After a rainy, dark day around Aviemore it was a real bonus when a small gap in the clouds allowed the low sun to shine through at the end of the day. I was lucky to be in the vicinity of Loch Morlich so I rushed down to the beach to find it bathed in glorious, late light. The clouds over the Caingorms behind the trees really were this dark.
There is a lot of political bluster these days, and very unsettling news. But Big Mac, the Mackinac Bridge still stands tall in the unfriendly current of the Straits of Mackinac.

Outpacing thunderstorms moving in from the northeast, Via Rail’s westbound Canadian passes a pristine mountain lake at Henry House, Alberta, on August 9, 2016. The train will finally get a drenching from the weather at the station and service stop of Jasper.

"Rainbow" in fog - "Rainbow" dans le brouillard
View from my street on the Ottawa River.
Vu de ma rue sur la Rivière des Outaouais.
Experienced one of the worst weathers in recent summers in Iceland that day with extremely windy conditions and heavy rain. Captured this from the viewpoint at Hraunfossar Lava Falls.
Hraunfossar - Lava Falls - are beautiful and unusual natural phenomena. Clear, cold springs of subterranean water seep through the lava and run as tiny waterfalls and rapids into the Hvita River.
An image taken from the roadside on the way between Monsal Dale and Litton. One of those stormy evenings with quickly changing and fleetingly beautiful lighting conditions.
Took this shot nearly three years ago. I posted a picture recently of Echo Reservoir in Coalville Utah. This one is from the upper scenic view point on the Eastbound side of I-80. This is about 50 miles from my home in Salt Lake. I've stopped many times in my truck where the other trucks are parked.
This is a view of a few of the stones that make up the cruciform structure of the Callanish Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.
These stones have been in place for millennia and the oldest section of the structure predates the famous Stonehenge in Wiltshire by centuries. The stones themselves do not have the same impact of size of it’s the better known counterpart but it would still have been a monumental effort (sorry about the pun) to move the pieces and assemble this structure.

Für wenige Minuten kam an diesem Nachmittag die Sonne durch die dunklen Wolken, beleuchtete Schloss Burgk und den herbstlichen Wald, die sich im dunklen Wasser der Saale spiegelt.
For a few minutes that afternoon, the sun came through the dark clouds, illuminated Burgk Castle and the autumn forest, which is reflected in the dark water of the Saale River.

They say travelling is better than reading a book and I fully agree with this notion. This picture was taken on our train journey from Jungfrau(the Highest Point in entire Europe) in Switzerland. Was lucky to find a spot on the train where I could lower the windows and click as much as I could. Simply breathtaking views!

A lone Sailboat quietly drifts out into the early evening on a very cold and overcast day. From Venice Beach, California.
The scene from below Higger Tor, looking over the Derwent Valley. The last dark clouds were just being chased away by a strong winds and the sun was breaking through as I took this shot.
Looking north, mid-afternoon across foothills toward higher mountains with heavy rain from an angry dark sky...yet to the south west only thin clouds and a very bright sky. The light a magical mix of dark and light...a delight for shooting, never mind the pesky lightning bolts!
