Horace Pippin (1888 - 1946)

Holy Mountain I (1944)

Growing up in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Pippin had early exposure to illustrations from the Bible and hymnals. Holy Mountain, I was inspired by the prophecy of a “Peaceable Kingdom” in the book of Isaiah, which describes a paradise where all creatures will live in harmony. Unlike the Bible’s description, Pippin’s painting exhibits moments of secular strife. While the foreground depicts predators and prey laying together in accordance to scripture, the background reveals threatening soldiers prowling the forest next to a graveyard. Holy Mountain, I shares the inscribed date of June 6th, 1944 with D-Day, reinforcing ideas of war and peace. This dynamic had personal significance. Pippin served in World War I, and the figure at center is likely a self-portrait. “If a man knows nothing but hard times he will paint them,” the artist said. “For he must be true to himself, but even that man may have a dream, an ideal—and Holy Mountain is my answer to such painting.”

This World Class attraction was everything we expected and more. Construction has just begun on a major expansion, but that has been managed in such a way that it does not in any way detract from the experience now.

This album focuses on the artwork inside the buildings and on the other interior spaces including the Eleven Restaurant and the Gift Shop. A separate album posted a few days ago is devoted to the two April mornings that we spent exploring just some of the trails that crisscross the 120 acres of Arkansas forest around the museum.

Alice Walton and her co-creative team can be proud of the vision and execution of everything on this 120 acre site.

"Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is a museum of American art in Bentonville, Arkansas. The museum, founded by Alice Walton and designed by Moshe Safdie, officially opened on 11 November 2011. It offers free public admission.

Alice Walton, the daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton, spearheaded the Walton Family Foundation's involvement in developing Crystal Bridges. The museum's glass-and-wood design by architect Moshe Safdie and engineer Buro Happold features a series of pavilions nestled around two creek-fed ponds and forest trails. The 217,000 square feet complex includes galleries, several meeting and classroom spaces, a library, a sculpture garden, a museum store designed by architect Marlon Blackwell, a restaurant and coffee bar, named Eleven after the day the museum opened, "11/11/11". Crystal Bridges also features a gathering space that can accommodate up to 300 people. Additionally, there are outdoor areas for concerts and public events, as well as extensive nature trails. It employs approximately 300 people, and is within walking distance of downtown Bentonville."

Just for Halloween...

These two Jack-o-Lanterns were designed and carved by my daughter. The one with the big teeth is supposed to be some kind of carnivorous fish thing.

I photographed them in the dark with my camera controls set to full manual. Then I modified them a little in post using ACDSee 5 Pro exclusively. Some of the modifications included adding a water reflection effect to emphasize the sense that they are water creatures. Then, since I have fallen in love with ACDSee's Orton Effect, I added that as well, but increased the transparency to reduce the contrast and retain more detail. Overall, I think it gave the image a bit of a painterly feel without completely divorcing it from the photograph that it really is.

Happy Halloween!

Feb Daily Challenge, Day 18

Student work. Students were shown examples of the Surrealistic painting technique of decalcomania used by Max Ernst, then given indistinct forms of dried Great Stuff spray foam insulation to interpret and transform into a fantastical creature of their own invention. Lesson plan originally developed by one of my former student teachers, Clint Jackson.

Can you see the transparent creature coming from the white ball on the right? The little worm next to it was some transparent, but more white like a larvae, from the naked eye. Removed using Eucerin Advanced Skin Therapy Ointment.
