Nowadays, we continually share data: a message via WhatsApp, a picture on Instagram, an update on Facebook or an e-mail through Gmail. With whom do we really share this data? And how can we make sure that our personal data stay strictly personal?

This exhibition addresses issues of online privacy and digital surveillance. Next to several historical examples of encrypting, ‘Design my Privacy’ also shows some surprising contemporary strategies by more than 35 young designers and artists to maintain control over our data.

With work by Roel Roscam Abbing, Zineb Benassarou & Jorick De Quaasteniet, Josh Begley, Dennis de Bel, Caitlin Berner & Jana Blom, Heath Bunting, F.A.T., Giada Fiorindi, Front 404, Roos Groothuizen, Arantxa Gonlag & Eva Maria Martinez Rey, Monika Grūzīte, Rafaël Henneberke, Jan Huijben, Daniel C. Surrey Hotel

20 East 76th Street,

New York City, NY 10021

The Surrey Hotel - Blends in to the neighborhood - 76th Street between Fifth Avenue and Madison.

–--------

The Surrey hotel was built pre-war in Beaux Arts architectural design. The Surrey opened in 1926 as a residence hotel, The Surrey was once home to the likes of JFK and Bette Davis.

In the 1950’s George Kaufman assumed leadership of the Kaufman Organization. Under his guidance, the Kaufman Organization acquired several key properties including the Columbia Pictures building, the McGraw Hill building and the Surrey Hotel.

In August, 2008 Denihan spent $65 million to buy out its majority partner in the 132-suite Surrey Hotel on New York's Upper East Side. The deal was financed by the Canadian bank CIBC.

DHG determined what sort of ambience the hotel should have, which was determined to be “Considered Moments.” That framework helped set the renovation program of the hotel, along with food and beverage and design.

Denihan wanted to add to the residential feel of the hotel. It enlisted Lauren Rottet, of Rottet Studio to employ works by significant artists to improve ambiance and cultural buzz. Rottet slected works by rising stars in the contemporary art world, as well as commissioning artisanry for “feature walls” and other areas of focus.

Rottet chose a Chuck Close wall-sized tapestry portrait of Kate Moss for the Surrey Hotel’s lobby. The Surrey Hotel was listed among the 15 hottest hotel lobbies in New York City by The Huffington Post.

After 12 months and a $60-plus million dollar investment, the privately held Denihan Hospitality Group reopened The Surrey Hotel on November 1, 2009. With the addition of 58 keys to the property, The Surrey now offers 190 guest rooms, including 30 one-bedroom suites, a new 1,150 square-foot Penthouse Suite and the 4,500 sq ft Presidential Suite.

Co-CEO Patrick Denihan commented in the Denihan press release, "DHG's reinvestment in The Surrey is a part of our continued drive for growth through reinvestment in our existing hotels.

Among the Surrey’s assets is its long term relationship with Daniel Boulud.

DHG expanded its relationship with Caf'e Boulud to include a new 1,200 square-foot lobby-level bar, Bar Pleiades, with seating for approximately 75 people as well as private dining options. The hotel has a private rooftop garden available to guests only.

Boulud set out on his own and opened his restaurant Daniel in leased space at the Surrey Hotel, in 1993. Boulud relocated the restaurant Daniel to a new home in 1998 - the lobby of the former Regent Mayfair Hotel which had once housed Le Cirque ( Daniel Boulud was the chef of Le Cirque's four-star kitchen for six years). At the Surrey the original Daniel was re-launched as the Café Boulud.

The Denihan Back Story

Denihan Hospitality Group has been owned and operated since 1962 by members of the Denihan family, who in the last 50 years have built the company from one hotel, the 129-suite Affinia Gardens, to a collection of highly-rated, highly profitable hotels in New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Miami.

The family‘s first venture in New York was an exclusive laundry and dry cleaning business, which opened in the early 1900s. The business was hugely successful, thanks in part to devoted celebrity customers who appreciated the outstanding personal service they received. The Denihan‘s client list reads like a who‘s who of New York: Marilyn Monroe, the Vanderbilt family, and Hattie Carnegie, among many others. It was known The Cleaners to the Stars.

In 1962, Benjamin 'Bud‘ Denihan Sr. entered into the lucrative world of New York City real estate. He built New York‘s first suite hotel, Affinia Gardens, on the East 64th Street site of his laundry and dry cleaning establishment.

By 2011, the company had grown to 13 properties with plans for expansion into additional markets, using proceeds from an equity partnership agreement with Pebblebrook Hotel Trust, which was announced in June 2011. Once the transaction closes, Pebblebrook will have a 49% equity investment in a six-hotel subset of Denihan properties in Manhattan.

A web design by InTechCenter.

Based on a Learner profile, we looked at learner experience strategies when faced with difficulties in language processing, visual-spatial- non-verbal processing, and maintaining attention.

The big take away for me (something I had never understood before) was that when someone is not paying attention (attention deficit) it is because their neurons are not firing fully to create enough feel good chemicals (dopamine, neuroepinephrine) and so they need to attend to something else to stimulate their brains. Executive function is controlled by the cerebral cortex, which is not fully developed until about 25 years of age (sometimes longer in males). This is considered a lot in K12 but not so much in university- but the average age of a university student is 18 but their executive functions are still maturing!

My wife brought this home in triumph the other day having discovered it in the supermarket. It’s nearly 70 years since Mondrian died yet his ideas still look fresh when translated into a commercial context like this. If the packaging net had been designed to place the glued flaps on the base instead of the side it would have looked even better but the economies of tessellation always come first.
