An Open Letter to the Periyar Warden .
.
We, the undersigned students, express our outrage over an incident of gender abuse at Periyar hostel on 24 Feb. night. A female ex-student was pushed by Mukesh Dhaka (B.A. third year student and a resident of Periyar hostel) and hit by his elbow. When she confronted them, Mukesh and his other friends (who were in an inebriated condition) used highly derogatory, gender-insensitive and abusive language. Later on, Mukesh beat up a north-eastern student without any provocation whatsoever. Also, Mukesh and his friends repeatedly threatened the girl's friends with dire consequences if they dare to help her. .
This is not the first time that students are raising their concern regarding incidents of sexual harassment and gender abuse in the campus. The issue of the lack of a proactive and an affective security mechanism in the campus, as well as the total insensitivity of the JNU administration (including the hostel administration) towards our serious concern has to be raised urgently by the student community. .
In the recent incident at Periyar Hostel, the response of the hostel administration was shocking. .
When the residents of the hostel went to the senior warden to protest against the incident, he tried .
to place the blame on the woman victim by asking what she was doing late at night in a boys' .
hostel, especially when she is not a student. Further, one student organization even came in .
defense of the culprit and gathered some students in front of Periyar hostel to shield him. .
Earlier, when a female student was harassed in front of 24x7 dhaba, she was charged by the .
hostel administration of going out of the hostel late at night. .
.
This incident once more underlines the need for a serious gender discourse in JNU. Each time a woman complains of harassment, inevitably she is in turn accused of 'breaking rules' or provoking men. It is an uphill fight for her to even file a complaint, far from getting justice. We demand that the culprit must be punished immediately by the hostel administration. We have to defend the gender-sensitive atmosphere of JNU, where women students feel free to go wherever they want at any time. Any justification of sexual harassment and abusive behaviour towards women by further victimizing the complainant should be unitedly resisted by the students. .
