Colorized by CupOfJoe. One of the more notable Jagdpanzer IV aces was SS-Oberscharführer Roy from the 12th SS Panzerjäger Abteilung of 12th SS Panzer Division. He was killed by an American sniper while looking out of the hatch of his Jagdpanzer IV on December 17, 1944 during the Ardennes Offensive in Belgium.

Although Planet Hollywood made it trendy for celebrities to venture into the restaurant business, Tribeca Grill redefined what it takes for that restaurant to be successful. Tribeca Grill got its start when actor Robert De Niro entered into a partnership with restaurateur Drew Nieporent in 1990, along with a number of other financial investors including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Ed Harris, Bill Murray, Sean Penn, Lou Diamond Philips and Christopher Walken. While De Niro was new to the restaurant business at the time, Nieporent brought with him a wealth of experience that would be demonstrated with the formation of his Myriad Restaurant Group that today owns and operates seven New York City restaurants and one London franchise of the popular Japanese Nobu chain.

Through their partnership De Niro and Nieporent introduced a unique American cuisine across a tastefully decorated 8,000 square foot interior. Signature dishes include a Berkshire T-bone Pork Chop and Seared Sea Scallops that are ideally washed down with one of the restaurant’s vast selections of over 1,800 wines. Tribeca Grill’s prestigious wine list has earned it the honor of being only one of only seven restaurants in the city to receive the Grand Award from Wine Spectator Magazine. Wine enthusiasts should note that the restaurant does charge a fairly significant corkage fee of $30.

The interior of Tribeca Grill features a mixture of old and new. The old is partially attributed to the large mahogany bar that was obtained from the former Maxwell’s Plum restaurant. Maxwell’s was a flamboyant restaurant that operated near the intersection of East 64th Street and First Avenue and shared a sexual ambience until it closed in 1988. A portion of the more modern décor may be attributed to the father of Robert De Niro. His art may be found to grace the many walls of Tribeca Grill.

Atop Mr. De Niro’s restaurant is the Tribeca Film Center that he similarly founded along with Jane Rosenthal to support the New York City film industry. The space offers room for producers and directors to screen their latest projects or handle nearly any other business affairs that they may need. Previous short-term tenants have included Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg amongst others.

The Film Center is also headquarters for the popular Tribeca Film Festival that began in 2002 to bolster the spirit of the New York community after 9/11. The festival’s official mission reads, “To enable the international film community and the general public to experience the power of film by redefining the film festival experience.” And based upon attendance and submissions, it appears that it has. In its initial year of 2002, the festival drew over 150,000 to its celebration. By the following year, the number of visitors had more than doubled. Today, the festival receives on the upwards of nearly 10,000 submissions annually and brings in over $600 million each year.

While originally founded with an emphasis on short films and documentaries, the Tribeca Film Festival has also been home to the premieres of some of Hollywood’s most successful films. Amongst the blockbusters that have first been screened here include Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, The Avengers and Spiderman 3.

The home of the Tribeca Grill and Tribeca Film Center has much more humble roots. This eight-store warehouse building was constructed to be the home of the Fischer Realty Company in 1905 (whose name still graces the building’s exterior between the second and third stories). The Fischer Realty Company was a part of the B. Fischer & Company that was an importer of coffees, teas and spices.

The architect of 375 Greenwich Street was Joseph Wolf. Wolf’s other most noted construction within New York is the Manhasset building at 300 West 109th Street. The Manhasset was built in 1901 as an eleven-story apartment building. Unfortunately much of the building has been severely altered and little remains of Wolf’s original design.

One other company that held offices at this address for many years was the Martinson Coffee Company (which may be recognizable as a client of the firm Sterling Cooper in Season 2 of the television series Mad Men). Martinson’s was owned by a man named Joe Martinson who sought to make the perfect cup of coffee by roasting beans individually. Whereas large coffee companies cooked their beans in large vats that ended up burning a portion of their product, Joe’s firm prided itself on nurturing the process on a much less grand scale. It was often rumored that Joe personally inspected his own beans by grabbing a handful. By “cupping” his hands to do so, it said that this is perhaps the derivation of the term “cup of Joe”. (Another tale credits an Admiral Josephus Daniels who forbid alcohol on his ships and only allowed personnel to drink coffee. Forlorn sailors were forced to request a “cup of Joe.”)

The 1920s and 1930s were the golden age of dirigibles which crossed the Atlantic Ocean in about three days -- faster than a ship. The Hindenburg was the largest airship ever built at 804 feet long and flew up to 85 miles per hour while held aloft by hydrogen, which was highly flammable. The disaster, which killed 36 people after a 60-hour transatlantic flight from Germany, ended regular passenger service by the lighter-than-air airships. (AP Photo/Murray Becker)
