In the near future, a unique group of female androids, sleek and strikingly human-like, has emerged with a revolutionary capacity: the ability to breathe underwater. These androids, appearing around 27 in human years, are pioneers of a new era in underwater research. They have established complex laboratories beneath the ocean’s surface, where their studies extend from the vibrant coral ecosystems to the mysterious lives of deep-sea creatures. Guided by an evolved aesthetic that echoes Steampunk – yet devoid of steam – their research facilities meld advanced technology with artistry, creating an enchanting, intricate environment that harmonises with the rhythms of the ocean. These androids, both researchers and artists, represent a fusion of life and machinery, inviting us into their world of discovery and beauty below the waves.
Beneath the waves, where light is rare,
In depths unseen, they breathe and dare.
With circuits keen and eyes that gleam,
They dive into the ocean’s dream.
Not bound by air, nor by the shore,
They roam where humans feared before.
Among the fish, with grace they glide,
In silence, where lost mysteries hide.
Their world is brass and glass and wire,
A steampunk heart, but without fire.
They seek the pulse of ocean’s art,
An android’s love for life apart.
Silence in deep blue,
androids glide with open eyes,
ocean secrets bare.
Metal breathes below,
fins and circuits intertwine,
new life, calm and slow.
This little fella took me a couple weeks to complete. His armature was part of a “Vessel” project from one of my Industrial Design courses from the Fall semester last year. The wire form was originally a 1:1 replica of a “chocolate cup” I’d seen at the MFA in Boston. Having three curvy legs it naturally looked like a small creature to me which was part of the original vessel’s charm.
The little guy is sculpted from “extra-firm” Sculpy Clay which I painted and finished off with several real-life textures.
Black and white version of classic still from Universal's, Creature From the Black Lagoon...The new version is to be released later this year. Let's hope it turns out to be better than "I Am Legend"...
Flying Creatures is an exhibit of artwork created by students from various youth art programs around Chicago.
Looking through old images I came across some images from the Creature 7 theater where Kristján Ingimarsson was performing. Interesting to see it and the costumes by Anja Vang Kragh where stunning.

We were the first ones to walk down the beach after the tide went out. About a half mile into our walk, we came across this expansive curious cross-hatch pattern of cast out sand from some kind of community of creatures. It seems they were all "keeping house" after the receding sea. It looks like they came up slinging sand either front to back or side to side, and not in a radial fashion
I dug into a few of them, but found nothing. My guess is sand fleas - little shrimp-like crustaceans. Any guesses? Anyone know the responsible party?

Gold Plaque with horned lion-griffins
Achaemenid Period
c. 6th-4th Century BC
This ornament depicts the winged lion-monster; the two creatures are shown rampant. In place of the lion’s ears they have those of a bull. The horns curl back over spiky manes and the lion’s neck is covered with a feather pattern. Sharply stylized wings extend over two of the five bosses and serve as decorative balance for the design. Heavy rings attached to the back suggest that the ornament was worn on a leather belt. the similar treatment of the lion motif on different types of objects demonstrates decorative conventions of the period.

A Dog-Like critter. Compared with the established LEGO Dog, it's just a bit larger. Then again, that LEGO Dog is HUGE. (Great Dane huge)
Working with three students in weekend sessions, the builders learned new techniques and design idea to explore their interest in Lego. These are the results of their build time.
My first Spore creature ... not too attractive, not too bright (in the brain, at least; his pink colour scheme screams out "I don't care what I look like, I'm still stronger than you!"), but this little spiked chomper will be munching on whatever he likes ... maybe even your creatures! ;)
(Yes, to those who've been obsessing with Spore for a week now, I've only spent about 8 minutes building this little dude! I just wanted to see how easy it was. The ability to record video straight from the Creature Creator is nifty.)

I photographed this family group (at least they sure acted like a family!) on an offshore rock just above the surf line on the late April weekend when I almost had the whole of Point Lobos State Reserve to myself. (I wrote about this earlier - a marathon had closed the coast highway and almost no one else was in the park.) I think the seals were a bit less wary than they might be because of the very small number of people in the park - actually, I was the only person near them for a good long time. I had a great chance to observe them uninterrupted, and from two slightly different locations - after shooting from this spot I moved far to the right where I could shoot back at the far side of the rock.
I found it interesting that they were very aware of my presence and seemed to pay more obvious attention to me than I have seen in the past. The lighter color seal on the right stared right at me for long periods of time on several occasions, even though I was quite a distance away and standing nearly motionless. Once or twice all three gazed my direction. I wasn't sure who was observing who! The darker seal on the left seemed to be the least active, only occasionally rolling around and scratching the back (yes, they do this!) of the others, especially the smaller one in the far middle in this shot.
I'm still working out the best ways to photograph creatures like these. Learning their habits a bit helps, as does arriving at the right time - in terms of season, time of day, weather, and the good fortune of being their on an uncrowded day at Point Lobos. I'd like to get shots from a lower angle, but this can be difficult. I think the seals are much less likely to be close to the shore in such places.

In the summer the are bulls pretty much solitary creatures. After an absence of 120 years plains bison were re-introduced to the park in 2005. The initial heard of 71 has grown to roughly 400.

The installation exhibits life-like attributes through forms of conversational interaction establishing communication with users that are emotive and sensorial. Conceived as an immersive installation environment, social and synthetic forms of systemic interactions allow the pets to engage and evolve their behaviors over time exhibiting features and personalities that are formed through their interactions with the general public. Pets interact and stimulate participation with users through the use of animate behaviors communicated through visual, haptic and aural communication. Pet interactions are stimulated through interaction with human users or between other pets within the population.
