Family and friends were on hand as well as Governor Martin O'Malley for the deployment of 15 Soldiers from the Maryland Army National Guard's Detachment 1, Company A, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment from the Patuxent River Readiness Center in Lexington Park, Md., on Friday, June 17, 2011.

 

The unit is headed to Camp Shelby, Mississippi for training prior to deploying to Afghanistan for approximately one year in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where they will operate the Tactical Unmanned Aerial Systems.

 

After a seven-month deployment to the Western Pacific and US Central Command areas of responsibility, the John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group returned to homeport San Diego. The Stennis Strike group includes USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), USS Pinckney (DDG 91), USS Kidd (DDG 100), USS Dewey (DDG 105), USS Wayne Meyer (DDG 108), Destroyer Squadron 21 and Carrier Air Wing 9.

The approximately 150 Soldiers of the Utah National Guard's 624th Engineer Company, 204th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, depart Utah on the first leg of their 12-month deployment to Afghanistan June 13, from the Utah Air National Guard Base in Salt Lake City.

The mission of the 624th will be to perform vertical construction (the building of structures and buildings) in the U.S. Central Command area of operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

38 people participated in the remote surveys. This included crews with OEH/NPWS, ACT Parks and Conservation, NSW DPI, Local Government, Greening Australia and volunteers from the Canberra Bushwalkers Club. Approximately 70 hectares was surveyed and no additional hawkweed populations were observed.
