Jpeg SOOC, cropped and tweaked a little in DxO PhotoLab 6.

Spotted in the Annex.

The River Ilissos, circa 1910. (Scanned in high-res. from old postcard, colour and resolution adjusted.)

The photo is taken from the Stadium, and shows the newly constructed (1873) Stadion Bridge, paid for by Zappas. (For the previous 100 years, there had been no bridge connecting the Stadium with Athens.)

The tree-lined avenue, angled at 120 degrees from the River, is Irodou Attikou -- leading up to Kifissias Avenue (now Leoforos Vasilissis Sofias) and then into Kolonaki Square.

Note also the "Rotunda", constructed in 1896 and demolished in 1915. It housed a panorama of the 1870 Siege of Paris -- a form of popular entertainment soon overshadowed by the emergence of cinema (Llewellyn Smith (2004): 'Athens, a cultural and literary history'; p. 164). This panorama had previously been exhibited in New York (1882), Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles (1887) and then San Francisco. For some interesting info and pictures of the Los Angeles Rotunda and exhibition, see www.panoramaonview.org/history

The Theresianum called state facility with buildings dating back several centuries in Vienna, 4th district, Favoritenstrasse 15, serves as the seat of the public high school of the Foundation Theresianische Academy, as the building for short Theresianum, and the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. Both institutions have a tradition spanning centuries. Since 2011, the Foundation also offers a kindergarten and an elementary school.

History

1288 an estate was detectable in this area. 1614 the estate with fields, meadows and vineyards was acquired by the Habsburg monarchy, was first described as a Favoritenhof 1623 and served as the widow's home for the Empresses Anna of Austria-Tyrol, Eleonora Gonzaga and Eleonora Magdalena Gonzaga of Mantua-Nevers. For this, the estate was remodeled in 1642 according to plans of Giovanni Battista Carlone to pleasure palace with pleasure garden called Favorita.

The emperors Leopold I, Joseph I and Charles VI. served the Favorita as a preferred summer residence. During this time, extensions were built, the in the second Turkish siege in 1683 originated ravages repaired and sold some of the fields.

Charles' VI. daughter, Maria Theresa, heiress to the throne in the Austrian dominions, in the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Kingdom of Hungary and since 1745, when her husband became Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, as Empress was dubbed, preferred as summer residence the Schönbrunn Palace and had it expanded. To this decision may have contributed that the Favorita, concerning location and architecture, with Belvedere Castle could not compete, which the for Habsburg victorious commander Eugene of Savoy, of Charles VI. richly endowed, had built about 800 meters to the east form here using a prominent hillside.

The baroque Favorita (it was by now called New Favorita, the Old Favorita had been in the Augarten) in the suburb of Wieden handed Maria Theresia to the Jesuits - with the condition in it to establish an educational institution, a knight's academy for the benefit of the universal essence, but especially the noble youth. Main task should be the raising of educated and loyal government officials and diplomats. In the 18th and 19th Century followed various extensions and increases in the building.

1783 dissolved the reformer Joseph II in the Austrian hereditary lands all knights academies, as well as the Theresianum. In 1797 Emperor Franz II as sovereign approved the reopening under the management of the Piarists. The facade was rebuilt in the classical style. After the revolution of 1848, Emperor Franz Joseph I. disposed the admission of sons of the middle class as students.

The Oriental Academy, founded by Maria Theresa in 1754, was since the 19th Century in the Theresianum. In 1900 renamed, moved the Consular Academy in 1904 in its newly constructed own building (9, Boltzmanngasse 16, since 1947 Embassy of the United States). It was in 1938 by the Nazi regime canceled. Its role was in 1964 by the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna (see below) resumed.

After the "Anschluss" of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938, the Nazis dissolved the Theresianische Academy and established on 13 March 1939, exactly one year after the "Anschluss", in the buildings a National Political Education Institute (Napola). 1944/1945, the plant was badly damaged by bombs and grenades. 1945, the buildings in the occupied postwar Austria were by the Soviet occupying power monopolised, in the four-sector city of Vienna the 4th district controlling. It handed the Theresianum over to the USIA, the administration of Soviet Property in Austria.

After the State Treaty of 1955, the Austrian State resp. the Foundation Theresianum got the property on 20 September 1955 refunded, and in September 1957, the school system of the private school with public status could be resumed. The re-establishment of the in the war damaged buildings was carried out by the State from 1956 to 1964. In 1964 in a part of the buildings the by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs established Diplomatic Academy of Vienna started operations, with which the Viennese educational establishement for this topic after 60 years returned into the Theresianum .

Since 1989, in the high school female students are accepted, too.

The gymnasium in the presence

In addition to general education, the focus of the school is placed on language education - the compulsory subjects include other than German, English, French, Latin, Russian and mathematics - and in the education to internationality. Special emphasis is placed on politeness and good appearance. An additional service is available in the areas of sport, art, creativity, information and communication technology and music, and economic projects. The school is run as half-and full boarding.

The school campus is 50,000 square meters and includes a soccer field, and a fun court, two other soccer fields, a swimming pool, a tennis court, a running track, two beach volleyball courts, a basketball court, a large, divisible gymnasium and a smaller, older hall, in both of the are climbing walls as well as other sporting items available.

Currently nearly 800 students attend the Theresianische Academy. Many come from more distant states or from abroad and have the opportunity to live in a boarding school in this case.

The selection of professors is made by the respective school management in cooperation with the Vienna Board of Education. The boarding school, as well as some activities are shared with the Lycée Français de Vienne.

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: This is one of our favorite outfits we have for guy dolls. I mean, it's so trendy. The shirt is totally like something Shelly would wear. Actually, I remember her using this shirt on my Cool Tops Kevin doll when we were kids when he was playing Francie aka Sarah's brother "Charlie." (Kevin also played Pet Pals Skipper's boyfriend Fred and Riley's (Fashion Pajamas Ashley) boyfriend Ivan.) I think Kevin wore these as Ivan too...I used this a lot on guy dolls too. This is one of our most played with outfits purely because we like the shirt so much. Mostly, I think of it as belonging to Chandler, my 1992 My First Ken doll. I don't know if I got this shirt around the time I started playing with him most of the time as my main character instead of Leroy (Water Jewel Magic Aladdin). I don't remember Leroy really wearing it, so it's possible I only got it after he was phased out of our stories for Chandler (who unlike Leroy had a lot of guy doll friends). It is also probable that I had it well before Chandler but, as it's not Leroy's kind of top--wrong cut and color scheme--I didn't play with it much until Chandler came along.

Technical Notes

The tacking edges have been trimmed entirely at the right and top edges and to just below the tacking holes on the left and bottom. There is a thick white ground which probably was prepared with too much medium, which resulted in pronounced drying cracks over the entire ground and paint surfaces. Brush and pencil underdrawing is present in the face and hair and can partially be observed with the naked eye. The figure was painted first, then the background. Prior to 1951 part of the painted image on the right and top edges had been folded over onto the side of the stretcher and attached with tacks. The painting was restored to its original size in 1951, and losses along all four edges were filled and inpainted. Retouch is also present in the cracking and is somewhat discolored.

John Bradley’s finest efforts may be his portraits of children.1 Little Girl in Lavender is exemplary in its unusual choice of colors. Black—used for the girl’s lace-edged apron, the bows on her sleeves, and the rosette at the juncture of the bodice collar—provides a striking contrast to the lavender-pink of her dress.

Bradley made a practice of providing uncommon and up-to-date accessories for his sitters to enhance the visual interest and beauty of the composition. The dainty glass basket, probably made in Bohemia around the time the painting was executed,2 is one such carefully chosen object, shown to advantage against the dark apron.

The little girl’s smooth hair is pulled back tightly revealing delicate, linear features. The wide eyes, with a line carefully drawn on the upper lid, are a distinctive characteristic in Bradley’s child-portraits. Her pale skin is accentuated by the off-the-shoulder dress and a coral necklace.3 There is little variance in light and shadow.

The smooth, porcelainlike complexion and incisive, linear facial features can also be seen in the portrait of Emma Homan Thayer of 1843/1844.4 Common to both works is the rosebush at the left,5 placement of the sitters’ feet, and kittens (climbing the bush in the Metropolitan painting). Compared to an earlier work, Girl with Doll, 1836 (AARFAC),6 with its vestige of red swag drapery and a carpet which overpowers the child’s cradle and stool, the later paintings incorporate a more balanced combination of carefully chosen colors and unusual accoutrements. These help to make Bradley’s “118 Spring Street” portraits among the most appealing representations of children from the nineteenth century.

Notes

1.Eight children’s portraits by Bradley are known. In addition to those mentioned here, there are five from the “118 Spring Street” address: Amanda Campbell (private collection); Boy on Empire Sofa (AARFAC; Rumford 1981, cat. no. 31); Child in a Green Dress (Mrs. J. Barton Phelps from the collection of the late Stewart E. Gregory, Palo Alto, California); Boy with Sinumbra Lamp (private collection); and Emma French (sale, Sotheby’s, New York, 30-31 January 1986, no. 446).

2.This information was provided by Jane Shadel Spillman, curator of American glass, Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York (letter of 19 October 1983, in NGA-CF).

3.See Abby Hansen, “Coral in Children’s Portraits: A Charm Against the Evil Eye,” Antiques no (December 1981), 1414-1431. Paintings in the National Gallery collection snowing children wearing coral necklaces range from Carlo Crivelli’s (c. 1430-c. 1495) Madonna and Child (1939.1.264), dating from before 1490, to William Matthew Prior’s (q.v.) Little Miss Fairfield (1973.83.9) of 1850.

4.Garbisch gift to MMA; Black and Feld 1966 (see Bibliography), 506, fig. 20.

5.Child in a Green Dress has a rosebush at the right, with the little girl picking roses.

6.Black and Feld 1966 (see Bibliography), 506, fig. 14.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: I know that I've had some of my Ballet Lessons Barbie things since I was a kid. I recall seeing the purple wrap sweater among my Barbie clothes back in the day. I really loved the style of it, although I didn't have much use for a ballet outfit. As an adult however, I got loads of use out of all my Ballet Lessons Barbie garments. I additionally found more in various bins and such as the years wore on. This sheer skirt and one of my wrap sweaters were both part of the "Labor Day Ladies Lot" of 2019. However, I really cannot recall where my other items originated from. I feel like I'm always grabbing for one of these pieces. It seems as though as soon as one doll no longer needs to borrow it, another doll could use it. I'm always happy to get use out of such extra items, which is why I'm a strong believer in keeping duplicated clothes. In the event that I get my hands on a Ballet Lessons Barbie, I'll have plenty of things for her to wear, and not all my old dolls will have to be undressed!

PERSONAL FUN FACT: I remember the first time I learned of the Magic of Pegasus line was back in 2012, when I acquired my "Barbie Doll Photo Album" book. At first, I wasn't too keen on the newer Barbie section--you know the dolls that were after my time. Of course, had I not gone on a dolly hiatus in 2005, there is a good chance I would have fallen in love with these Magic of Pegasus dolls in stores. Rayla and Annika are babes, and the Kelly dolls are so fantastical! What can I say, I am a sucker for dolls with glittery makeup, colorful hair, and princess themed clothes (despite the fact that I never played with princess attire). By the time I acquired my first Magic of Pegasus dolls, I had warmed up a little to the line. My Rose doll on the left and my Blush gal came from the "Memorial Day Weekend Yard Sale bin" of 2014. It was a charity yard sale that Colleen and I happened upon on our way to the town dump one Saturday. We could have taken all the doll stuff for free, since the people were wrapping up the yard sale. But we decided to donate $10 and take some, not all, of the doll stuff (I still regret this decision). I ended up with hoards of Fairytopia Barbies and other fantasy themed dolls. I thought that the Cloud Princess Kelly dolls were admittedly a little bizarre looking, but still cute nonetheless. I'll admit that I warmed up to Blush first--she reminds me of American Girl Caroline, and even back then before I had my AG doll, I thought she was stunning in a unique way. But that's not to say that Rose didn't win me over too. It's just that her eye shadow is so intensely glittery, that it is a bit overwhelming. With time though, I ended up embracing this special feature. I have a thing for dolls with glittery makeup (ahem, Wintertime Wonderland and Formal Funk Bratz). Besides, it gets boring when all Kelly dolls look the same, and as much as I appreciate a realistic looking doll, I also am fond of the more loud ones. I love how Rose has pink streaks in her hair--it makes her stand out from the crowd. She's a fun doll to dress up, albeit, less easy to dress than Blush though due to her jarring look.

My duplicated Rose on the right was also a bin doll. She was from the 2015 "Disney Store bin" that we scored at our local flea market. Like many of the dolls from said lot, Kelly did not have her original ensemble. Luckily she was a blast to pick out clothes for. I find that she is far more attractive than my first brunette Kelly. Her glitter eye shadow is much more subtle. I tried to photograph this difference for Flickr, but it doesn't capture in photos. Plus there is something a bit more flattering about the way her eyes are painted in general. I love collecting duplicated dolls for this reason--each dolly has his/her own unique personality! I will say that I also took pity on little Rose because she was one of the few Kelly dolls we got from the "Disney Store bin," and I was terrified that she'd fall out of the overflowing container and get lost! Luckily she made the trek home just fine, and has been a member of the family for many years now. I love her just as much as my first!

It was taken with Carl Zeiss (Rollei QBM) Sonnar 85mm F2.8 modified to fit Nikon DSLR.
