Some believe that the War dance Societies of the Ponca and other Southern Plains Tribes were the origin of the Pow Wow. A Pow Wow is a Native American tradition that brings together many different tribes and communities. It’s a special event for Native American communities that celebrates dance, song, socializing and honors a rich heritage. While some Pow Wows are private and only for various Native American communities, many are open to the public.

'Het Speulderbos' is called ' the forest of the dancing trees'. The forest is not just mysterious, it is also very rare. It's a paradise for birds (of prey), deer, badgers and wild boars. So there is enough choice to have a good time!

Young Mizos in traditional costumes dancing in a stadium in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram.I tried my best to capture the mood but I am not very good at this.:-)However I thought my friends would find the costumes interesting.

Mizoram is a land-locked state of north-east India sharing borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. The name Mizoram derives from the words Mi (people) Zo (lofty place or hill) and Ram (Land).Hence Mizoram means Land of the Hill people. Most of the state is mountainous and 91% is forested.About 95% of the population is of tribal origin.87% of the population is Christian, having converted from animistic religions to Christianity in the first half of the 20th century. The north of the state is dominated by the Presbyterians and the south by the Baptists.During our visit a local friend took us to attend Sunday morning service in the largest Presbyterian church in Aizawl.Rate of literacy in the state is very high .

The Mizos are very fond of music and dancing.I took some shots but soon I was whirled away by three young girls to join the dancing. It was great fun.:-)

Street gig at Forbes St. Always a fun event. Today's band was 'Silk N Oak'.

that's all we can do! Enjoy it

The day after these were taken we went for "a cure" in the same bar, well we would of had a pint if the landlords daughter hadn't been a wee bitch and refused to serve us.

She had no problem serving us this night but not the next day. She would be sued if she tried that now.

The two lads with their shirts off were bet a fiver if they would do the best dance to "Mr Luvva Luvva Man" it was very very funny.I'm not really that fussed on using flash but in this case i had no other choice as the light was so bad and at the time i didn't have good enough glass on the camera.

It will be interesting to catch up with as many of the people in the photograph as possible in the coming months.

For centuries, the Apsara dance was passed down from royal family to royal family until the 1950s when Queen Preah Maha Kshatriyani Kossamak chose her granddaughter Princess Norodom Buppha Devi at age 5 to train in the ballet. By age 18, she was awarded the title of Prima Ballerina and toured internationally with the newly created Cambodian Royal Ballet to share Khmer heritage and culture with the world. This was the first time the Apsara was performed outside of the royal court. During the dark days of the Khmer Rouge from 1975 – 1979, thousands of artists, scholars, and intellectuals were tortured and murdered. It’s estimated that over 90% of the dancers and musicians in the Royal Palace and Phnom Penh were imprisoned, tortured, and/or killed. With peace restored in 1991, surviving artists, including Her Royal Highness Princess Buppha Devi herself, began the difficult task of searching for new dancers in the hopes of revitalizing this important piece of cultural heritage.

The key feature of the Apsara dance are the intricate hand movements, of which there are an unbelievable 1,500 of them to learn. The different poses are known as kbach and relate to elements of nature such as flowers, leaves, and fruit. In addition to these kbach, dancers must perfect 3,000 different poses like rolling hips, arched backs, and bent feet. Those who wish to learn this dance start when they are young, and teachers are said to use scarves to bring the fingers into the correct position until muscle memory takes over. Notice the extreme hyperextension of the fingers (try doing that with one finger without applying any outside force!). It takes 9 years to learn and perfect the dances. The movements of the whole body work as a kind of sign language where one subtle difference makes a completely different expression. For example, the jeeb, when the thumb and pointer finger are pressed together as the other three fingers fan out is a common symbol in Khmer culture. It can represent anything from bashfulness and love to laughter or sorrow. One hand with the fingers straight up and bent back can mean ‘leave’ while two hands in the same position but crossed at the wrist symbolizes ‘love’.

..but can we make it a slow one so it never ends..

I don’t get embarrassed much anymore at my age. A psychologist might tell me that is because I have lowered my expectations of myself.

But I did feel a little uneasy a few days ago on an isolated country road. My full-time wildlife spotter and I were traversing our way alongside a large partially snow-covered field when we spotted a male and female sandhill crane stopped in a field just about 15 yards from the road.

The larger male crane was seeking to impress the uninterested female with a traditional crane mating dance, jumping high into the air, picking up some dead grass and throwing it as high as he could and just generally making a fool of himself.

He must have gotten a little discouraged the lack of response as he paused when he saw our stopped vehicle. He then left his mate and came over to the edge of the field directly in front of us. With little ado, he began a dance just for me, at least I hope it was for me.

This photo gives a pretty good view of just how enormous the wingspan is of these creatures who are now flying back to Minnesota to spend time with us.
