Cube houses (Dutch: kubuswoningen) are a set of innovative houses built in Helmond and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level, since its main purpose is to optimise the space inside. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house corner upwards, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest. The central idea of the cube houses around the world is mainly optimizing the space, as a house, to a better distribution of the rooms inside.

Continuing my exploration of Birmingham while most folk are asleep in their beds (at least until travelling a bit further afield doesn't feel so exotic). The Cube is an eyecatching piece of architecture on its own, but I love how its modern styling contrasts with some of the older buildings that line Birminghams Canals.

Architecture in Rotterdam is known to be some of the most innovative and creative architecture in Holland. And even after more than 30 years, the cube houses (Kubuswoningen in Dutch) remain one of the city's most remarkable projects. It's easy to see why: these particular houses are 45° side-tilted cubes, optimized to make the most of the available space. The result is buildings that look, feel and behave like no other dwelling anywhere in the world.
Dutch architect Piet Blom designed Rotterdam's cube houses in the late 1970s at the request of the city's planners. Blom had already experimented with cubic architecture in the Dutch town of Helmond. So when he was offered this project in the Oude Haven area of the city center, he decided to further develop his original ideas. Interestingly, the cubic houses even form a pedestrian bridge over one of the busiest streets in the city center.

Must confess they are plastic "ice" cubes, I think they fit the bill quite well.Taken on an acrylic reflective surface with just low side light from the window and general ambient light.
In the days of pocket film cameras (instamatics etc) when flash was needed a flash bulb was used. A step towards recharging flash guns was the introduction of the Flash Cube, which had 4 flash bulbs built in. After the 4th one was used, the whole cube was disposed of.
Each face of the cube meanures 1 sq inch.

After getting a bit fed up with some fragile castle builds, I decided to take a break from that and step out of my comfort zone of building for a few days. After browsing some older builds and looking at some Dr. Seuss artwork, I came up with this: the Frog Pilgrimage to the ĆÜBÊ!
I took inspiration from the wonderful builds of Nannan Z., ForlornEmpire, and Si-MOCs! (I promised you a frog Simon, but did you expect four? :O)
