...MuertoFest, San Antonio

I saw a similar piece for $400 and loved it...but couldn't afford it. What to do but make one myself!

The Penn State York community celebrated the Day of the Dead on Oct. 30 and those in attendance decorated sugar skulls. Skulls were decorated with colorful paint, feathers, plastic jewels, and a variety of other items.

I'LL BE LIVE PAINTING THIS SUN @ this DAY OF THE DEAD community event in Silverlake.

The Day of the Dead festival goes back to Aztec times, possibly as far as 3,000 years ago.

Here, the dead are buried for one year, then dug up, then stored in those small metal coffins after their bones are washed.

This "Day of the Dead" figure came from Mexico, and was carved out of a dried gourd. I hung it on my wall and made a little shrine for it, including traditional Day of the Dead offerings of cigars and liquor to show respect for the spirits.

I have no idea what it tasted like; not mine, I just photographed it. :)

Grave of an angelito. There are toys and little chairs.

Location: Hollywood Forever Cemetery

A and I have spent a good portion of the day coloring in the skull I drew earlier...of course, she's colored at least 9 to my 1. :-)

I'm happy to share the black and white version with you if you want to color your own...just email me at risetomusic@gmail.com and I'll send a pdf file your way. :-)

memorialized some of the people we've lost in the past while.

San Miguel de Allende, Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). A woman with dress and Catrina makeup seen in Jardine Square.

Catrina is one of the symbols of the Day of the Dead - a skeleton in fancy dress / clothes. We saw both adults and children made up as Catrinas for the festivities. Marigolds were also an important part of the costume as they represent the symbol of death. Double exposure.

A WORLD OF COLOR Sophomore Kiera Boehle focuses on the Day of the Dead altar that she was setting up as a part of Art Society volunteer work in the main hall on Thursday, October 24th. The altar displayed photographs, trinkets, flowers and other decorations honoring people that have died. “We made it all nice,” Boehle said. “That’s one of the reasons I like Art Society, it contributes to the art community, and allows you to experience the world even when you’re in such a small space like a high school.”
