Often dying back before the first frost, bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) carpets the Pacific Northwest in lacy green layers, especially in sunny clearings and forest edges. A native species and ecological pioneer, bracken stabilizes soil, shades out invasive grasses, and provides cover for birds and small mammals.
For many Indigenous peoples of the region—including the Makah, Cowlitz, and others—bracken had practical and ceremonial uses. The rhizomes were dug, dried, and pounded into meal, often mixed with other starches. Fronds served as lining for pit ovens and berry-drying racks.
Still, the plant’s deep historical and ecological roots endure—ancient in lineage, fast to reclaim disturbed land, and unmistakable in its summer architecture.

Members of the genus Metridium, also known as plumose anemones, are sea anemones found mostly in the cooler waters of the northern Pacific and Atlantic oceans. They are characterized by their numerous threadlike tentacles extending from atop a smooth cylindrical column, and can vary from a few centimeters in height up to one meter or more. In larger specimens, the oral disk becomes densely curved and frilly.
