Thank you so much to Simona Janek for teaching a CreativeLive Workshop. This is a self-portrait glamour shot for makeup after Simona Janek taught Hair and Makeup for CreativeLive. I went bold with red lips and purple eye shadows. I work long hours so I couldn't find a model and finally just set this on timer!
I decided to curl my short hair with a curling iron and put primer, foundation, concealer powder, a bit of blush, lined my eyes, traced my brow with the same eyeliner pencil I used for the eyeliner. I only had one! After priming my lids, I put eyeshadow and and curl my eyelashes and put mascara.
As for the pose I tried Sue Bryce's technique of ballet hands across the decolletage.

This is my attempt to implement some of the techniques presented in the CreativeLive workshop this weekend, "Beyond Photography - Artistic Post Production with Doug Landreth." Very cool workstop with crazy amounts of information given. I am going to have to go through the videos several times.

After watching Andy and Mikey ( www.lightenupandshoot.net ) on www.creativelive.com it has got me into gear to approach people and ask them if they would like their photos taken and do a "100 Strangers Project" so here is Number 2. All my shots for this project will be SOOC with only cropping done in Lightroom 3 so that I can gauge my photography skills slowly progressing and not my editing. Please feel free to critque as it will give me better insight into where things could be improved .

I've just completed Day 1 of CreativeLive's Beyond Photography - Artistic Post Production with Doug Landreth.
This is my homework assignment. The task is to:
1. Start with a photo of a single element that is regional to our area.
I started with the seagull on a post, (same bird, different pose here).
2. Create a layered file, with that single element image, blending in some textures.
To create my texture I combined a couple of different beach sand shots from last summer, as well as the sailboat shot I posted here.
I like the composition. Now that it's posted though, i think my texture layer is a bit strong.
I'm looking forward to Day 2 of the course tomorrow!
I was wondering what to shoot lastnight for my part in the CreativeLIVE comp and I decided to try shooting a flower from a nice bouquet that my wife got from her birthday.
*Lighting*
This shot was taken with a softbox behind center and above (the softbox has extra white material added to the sides to surround the subject), with a gridded strobe on the right. A small white card was placed at the front left.
Since she is a senior I guess I better get going on Sr. picks. Advantage - we get to do them all year. Trying to go lighter on processing ala Voclain on CreativeLive. Einstein in Apollo 50" CR, Einstein in umbrella next to camera for fill. AB800 in gridded BD on hair from behind. Flash and gel on background from fabric store. White reflector either underneath or CL.

I had some trouble shooting backlit subjects a while ago. Watching the CreativeLive Exploring the light with Rick Sammon and had it drummed into me--expose for the highlights. I sat little boy blue infront of a window--tv on to Mickey Mouse Club camera left and exposed for the highlights on the very rim of his face--the rest of his face appeared pretty dark--but it worked nicely--I knew that--but forget it when I go to shoot and am nervous. Shame on me. :)

For round 42 of the Get Pushed! group, my push partner Safar challenged me to do a portrait where a shadow pattern is visible on the subject.
The typical portrait usually includes the use of mini-blinds to create a striped shadow effect. I knew I could use that as a fallback if necessary, but the blinds in our house are bigger and would not have as pleasing of a look.
Fortunately for me I found a grid at work that goes under a bank of fluorescent lights that had broken and was going to be discarded. It was just the right size to fit in front of my 2x2 softbox. In order to get the grid shadow, I had to play around with not only the distance from the softbox, but even removing the front cover of the softbox to get a stronger light source to better define the shadow.
I knew I wanted half of her face in shadow, but how dark to have it be? Option 1 was to use a black cloth opposite the light and grid so as to reduce the amount of light reflected. The other option was to use a reflector to bounce the light back on her face to give it better lighting. Obviously I chose the second setup for this picture.
Finally, in shooting raw you get your choice of color or black and white. It just seemed that the B&W versions were a bit more classic and timeless. (converted to B&W using the green filter setup). This image is my wife's favorite of the set. My favorite is the next one.
Thanks to my wife for agreeing to sit for the portrait session (and let me try some portrait tricks learned from free photography classes on CreativeLive.com) And thanks Saf for the push - the shadow pattern portion definitely kicked up the challenge a notch or two, and helped me learn more about lighting and shadow use and definition. Hope you approve!

After thrilling my fiancee by spending all weekend watching Zack Arias' three-day studio lighting workshop on CreativeLive, (Buy the pass to watch it all - I learned a frickin' ton. Thanks, Zack!) I couldn't help breaking out the umbrellas and getting a little portrait practice in. Stan here (I think that's what he said his name was) wanted something moody, so I zoomed the flash on the bedsheet (ahem, background), scoring a nice vignette.

This was the first shoot that I did both hair and makeup and the shooting. I learned so much from Simona and Sue but still see all the "misses" in my reel. Sue has inspired me so much to continue to work on moving my business in this direction. I'm so excited to do more.
Not only did I use Simona's hair and makeup tips and Sue's posing techniques during this shoot, but I was also able to use some really great Photoshop tips from Sue in order to really make my friend shine in this photo. Thank you, CreativeLIVE!!
52 weeks project.
Cheating again. This is not a photo from this week. This was taken some months ago, but I dont want to delay this already delayed project. This weekend I have o good excuse because I spend it watching the Christa Meola Boudoir workshop at CreativeLive. Awesome.

OK maybe not the real thing but I don't have money for that sort of kit so there.
I literally just got out of bed, saw the light coming in (I had the translucent white blind down) and took this. My arms made funny shapes in my eyes :)
The final session of David DuChemin's creativeLIVE class is wrapping up as I type. Today was a lot more about post processing and analysing others work though the last 20mins or so were great! He answered some really good questions about commercial work and staying true to your brand over just being a sheep to whatever client may approach you for whatever type of photography. Overall this was, for sure, the most benefitial class I've ever sat through for photography, that one weekend just beat the life clean out of my entire AS-level photography course 2 years ago. It wasnt all artsy and ignorant of the craft of taking pictures and the technicalities involved but it gave a very very strong footing in how vision and creativity gives purpose to learning theory and craft and how theory informs and helps expand upon and achieve said vision which in turn cycles back and pushes you to experiment more in the craft etc.
To anyone that missed it I would highly reccommend buying the download of the weekend when it's released. For now I have the pages of notes on Wordpad to transfer into the moleskine but my actual perception of how I take pictures has changed now, in a good way. Stuff that before seemed unreachable or over my head makes sense now. I now know what needs to be done find that unique vision or my voice in photography (but its as long and frustrating as learning theory and practise).
This sort of stuff definately feels like a step up from my airy fairy approach before, it almost demands that you are sure that this is what you want to do, you cant really go about it passively. This coincides exactly with what that photography lecturer told me in the interview, that I need to make a serious decision what I want to do with my life. And now that I have its comforting and exciting to see things stepping up already :)

Last week I watched Don Giannatti present a course on table top, product and still life photography on creativeLIVE. It was a very inspirational course and so I decided to have a go at recreating a shot similar to one of Don's. I say similar, this is a blatant erm, dedication. So thanks, Don, and thanks, creativeLIVE for a great course.
In case you were wondering, this snare drum is awesome! It's not cast in a mold like most solid steel snare drums, it's actually cut from a 6mm thick pipe and then routed to 3mm in the middle. At 5.5" tall, that makes this a *very* heavy snare drum but it's very versatile (that is to say, it sounds great when the heads is cranked up nice and tight, and also when it's a little looser).

I think I was shooting a D70 and for sure auto mode. I just like all the lines in this image.
Note: I was just listening to CreativeLive and Jared Platt on Workflow in Lightroom 4 a three day siminar--free (www.creativelive.com) He said that if you shoot in jepg you will lose a lot of color variation as it is only 8 bit color and shooting raw is 16 bit or 64 bit. My computers wouldn't handle 64 bit. He said the colors multiply exponentially from 8-16 bit. So Now I would what you would see if I shot raw?
