I ran into Dave and Lynette Bower on the road to Mud Lake a couple of days ago. Dave posted a photo of six geese today and I'll bet these are the same birds in my photo taken just a few minutes later. Small world.
Don't know if we will get anything from Dave's Prickly Pear this year or not.. I noticed that he didn't put the pot back in the garage this last winter and this is not a native plant for this area..

DAVE
"I was working as a Marine Engineer about 40 years ago in Berlin. My friend owned an old Leica Camera and I was quite envious so I saved up and bought my own. I only shot about 5 rolls of film and it's been in storage ever since. I still have the original box and manual so it's probably worth quite a bit now. Perhaps you could help me get it valued."
I've noticed Dave a few times around Wellington walking up and down Cuba Street. I'd approached him before in the hope of taking his portrait but he didn't seem keen on talking. Although I was disappointed I respected his privacy and let him go on his way.
Today as I was waiting for my bus I spotted Dave on the other side of the street. As my bus approached I made the bold move of letting it pass and trying again to see if he would let me photograph him. I crossed over and walked along side him wishing him a Merry Christmas. Dave noticed my Nikon and we instantly struck up a conversation about camera gear and photography.
As we talked I noticed that Dave was a little hard of hearing and perhaps the last time we tried to engage he just didn't hear me. I'm glad I tried again because as we got talking he was really friendly and opened up to me about his life in Berlin. Our brief conversation was a valuable reminder not to judge someone that you've only just met as people can be easily misunderstood.
I advised Dave that I although I wasn't the best person to place a value on his Leica they can be quite expensive and urged him to ensure he had it valued before he considered selling it.

The title is a reference to a bit of silliness from a Canadian comedy troupe called The Kids in the Hall (from the early 80's)

This is Dave. His rank onboard my ship is AB or Able Bodied Seaman. AB for short or deckahnd. I have know Dave since 1987 when we actually shared a cabin on an old coastal ship named the Irving Ours Polaire. At that time Dave was on one of his first ships I was then an AB myself waiting for my a promotion to 3rd Officer. Dave is my most trusted deckhand. The man knows his seamanship. This world is a small and large all at once. Crews come and go always changing. Sometimes you don't see somebody like Dave for more than 20 years then you see him everyday.
Today is actually Dave's birthday, so here is my tribute and some photos from Saturday when he came round. You can see Dave with the photobook we gave him and also the little lemon curd cakes I baked!! I called the book "10 Years of Southsea Dave" (his Flickr name, and it's a collection of all the days out and special occasions we have shared with him since we met in the autumn of 2011!

A prolific and adaptable species, the eastern gray squirrel has been introduced to, and thrives in, several regions of the western United States. The gray squirrel is an invasive species in Britain; it has spread across the country and has largely displaced the native red squirrel.
