Dedicated in 1876 and the host of both the 1904 World’s Fair and 1904 Summer Olympics, Forest Park in St. Louis, Missouri, is one of the largest inner-city parks in the country. Surrounded by high-rises and urban dwellings, I am always amazed at the amount of wildlife that lives in this park. One of my favorite places is the wetlands in the Deer Lake Natural Area. Every time I visit, I’m almost guaranteed to find Green Herons, egrets, ducks, geese and a host of songbirds.
The morning I took these photographs the Green Herons were in abundance. I spent a couple of hours crouched behind some reeds and cattails watching these birds hunt for their breakfast and hop from tree limb to tree limb.

Dedicated on August 26, 1927, Buckingham Fountain, located at Columbus Drive and Congress Parkway in Chicago (IL), was designed with sculptures by Jacques Lambert. It was donated to the city by Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother, Clarence Buckingham.
The fountain itself represents Lake Michigan, while each sea horse symbolizes a state bordering the lake.
The statues were created by the French sculptor Marcel F. Loyau. The design of the fountain was based on the Bassin de Latome and modeled after Latona Fountain at Versailles.
The fountain runs from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. every day from mid-April to mid-October. During a water display that runs for 20 minutes every hour on the hour, the center jet shoots up vertically to 150 feet . At dusk, a light and music show coincides with the water display.
The fountain contains 1,500,000 gallons of water. During a display, more than 14,000 gallons per minute are pushed through the fountain's 193 jets, which since a 1994 renovation have been controlled by a computer.

The Rijksmuseum (Dutch pronunciation: [ËrÉi̯ksmyËzeËjÊm]; English: State Museum) is a Netherlands national museum dedicated to arts and history in Amsterdam. The museum is located at the Museum Square in the borough Amsterdam South, close to the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and the Concertgebouw.
The Rijksmuseum was founded in The Hague in 1800 and moved to Amsterdam in 1808, where it was first located in the Royal Palace and later in the Trippenhuis. The current main building was designed by Pierre Cuypers and first opened its doors in 1885. On 13 April 2013, after a ten-year renovation which cost ⬠375 million, the main building was reopened by Queen Beatrix. In 2013 and 2014, it was the most visited museum in the Netherlands with record numbers of 2.2 million and 2.45 million visitors.
The museum has on display 8,000 objects of art and history, from their total collection of 1 million objects from the years 1200â2000, among which are some masterpieces by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Johannes Vermeer. The museum also has a small Asian collection which is on display in the Asian pavilion.
Building
The building of the Rijksmuseum was designed by Pierre Cuypers and opened in 1885. It consists of two squares with an atrium in each centre. In the central axis is a tunnel with the entrances at ground level and the Gallery of Honour at the first floor. The building also contains a library. The fragment building, branded Philips wing, contains building fragments that show the history of architecture in the Netherlands. The Rijksmuseum is a rijksmonument (national heritage site) since 1970 and was listed in the Top 100 Dutch heritage sites in 1990. The Asian pavilion was designed by Cruz y Ortiz and opened in 2013.
History
21st century
The atrium after the renovation in 2013
In December 2003, the main building of the museum closed for a major renovation. During this renovation, about 400 objects from the collection were on display in the 'fragment building', including Rembrandt's The Night Watch and other 17th-century masterpieces.
The restoration and renovation of the Rijksmuseum are based on a design by Spanish architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz. Many of the old interior decorations were restored and the floors in the courtyards were removed. The renovation would have initially taken five years, but was delayed and eventually took almost ten years to complete. The renovation cost ⬠375 million.
The reconstruction of the building was completed on 16 July 2012. In March 2013 the museum's main pieces of art were moved back from the 'fragment building' (Philips Wing) to the main building. The Night Watch returned to the Night Watch Room, at the end of the Hall of Fame. On 13 April 2013, the main building was reopened by Queen Beatrix. On 1 November 2014 the Philips Wing reopened with the exhibition Modern Times: Photography in the 20th Century.
According to Muriel Huisman, Project Architect for the Rijksmuseum's renovation, "Cruz y Ortiz always like to look for a synergy between old and new, and we try not to explain things with our architecture.â With the Rijks, âthereâs no cut between old and new; weâve tried to merge it. We did this by looking for materials that were true to the original building, resulting in a kind of silent architecture."

The collection of the Rijksmuseum consists of 1 million objects and is dedicated to arts, crafts, and history from the years 1200 to 2000. Around 8000 objects are currently on display in the museum.
The collection contains more than 2,000 paintings from the Dutch Golden Age by notable painters such as Jacob Isaakszoon van Ruisdael, Frans Hals, Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen, Rembrandt, and Rembrandt's pupils.
The museum also has a small Asian collection which is on display in the Asian pavilion.
It also displays the stern of HMS Royal Charles which was captured in the Raid on the Medway, and the Hartog plate.
In 2012 the museum took the unusual step of making some 125,000 high-resolution images available for download via its Rijksstudio webplatform, with plans to add another 40,000 images per year until the entire collection of one million works is available, according to Taco Dibbits, director of collections.

Sinclair College Opens World’s First Dedicated UAS Indoor Flying Pavilion
Dayton, OH – Sinclair College, home to the National UAS Training and Certification Center, is now home to the world’s first permanent, custom-built unmanned aerial systems (UAS) indoor flying facility following a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 17, coinciding with the 112th anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ first powered flight.
The UAS Indoor Flying Pavilion is the first facility in the world to be constructed and dedicated solely for UAS testing and flight operations. Covering 3,200 sq.ft. and featuring an interior ceiling height of 40 ft., the Pavilion includes a mezzanine flying deck to facilitate testing and instruction, and was constructed to allow GPS signal transmissions to support aircraft navigation.
“The new UAS Indoor Flying Pavilion marks another milestone in aviation and another important step for Sinclair in bringing the most advanced UAS capabilities to the Dayton region,” said Dr. Steve Johnson, President and CEO of Sinclair College. “Through the remarkable partnerships we’ve established, Sinclair is leading the way in what’s being called by industry leaders as the greatest aviation breakthrough since the first manned flight.”
As part of the National UAS Training and Certification Center, the new Pavilion provides space to test out vehicles, sensors and components in a controlled environment, further expanding research and development capabilities. Paired with the Center’s advanced manufacturing and rapid prototyping capabilities, sensor lab, and wind tunnel, the Pavilion will give students the opportunity to take a UAS project from the design phase through production and into flight tests in one location.
Further features of the Pavilion include:
• Fiber-optic network connection to the UAS simulation lab
• Customizable space supporting sense and avoid and other airspace integration challenges
• Controlled environment for high-risk and destructive testing
• Support for simulated cybersecurity attacks and mitigation strategies
Sinclair College is recognized as a national leader in UAS, supported by world-class partnerships, cutting-edge technology, and custom training programs designed to drive the expansion of the UAS industry. Sinclair’s curriculum focuses on real-world applications of emerging UAS and sensor technologies through classroom and online instruction, simulation and hands-on vehicle operations.
Nov.4, 2018: The Karnak Temple Complex, commonly known as Karnak, comprises a vast mix of temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings near Luxor, in Egypt.
A cult temple dedicated to Amun, Mut and Khonsu. The largest religious building complex ever constructed. The temple of Karnak was known as Ipet-isu—or “most select of places”—by the ancient Egyptians. It is a city of temples built over 2,000 years and dedicated to the Theban triad of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. This derelict place is still capable of overshadowing many wonders of the modern world and in its day must have been awe-inspiring.
For the largely uneducated ancient Egyptian population, this could only have been the place of the gods. It is the largest religious building ever made, covering about 200 acres (1.5 km by 0.8 km), and was a place of pilgrimage for nearly 2,000 years. The area of the sacred enclosure of Amun alone is sixty-one acres and could hold ten average European cathedrals. The great temple at the heart of Karnak is so big that St Peter’s, Milan, and Notre Dame Cathedrals would fit within its walls.
The Hypostyle hall, at 54,000 square feet (16,459 meters) and featuring 134 columns, is still the largest room of any religious building in the world. In addition to the main sanctuary there are several smaller temples and a vast sacred lake – 423 feet by 252 feet (129 by 77 meters). The sacred barges of the Theban Triad once floated on the lake during the annual Opet festival. The lake was surrounded by storerooms and living quarters for the priests, along with an aviary for aquatic birds.

The Egyptians believed that towards the end of annual agricultural cycle the gods and the earth became exhausted and required a fresh input of energy from the chaotic energy of the cosmos.
To accomplish this magical regeneration the Opet festival was held yearly at Karnak and Luxor. It lasted for twenty-seven days and was also a celebration of the link between pharaoh and the god Amun. The procession began at Karnak and ended at Luxor Temple, one and a half miles (2.4 kilometres) to the south.
The statue of the god Amun was bathed with holy water, dressed in fine linen, and adorned in gold and silver jewellery. The priests then placed the god in a shrine and onto the ceremonial barque supported by poles for carrying. Pharaoh emerged from the temple, his priests carrying the barque on their shoulders, and together they moved into the crowded streets. A troop of Nubian soldiers serving as guards beat their drums, and musicians accompanied the priests in song as incense filled the air.
At Luxor, Pharaoh and his priests entered the temple and ceremonies were performed to regenerate Amun, recreate the cosmos and transfer Amun’s power to Pharaoh. When he finally emerged from the temple sanctuary, the vast crowds cheered him and celebrated the guaranteed fertility of the earth and the expectation of abundant harvests.
During the festival the people were given over 11000 loaves of bread and more than 385 jars of beer, and some were allowed into the temple to ask questions of the god. The priests spoke the answers through a concealed window high up in the wall, or from inside hollow statues.
Caritas Venezuela volunteer Dr. Albina Rosas is dedicated to helping get children the nutritional and medical support they need. Trained in sports medicine she routinely does nutrition monitoring for Caritas Venezuela. The medical system has been decimated and basic drugs are hard to find. Most expectant mothers do not have access to prenatal vitamins an Folic Acid supplements. Illnesses once thought eradicated in Venezuela such as Tuberculosis and Malaria are now on the rise The current minimum monthly salary averages to about $1.50 and covers only 2 percent of the minimum nutritional basket. As of March 2018, it would require 73 monthly salaries solely to cover the cost of feeding a family. Families cope by selling off goods, cutting back on meals and the quantity of food served at each meal. Routine growth monitoring sessions conducted by Caritas has shown that 70 percent of children under 5 show signs of some form of nutrition with 8 percent from severe malnutrition. Galloping inflation has pushed 92 percent of the population into poverty. The current minimum monthly salary averages to about $1.50 and covers only 2 percent of the minimum nutritional basket.
