This red/pink ring (actually it's a torus in 3D space) is an ELVES (Emission of Light and Very Low Frequency perturbations due to Electromagnetic Pulse Sources) event that happened over an active storm cell close to the borders of N Greece and SW Bulgaria on 2001 UTC, 11.10.2021. It's very rare to come across such an intense ELVES event. I've used a Sigma Art 20 mm lens at f/1.4 with 32k iso and a Sigma Art 85 mm lens at f/1.4 with 51.2 k iso. The yellow light behind the clouds, lower in the image, is the flash of the parent lightning strike. A video of the event can be found here: youtu.be/EYG4dE6KcqY

Lake Suwa was the inspiration for many of the locations in the anime movie "Your Name." I want for a dreamy, anime-like color scheme to match. This couple made for great subjects against the cotton candy sky.

Thanks to the CSSS group for making this the cover image!

From January 19 to February 6, 2018 my wife Jodie and I visited north western India with Birdtour Asia. Special thanks to tour leader Rob Hutchinson and local guide Gajendra Singh for making the trip a great success.

The expedition began with an early morning visit to the foggy Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary on the outskirts of New Delhi. From there we travelled by train to Ranthambhore National Park for a Tiger search, continued on to Tal Chhapar Sanctuary for Black Buck, visited the Jorbeer Vulture Reserve near Bikaner, checked out Khichan for the Demoiselle Crane spectacle, found an Indian Bustard in Desert National Park, picked up a few special species in Siyana, encountered an Avadavat at Mount Abu, birded the Little Rann of Kutch, saw Lion and Leopard in Gir National Park, and finished up at Bhuj with Hypocolius, White-naped Tit and Crab Plover.

Great company, wonderful food, incredible wildlife (including six species of cat), and the friendly people and places of India made for a memorable journey.

Contre-jour at dawn.

I do not train AI !

Reproduction of Trinity Test "Gadget" detonation tower near 1962 F-105D Thunderchief jet, a model nicknamed "Thud" by Vietnam War-era crews.

Location: National Museum of Nuclear Science & History; Albuquerque, New Mexico; June 21, 2024, 8:12pm

Per Wikipedia, the jet's nickname "Thud" came from the character "Chief Thunderthud" from the Howdy Doody television series (a helaciously dated native american caricature played by a white guy with a pencil 'stache). This supersonic fighter-bomber was said in its era to be a "Triple Threat" – it could bomb you, strafe you, or fall on you.

The Trinity Test detonation tower reproduction was constructed at the Museum in 2017 as dramatic housing for a reproduction of the "Gadget" test bomb exploded at the Trinity Test Site near Alamogordo, New Mexico on July 16, 1945 – so-called at the time ("gadget") to avoid words like "atomic" or "bomb" for security reasons.

Rain has been absent from much of the Sierra Nevada since May. The storm for this weekend was predicted for today, Friday, through Sunday, but now just a 60% for Sunday. Good, I get to spend a lot of Saturday raking. 🍂🍁.

The weather predictions for thoroughfares between Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, and Reno this last week included strong winds with fire hazard, followed by up to a foot of snow at pass level.

Sonnenuntergang an Bord der Color Fantasy

I just had time to catch this flash of lightning in slow motion before a huge rainstorm hit us. On replaying it, I was amazed to see the same flash four times! Taken looking just over my side fence facing west.

Video taken with the Sony RX10m4.

The typical photo facing the sun that can never succeed either than by chance, lol.
