Three hoods stacked together. It is a little flimsy as the plastic is of cheap quality.

.....thought so - it's tipping it down, so much so that I had to crop out the brolly from the top of this shot!

A visiting student to the Monmouth Science Initiative programme tests out a item of physics kit. This 10m long thin black plastic bag absorbs infra red rays from the sun and the energy warms the air inside causing it to expand and reduce in density. Once the density of the air plus the bag is equal/less than the surrounding atmospheric air the bag becomes buoyant and rises.

The conditions are ideal, with plenty of solar radiation to heat the bag air but cool surrounding spring air. The solar radiation is slightly attenuated by contrail cirrus as the 'no fly' status due to volcano Eyjafjallajokull has been lifted this day. Contrail cirrus is serious visual pollution in the UK.

Oil over acrylic with glass beads and metal foil. A combination of traditional painting, paint dripping, and cake decorating techniques were used to create the textures in the piece. 36 × 36 × 1.5 inches, 2011 This one’s for the chemists! Density of states is an important concept in the quantum mechanics of molecules. If there are a lot of electrons and there are continuous “paths” of energy states to delocalize the electrons, useful electronic, magnetic, and optical properties (and chemistry!) will often result. A good bit of materials chemistry, organometallic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry involves tweaking electron densities and densities of states. This important set of properties is represented in the background of the painting. The grid pattern produced by dripping paint is reminiscent of both graph paper and quantized energy levels, and the movement in the colors alludes to the “movement” between levels in a transition. The jagged linear pattern of crossing zig zags is an artist’s abstraction of many of the molecular density of states plots found in the technical literature. Equations from density functional theory and the Hartree-Fock model act as both expository text and as linear contrasting textures in the background. Of course the stars of this little quantum story are the molecules – several very sexy catalysts and a nanoparticle. The depiction of the molecules works with the style of the background textures to convey both the structured passion and irreverent creative glee involved in the discovery, synthesis, and proof of these “holy grails” of chemistry.

During the density lab we discovered that warm water is less dense than cold water because it changes in size (expands) when it becomes warm. We also discovered that by adding salt to fresh water we were adding more weight making it more dense than freshwater.

Our displays are made with high density insulation and not the cheap white beadboard styrofoam. They measure approximately 6 feet by 22 inches so that they fit the standard table. They are all handcarved and crafted by Tim Stephenson of Village Display Bases. Each display is painted a minimum of 2 coats of paint and up to 6 coats for some. They come in 2 sections. Custom display are available on request. Most display are in stock but if not, please allow 4-6 weeks to create. Display is $275.00 plus shipping, discounts will apply to 2 or more displays. Houses not included.
