went downtown with my dad today! don't know which to make my 365...surprising, i know.

i think i'll go with this one!

I got a wonderful photography album as a present from a friend. The cover is very striking. It's the portrait of a miner.

Just playing with my new toys... water balls.

These little globes of fun are polymer water beads for floral arrangements. They begin life as hard crystals the size of a BB, and with water, grow to about the size of a marble in a few hours. They feel like tiny silicone balls once fully saturated and the clear ones are invisible when immersed in water... oh, and they bounce. =)

I've been listening to a lot of 70's music recently and this shot made me think of Styx. This could totally have been a 1978 album cover. ;)

All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

~ Roy Batty, Bladerunner

(on black)

It's been raining cats and dogs in Palo Alto. I went to a sushi restaurant for a dinner with my son and by the end of it I found out that I'd lost my wallet. Luckily I had my trusty Android phone and after a brief call the wallet was found back home. The guys at the sushi bar were kind enough to let us go retaining my son as a guarantee under the condition that I come back before the closing time and pay. Sure enough I got back and left a handsome tip. By then the streets were empty and thoroughly wet, the rain was heavy and I still didn't have a picture of the day. So I did what everyone does - I took The Bicycle Shot, and made it to look like The Bokeh Shot, so you get two for one today.

On the way back to my car I saw an old lady on the crutches standing in the middle of a sidewalk over a Louis Vutton leather bag dropped in a pool of water. Apparently she'd been standing like that for a while - her hat, a wide-brimmed black velvety hat with a fancy pin - was soaked, and she was standing in a quite awkward pose. She could not bend down to pick up the bag because she'd have to let at least one of her crutches go. She was crying, I think, although it was hard to tell with all the rain. Her hand on a crutch was sparkling with what appeared to be raindrops until I noticed that those drops were connected by a delicate, almost lacy-looking golden chain and were, in fact, diamonds.

She was behaving like a real lady - thanking me airly for the picked bag, even after I put it on her shoulder (which was not quite as simple as it sounds). She didn't need any further help, thank you much, luv. I stood for a while and watched her stumbling into the rain until she slowly turned around the corner and was gone.

Palo Alto, California is a weird place. Beggars have $.5M homes, wealthy people look like bums and lonely old ladies wear diamonds in the rain on a Sunday night.

Day 52/365

I'm afraid I've returned to my bubble kingdom once again for today's 365 shot!

The colours here are all natural! I let sunlight shine onto the drip tray containing the bubbles, which seemed to do a good job of toning them!

For the record, today I see a rather elegant lady wearing a long evening gown, and a rather flamboyant coat that is flapping around her outstratched arms! Anyone else? :)

The Hereios are hiding under furniture today.

A slightly lazy shot from me -busy weekend.

The idiot dog likes to lie under the kitchen table. i think he finds it more peaceful. he was not impressed with me crawling under there to take pics of him!

and it meets the theme for the 365 week 8 (a day early I know!): a rats eye view. although i suspect the dog would look slightly different if a rat were there. he'd have his eyes shut and his paws over his head, hoping it was going to go away.

Cant believe its day 52 already- where has the time gone? Some old marbles I found in a jar- I put them on a small hand mirror in the sun.

Its one for viewing on black I think.

I have been so poor at commenting of late. It just takes a few days away and a backlog of looking at and processing my images and I've found myself really struggling. Work has been chaotic and as I've started attaching long, rambling and irrelevant tales to each image it is taking a little time to catch up. I say irrelevant, but in the vast majority of cases I have managed to conjure up at least a vague attempt to link either the image or the events of the day to the story told. To see just how tenuous connection this connection can be, read on.

I took this shot before work in the woods next to the railway line. I figured there may be some nice light coming through the trees. But I wasn't that fussed about the location I'd picked so I quickly packed up. I had a trip planned at lunchtime so I doubted I'd use them anyway. However, I had to revert to my morning shoot when that lunchtime trip went wrong. (If you are interested I got lost, then set up my tripod on a riverbank next to a field and got sprayed with slurry by a farmer). Anyway, the point is I was next to the railway line that goes between Newcastle and Carlisle. And I caught that train once. And this happened.

On this particular journey, there was a comic conductor. The first stop after setting off was the Metro Centre shopping complex. In a broad Geordie accent he announced over the public address system 'The next station stop is the Metro Centre, change here for Woolworths, Marks & Spencer, Superdrug and Toys R Us'. Well, I chuckled.

Our next port of call (or station of call, we weren't sailing), was Hexham. 'Ladies and Gentlemen, we are now approaching Hexham. For the benefit of passengers leaving the train at Hexham, byeeeeeeeeee!' The jokes continued at the next stop, a very small village in the middle of nowhere. 'We're about to arrive at Bardon Mill. For the benefit of passengers leaving the train at this station.... Why?'

At this point, as I laughed at each announcement I noticed that while half of the passengers were laughing too, the other half had their heads in their hands, were rolling their eyes or even rocking back and forward in their seats. Clearly, this was a routine he did on the same route every day. Still, I was on for that journey only and it entertained me. He finished as we approached Carlisle by announcing 'Ladies and Gentlemen, we are approaching the last station stop, Carlisle. If you would care to glance at your watches, you will note that we are approximately five minutes early. On behalf of Northern Rail I would like to express my sincere apologies for this slight convenience.'

Just a note on the title. I remembered the story when Giovanni mentioned touching his plane down in Edmonton 5 minutes early. And the processing on this shot (which was rubbish to begin with) was done following a tutorial drawn up by Ralph . Thank you fellas!

The majority of the leaves have turned brown and fallen off, however there is still a few with color, which makes for an interesting scene.

Christmas Eve and my bedroom's all toasty warm creating condensation on the window. I went a walk up Grubbit Law today, a hill near my parents. Bit dark and grey so didn't choose one of those photos for today's shot.

They are starting to come to life!! The geraniums live!!

Went outside my comfort zone and asked some skaters if I could take some photos while they played. I also stretched myself with the editing and played with the sliders again today.

I’m letting go

Of the life I planned for me

And my dreams

Losing control

Of my destiny

Feels like I’m falling and that’s what it’s like to believe

So I’m letting go

Today I went for a walk in our "Little Forest"

My shoes are too small and now my feet hurt.

The lens hood for my camera broke.

I think it was worth it.

For We're Here - Hiding under the furniture

Argh! I was so focused on getting the underdone potato reference right that I entirely forgot about the “under the furniture” part of the challenge! So here’s a half-baked attempt at combining the two themes, and I’ll post the one I fussed over in comments. Stoopit crab!

FURTHERMORE, I went to the store and bought ONE potato, along with some other groceries, got home, started setting up the shot, and couldn’t find the potato anywhere. It must have rolled off the counter when I started scanning my items. Sorry, but there was no way I was going back to that busy parking lot. So this fragment isn’t even a fragment of a real underdone potato. It’s a fragment of yesterday’s turnip! Comedy of errors. Or tubers. Or something.

And I haven't even mentioned what a stretch it is to use "underdone potato" for my "U" today. What's next for tomorrow's "V"? "Vintage potato"?
