Dave, a bioinformatician at the University of Cambridge, is one of the friendliest people that i ever met. He has a great sense of humor, owns a large collection of souvenirs from his voyages, and makes a perfect English tea.

Tui (male) native to New Zealand.

Meet Dave (The Megalomaniac). He was the boss of our tree in 2010. An alfa male wannabe (the real alfa males don't bother to chase everyone away :-) He frantically chased almost every other bird from the tree all winter long (a hopeless endless task). And sung non-stop.

He never slept at our place but would arrive soon after sunrise (except on wet days when he would sleep in and arrive late) and leave just after sundown. He only worked at ours.

In 2011 Bob was the tree King... and Dave would visit.

2012…2013…no sign of Dave.

I like to think of him out there chasing off invaders from another tree somewhere.

This oak tree adds plenty of character to bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River between Hastings MN and Prescott WI. A Hastings photographer has said that this is one of his favorite trees to photograph, so I just refer to it as his tree.

A hIghly talented and creative individual who just can't get the hang of ice creams

For details on this image and these edits, check out the straight out of camera shot - www.flickr.com/photos/samuelrussell/8196673703/in/photost...

For the 3rd edit I wanted to try something in black and white so for this one I changed the treatment from 'Color' to 'Black & White' in Lightroom and once again tweaked things to my liking. Bumped the exposure 2/3rds of a stop and added some contrast. Brought down the highlights and whites while bringing up the shadows a bit. Added some clarity (+40) to give the image some grit/definition. A number of local adjustments were made on the eyes and some on the jacket as well. I also used a couple graduated filters to darken the sides and bottom of the image. Lastly, added some sharpening, lens correction and a touch of vignetting.

This is a rarity to see Dave in the spotlight. Of the 2 times I have gotten to photograph him, this was a brief moment where he was in the spotlight.
