Not very interesting I guess, but I like the transition from the ridiculously green floor to the decaying wall.

I love this stretch of road on US 287 between Laramie and Casper, WY. Wide open spaces, blue skies, and strong winds today (around 60 mph).

Some resolution loss/distortion as this was taken through the windshield.

The valley of desolation, on the way up to the Boiling Lake. I am one of the only people I know who likes the smell of sulphur, so I enjoyed this part of the hike. I also enjoyed it because it was relatively flat, and I had a chance to catch my breath.

Borhanci hills, Cluj, Romania

East of Amman, you come across a very arid desert and a desolate road that leads to Irak. Along the road, there are a number of Umayyad "castles" that were built in the 7th & 8th century. A very impressive journey.

Qusayr Amra is on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its superb frescoes.

Spring 1997

Tucked away in the Eastern Oregon high desert lies one of the nation's newest ghost towns, the former Rajneesh Ranch.

Between 1981 and 1986 a small, desolate valley twelve miles from Antelope, Oregon was transformed into a thriving town of 3,000 residents, with a 4,500 foot paved airstrip, a 44 acre reservoir, an 88,000 square foot meeting hall, and a charismatic Indian guru who owned more than 90 Rolls Royce cars.

In 1991, the ranch and it's sordid past was purchased for $3.65 million by Dennis Washington, a Montana rancher and owner of the Anaconda Copper Mine. Since then, Mr. Washington has grazed several hundred head of cattle on the property while trying to give it to the State of Oregon, or anyone who can accept a charitable donation. While the State has considered turning the nearly new abandoned town into a labor camp for boys, this use appears unlikely due to local resistance. The Nature Conservancy, when offered the land, had to refuse due liabilities associated with the structures at the site, most of which were built without any regard to safety or building codes.

Deconstructing the image

In this picture, I use two objects to scale and to put into a comparison. Not the comparison made in time, but the comparison between past and present. To illustrate the idea:

The name “Desolation”

The definition of the word means: a state of complete emptiness or destruction, a great unhappiness or loneliness.

In context: The great disturbance of thoughts and emptiness when losing something irreplaceable and longing for its return to the eternity while death is slowly grasping on the main object’s feet.

The objects

•The main object: I chose the trees with grown leaves and exposing roots to show the length of life time of the main object, and its existence.

•The secondary object: I chose the pot as the same as the main object but without the plant to expressively provide substance to compare and add comparison to the image.

•The shadows: there are few set up shadows, I used to provide unity and emphasize the idea of existence and no longer existed.

The composition of object

•I used the triangular composition to help connecting the unity of the objects while strongly show the comparison between objects. The former glorious of the main subject (as the shadow appears to be bigger but blurred), the existences between the main object and secondary object (one which has been reduced in sight of the past and once has been reduced to nothingness), the iconic present of the secondary objects the significant relationship between the secondary object to the main objects and the main object’s shadow (demonstrated in the size of secondary object and its shadow is relatively bigger than the main object and its shadow).

•The parallel between main object and secondary object is used to show the comparison while adding the relationship of unbreakable bond and unreachable of the objects. Distanced by the space between the two.

The color theme

The color theme, I used original black and white color and strong contrasted theme, to increase the dramatic resolve of the picture. Together with the objects, the theme demonstrated the feeling of lost, grieve, missing and somewhat longingly to nothingness. I try to express the incomprehensible and expressible feeling of losing something irreplaceable, while also longing desperately for its return.

The background

The background theme, I used old wooden table as 2/3 of the background, noticing the unsymmetrical pattern of scratches, holds, and dirt. This is to expressively add the provision the sense of time ravaging. The other left of the background is dominantly black and some light pattern to demonstrate the length of field to the faraway and unknown place, and more or less into the void.
