dave started swimming in the sea all year round in the 1950s. he is one of the most recognisable faces in the sea section of the brighton swimming club, where he has been a member for 30 years. dave takes great interest in local history, particularly when it comes to sea swimming, he has also experienced a lot of it himself including seeing sherman tanks lined up in preston park in the weeks leading up to d-day.

Dave was a good friend of mine who served in the pacific theater of World War II on Guadalcanal . I meet him and his wife at church and asked them if I could interview him about his life and time in the service. It was an honor to have known him and to have had the opportunity to have interviewed him . He passed away on July 3rd, 2019.

The interview is on YouTube. watch it here: youtu.be/NyFBh_ABFI8

Thank a veteran this veterans day.

Dave helped write his own obituary: David Stanton Heath, 97, resident of Ventura, CA for over 30 years, and resident of Cedar Park, Texas for 10 months passed away on July 3, 2019, at home in Cedar Park, Texas surrounded by his wife of 6 years, Louise A. Perry-Heath, his step-daughter, Diana Richwine, and his step-son-in-law, Gary Richwine.David was born in Toppenish, Washington to Claude Stanton Heath and Florence Dana Farrington-Heath on November 20, 1921. He attended Nashua High School and went on to join the United States Marine Corp in 1940, where he hoped to be an aviation mechanic. His boot camp was 9 weeks in San Diego, CA. They kept him there an extra month working in the mess hall, as he did such a good job. He spent time in Camp Elliott tent area doing guard duty while they built the barracks and paved the streets. They apparently didn’t have much to protect, since their guns had no ammunition and flashlights had no batteries. He then went onto Camp Roberts for rifle training. They then split into 3 units; he was in C Company – 1st Battalion and shipped out to the Solomon Islands August 7, 1942. He spent a month on Tulagi, in the Solomon Islands, and then 5 months and 10 days in the Battle of Guadalcanal, at which there were 120 soldiers down with Malaria, but Colonel Arthur gave one more fight with the Japanese before they were finally relieved with fresh troops. David remembers being so exhausted, that when he climbed the rope ladder to the ship, he only made it to 6 rungs from the top, and he had to lock his arms between the rope and the ship, and it took 6 sailors to pull him up. He went on to New Zealand where he almost died from jaundice and had his appendix removed. David left the Marines as a Sergeant. His Marine bag came here when he moved to Cedar Park, never have been opened since he returned from the war. It was finally opened in December of 2018, and we are hoping to donate the contents to the World War II Museum in New Orleans, LA.David loved kites, model airplanes, coin collecting and flying. His proudest moments were becoming a Marine, as well as working on the blueprint for the L-1011 (he drew the fix for the return air grille, which was then added to the blueprint). He also worked on the cockpit of the L-1011. His favorite memories, are marrying his first girlfriend, Virginia Pearl, making supervisor on the flight line for the interiors of the L-1011, getting flying lessons on a 4 seater Cessna (which he piloted with his wife Ginger and daughter Diane in the back seats), being promoted to Platoon Sergeant in the Marine, and seeing Charles Lindberg flying over his home as a kid. Two of his recent favorite things were going on the inaugural Soaring Valor flight with the Gary Sinise Foundation to the World War II Museum in New Orleans, where he had breakfast with Mr. Sinise, and his time spent with him was the trip of a Lifetime. He also traveled to Washington, DC with the Inland Empire Honor Flight – and was so excited to be able to see all the history/monuments there. His favorite flower is the Gladiola, which we have growing out in front of our home, so he has had an endless supply of them in his room. His favorite foods are the chicken and dumplings Louise made him, homemade spaghetti and meatballs that Diana made him (with no garlic!), Coconut Shrimp from Outback Restaurant, and beans. He loved his beans! He loved his home state of Montana, living in Nashua and having property in Jordan. He also lived in Arizona for 6 years. David is thankful for meeting Louise at the pool that day 20 year ago, and thankful for the wonderful care she has given him all these years. He loves that she was a great cook, housekeeper, and such a smart lady!David would like everyone to know that the best thing in his life was being a Marine and serving his country. Semper Fi!

Dave was just west of Wabash on the north side of Madison. He's not technically homeless, but he sits out here to make a little money because he's disabled. He has knee problems. "I can walk if I need to, but I need to keep weight off of it. One thing he can do is push a snowblower. It takes a little weight off his knee and it makes him a little money. He was hoping the impending snow would be good for him. Then he changed subjects and said, "I'm just tired of people and society in general". The current climate in society today was making him upset.

I've not seen my mate Dave much this year, but we managed to file the requisite paperwork and head down to the Chiverton for a couple this evening while the wives had a catch up.

Good night, dead chilled and great to grab some downtime for a change whilst trying to put the world to rights.

One happy development in my life over the past six months has been my friendship with Dave. We've known each other since we were thirteen, but after we left school we would meet only once or twice each year. In 2011, however, scarcely a weekend has passed that hasn't seen us drinking until the sun comes up the next morning. In years to come I'll still be telling stories of our exploits in these recent months.

It was on one such morning, lying on the floor of my living room, that I took this photograph.

My good Flickr friend Dave (Buffdawgus) and I were covering the Nevada City Soapbox Derby 2014 located in Nevada City, California last weekend. As usual, this event was a good photo opportunity for the both of us as we wandered around the event. Dave just happen to get in the way of my camera on this particular shot. I got to admit that Dave is a technically better photo shooter than i am but he's always been free with his technical knowledge and he's a barrel of laughs to be around. One thing that David has taught me, is that it's easy to get a "good picture", but "difficult" to get a great one.

As digital capture slowly replaces film for still photography, Dave Hill stands as a dual figure on either end in the death of a medium. A roll of film is strapped into the electric chair, and Dave Hill is both the man at the switch, and the governor calling in a last minute pardon. By defining a look that is purely digital, Dave Hill furthers the digital movement, but also allows film and a “film look” to retain an important place in photography. So for ushering us into a new age, Dave Hill is our newest artist of the week. Find out more at www.creativetempest.com

Meet Dave! Dave was winding me up buzzing around, so I thought rather than splat him, I would shoot him instead, no sooner had I took the shot he flew away.

I was sitting on a campus retaining wall, enjoying the arrival of spring while sipping my coffee. Anticipating photographing a stranger, I had scoped out a nearby portrait location and had even taken a selfie to double-check settings. As people came and went, I was hesitant and simply couldn’t “pull the trigger” to stop someone and introduce myself. That was until this man came by and I suddenly found the courage to jump to my feet and stop him. He received my request with a smile, saying “Well, I’m a stranger alright. Where do you want to do it?” Meet Dave.

I indicated the covered bicycle shelter in front of a university building which was just a few steps away and as we walked over, I pulled out my contact card and told him about the Human Family project. He was intrigued and more than happy to participate. He said he felt flattered to have been asked.

Taking the photos was fairly straightforward since I had already checked my camera settings. At one point I asked if he could bend his knees a bit – he was pretty tall and I wanted him placed well with regard to the light at the end of the bike shelter.

Most of our time together was spent chatting since Dave proved a very friendly (and interesting) subject. He is 60 and told me he was born in Ottawa (the nation’s capital) but has “pretty much lived all over.” “I’ve moved at least 20 times” he said. When I asked what occasioned all the moves he said his father had been a church minister and ministers are moved from community to community on a frequent basis. “I’ve lived in many towns and cities – mostly in Ontario.”

Dave works as a teacher of English as a second language. He explained that since Canada attracts so many immigrants, he has had no trouble finding a variety of teaching jobs but he particularly enjoyed the six years he spent teaching English in Istanbul. In addition to the six years spent in Istanbul he has toured dozens of countries and confessed to having “itchy feet,” always interested in the next place to discover. During his time in Turkey he met and married his wife who moved back to Canada with him. Their daughter is now attending university and he said as soon as she graduates and is independent, he and his wife look forward to continue their travels. They would like to live in South America – a continent he has not explored.

Some people who grow up moving frequently describe it as a handicap, resulting in an inability to invest in relationships because they will always be broken. Not Dave. It seems his mobile youth resulted in a person who loves travel and exploring new places and it was clear from our chat that his friendly personality makes it easy for him to meet people.

We covered a number of topics during the 15 minutes we spent together, including comparing notes on some of the differences between Canada and our southern neighbor, the U.S. which is going through such social and political turmoil these days.

When I asked Dave what advice he would give his younger self he said “Get into teaching sooner.” He clearly loves his work and I was surprised to learn that he didn’t go to university until he was 44. He did a variety of jobs prior to that but nothing that appeals the way teaching does. Dave’s message for the project was “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

Just before we parted I realized I had not taken a photo of him without his sunglasses so I asked for one more photo. He was good-natured in agreeing and said with a wink “I’m glad you thought of that. Some people say my eyes are my best feature.” We laughed and I took the photo.

It was clear that we had both enjoyed the unexpected encounter and we wished each other well. Dave said “I can’t wait to tell my wife – now I know what it feels like to be a rock star!”

Thanks Dave, for participating in The Human Family project on Flickr. You are my 831st submission to the project.

This has to be one of my favorite quotes EVER!

Dave Witty is the one who finally convinced me to hire out. Here he is one day saying hello, while working a coal drag back to Benning with TC Hiers.

Dave is living out of bags tied to his bicycle in a park bench shelter in Pinecraft Park in Sarasota. I surprised him when I asked his permission to sit down on one of the nearby benches. As far as outdoor living arrangements, Dave has a primo spot, under a shelter and close to park restrooms. He does have to bicycle quite a way to get his breakfast, which is offered at about 6:00 A.M. by a church or civic organization catering to the needs of the homeless indigent.

During the next few minutes, I learned that he moved to Florida from Lancaster, Pennsylvania to be close to his parents, who both passed away a few years before. He told me he took photographs professionally at one time, and happily talked about some cameras he had used in his past. He told me, “I am going to retire in a couple of years, then I think I will take up photography again.”

He asked what I was photographing that day. I went out that morning to shoot birds and told him that, then I went on to list landscapes, cityscapes, and people as areas of interest for me. After a few minutes of conversation, I asked if I could photograph him. His response surprised me; “what would you do with the photos”, he asked. I told him that I would post his photo on line and perhaps, enter his image into a photo contest. He seemed incredulous, so I showed him a few street portraits I had done. In the end, he agreed and held still for a few seconds.

This photo captured Dave’s loneliness and quite a measure of his sadness as well. Dave was genuinely surprised and appreciative of the few dollars I gave him when we parted.

See the Human Family Group for more encounters and photos with former strangers at www.flickr.com/groups/thehumanfamily/pool/ - it is well worth your visit!
