Since Ireland became a member of the United Nations on 14 December 1955, not a single day has passed without the presence of personnel from the Irish Defence Forces deployed somewhere around the world in the service of peace.
It is said that peacekeeping is not a soldier’s job, but that only soldiers can do it and soldiering for peace has many hazards, some fatal. 26 Irish soldiers were killed in the Congo from 1960 to 1963.
Trooper Edward Gaffney died on 13 September 1961.
On 13 September 1961 the United Nations launched Operation Morthor in an attempt to round up mercenaries in the province of Katanga which had unilaterally seceded from the Congo a few days after independence in July 1960 . In addition, the central government had issued arrest warrants for Moishe Tshombe, leader of Katanga, and several of his officials which the United Nations troops were authorised to execute. The Katanganese had been forewarned however and put up some resistance. Tshombe escaped to Northern Rhodesia and Conor Cruise O’Brien, the United Nations Secreteary General’s special representative in the Congo and an Irishman, caused a diplomatic storm by announcing that the Katanga secession was over. The United Nations had no mandate to end the secession. Trooper Edward Gaffney was killed in fighting in Elizabethville, the capital of Katanga.
The parade and church service shown were held on Sunday 14 September 2003 to dedicate a new plaque on the grave of Trooper Edward Gaffney. The plaque was provided by Post 3 in Wexford of the Irish United Nations Veterans Association.

The Everett Naval Station was my husbands first and only duty station while in the Navy. Now he is out of the Navy and a different carrier sits in port but it brings back so many good and bad memories of dropping him off and picking him up from work-ups and deployments. I'm so glad he joined and that we had this life experience. But I am even more glad that he is out now!

Mannheim’s Coleman Barracks is the site of some important work that directly helps Soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Without the work of hundreds of maintenance workers there, many of the Army’s aircraft would not be ready for use after long deployments. The Theater Aviation Sustainment Manager-Europe is handling the helicopter reset program, essentially taking aircraft that have redeployed from theater, finding any mechanical or structural problems, fixing them, and getting them back to their units.
