Found this picture amongst my old pictures from Svalbard, Spitsbergen.
Was astonished how intense it is.
Every week or two, a small group of us from my office in Redwood Shores get together to tackle a lunchtime photo challenge that we each set in turn. Within 15 miles and an approximately 30 minute shooting time, this weeks challenge was "desolation"

Perhaps it will become a bit more human if that tree ever grows.
On our Hawaiian holiday we stayed on the Island of Oahu but we did do a day trip over to The Big Island of Hawaii itself to see the Volcano National park. The weather was miserable ,foggy and wet but driving around the new roads recently re built after a major eruption in the 80’s was just wierd and made for quite a eerie day…. It was just total desolation. It was like driving on the moon.
Stakes provide grounding in case of lightning strikes.
