolate Land,' series (changed the title again). The series looks at the land and how it portrays the emotion of the country in this period of recession. The N11 road is used as a means of finding my locations.

Despite the fashion, the fame, the trust funds, the beauty and the wonder, it is possible to find quiet, simplicity and desolation in The Hamptons.
The Hamptons, NY
August 2013
Photos are not justified. They don't describe the desolation and derelict feeling of the ghost town, but here's a taste.
We may think we own land, can buy / sell / profit from earth and we fight over our property boundaries....but we are after all only human - Mother nature cannot be reckoned with and we need to be made aware of this.
These are a sample of the sights I worked in, on behalf of Christchurch - they don't show the feeling you have standing on a street when the power goes on and coffee machines start steaming by themselves with no one around. Office lights turn on with air conditioning pumps whirring on a dusty cold day, but with no bustling city life and in silence. Tables are dressed, chairs are standing and cafe's flash "We're Open" signs, but they have no frontage and it is all open anyway. Handbags are found occassionally hanging over seats where it seems people simply vanished.
It is only when you hear a lone cat meow or smell the potent stench of rotting fish that I realise there hasn't been anyone living here for a few weeks and they fled, not vanished.
It's too bizzare to word.
It is a wonder there weren't many mroe lives lost and for this we are thankful.
I am humbled by many things and can only be awestruck by others, but above all else, through the trial and tribulation I believe in the strength of the people of Christchurch. Kia Kaha is a fitting phrase, and will become reknown for this time in people's lives.
Many won't have seen for themselves the destruction actually caused, and by the time normality returns and city re-opens, the raw scenes of destruction and damage will be gone...
So, here is my series of photos that tell my story only. It is through my eyes and may vary from those who live there.
My story begins as a volunteer and ends up working for USAR (Urban Search And Rescue) in Latimer Square as part of a DOC partnership thing. My experience was...unwordable.
We need reminding of how human we are, what we know of as 'success', the influence of materialism and the priorities we need to reassess for ourselves.
What a way to remember about communication, love, support and how to rely, when we need to, on our neighbours and communities.
Kia Kaha and congratulations on the sourcing of strength and concern for your neighbours.
Although desolate to an outsider's first glance, the factory walls of Hackney Wick and Fish Island hide a unique community of artists and designers, studios and live/work spaces. Rocketing land values, partly fuelled by the Olympic Park, now mean that the makeshift, DIY occupation of the area is increasingly under threat.
