A typical Texas coffee bar...lol..Just kidding. The Java Ranch is located about an hours drive from Austin in Frederickburg, Texas. Which, use to be just a wide spot in the road back in the 50ies, but now it has turned into a tourist trap, okay, tourist hangout. The town was started by German immigrants who started coming to south Texas around 1830. WoW! What a ride that must have been. Anyway, now the town and area are know for antiques and wine. Plus, all the building, downtown, look very retro to late 1800's or early 1900. Don't know if you can read it, but on the back of the T-Shirt, center far left, it says, Instant Human, Just add Coffee..:)
Going hiking tomorrow. A friend of mine is taking me to some new trails. Looking forward to that.

A photograph of the southern span of the Deception Pass Bridge looking west at sunrise. I found this vantage point while parked on Pass Island (between the two spans) and hiking down the rocky cliffs just above the waters edge.
Got to hang out with the CreativeLive team during a dry-run for filming Lance Keimig and Ian Norman for their Night Photography week.
As it turned out, this was the night the Chinese rocket booster from Chang Zheng 7 chose to re-enter the atmosphere over CA and NV. Not only were we in one of the darker places in California, but I was with 3 very talented videographers with Sony A7S camera bodies!
This shot was from later that night, but I thought it was appropriate. Videos of the rocket booster re-entry can be seen here (I'm the guy that earned them a NSFW warning)

Much of this series is about complacency, about being trapped in your circumstances without realizing there is a way out. This image really embodies that for me, particularly in the way that we hold on to what we know even when the world around us is shifting; even when we are upside down and lost. To prefer familiarity rather than outside dangers. To rather rot in comfort than find fear in the unknown.
Or at least, that is my personal fear. That is what I see happening around me. That is what I won't let happen in my life.

After watching Brooke Shaden's workshop on CreativeLIVE I was inspired to mess with my photos a little more and try to create a different environment artificially. When I originally shot this I had no idea what I was going to do with it, I was just excited to learn that I could shoot at this angle with my tripod.
Initially this was going to be something morbid and funeral-related but instead it turned into more of a whimsical star-gazing type piece.
Hope you're all having a splendiferous Saturday.
Explored! #35 on 28 Oct 2012. I took this photo out of the Canoe Studio window during the live broadcast of Creative Live - NYC. I used the Edge 80 with my FujiFilm X-Pro1 camera!

Some of you know that I have pretty extreme social anxiety. I've never understood how to interact with people or make friends, how to just have a good time and relax. On a scale of 1-10, I'm usually an 11, bursting with excessive energy - nervous or creative, usually. Teaching has been the single way that I've been able to cultivate community, talk to people, form friendships, and get rid of my nerves. I'd rather talk to a room of 5,000 people rather than have a single conversation. I might be backwards, but to me, connection has always felt most natural when I'm teaching. So thank you for allowing me space and support to cope with life, form bonds with you, and guide you through the education I put out there. I hope it is as valuable to you as it is to me.
Can you please help me celebrate my new class "Creating a Fine Art Series" by doing 2 things? 1) Comment here to enter the giveaway, and 2) Click the link cr8.lv/fine-art-series to RSVP for the FREE premiere of my class on Tuesday at 9am PST. It will replay for free for 24 hours.

Sand. The passing of time. Becoming dust.

Thank you Creative Live crew for the enormous effort of getting hundreds of pounds of sand into this little room, and then, fast as could be, getting it back out and then again when you donated it to a playground. The whole of it made me so happy. Seeing this scene come to life thrilled me. And I challenged myself, too, to use this little room with such direct light. I'm so glad I did.

We sawed the bed in half and brought it to the abandoned house I was shooting in with the intent of propping it up on a wall. I quickly realized there were no walls big enough for the bed, so I had to come up with a plan B immediately to keep the filming day moving along at pace. I decided to do this shoot outside instead of inside, making it the only outdoor image of the series.
These moments are the best for an artist, where you are forced to think deeply about your message and adjust your plans to best deliver your intention. The field provided a natural, clean backdrop for the bed and followed in line with nature taking over these man-made things. It also gave me a different angle to play with, and gave our model room to explore her pose. Though simple, I ended up quite fond of this image <3

Another photo from the time travel series. I finished a Joel Grimes workshop and I am applying what I learned.
I totally missed #WorldPhotographyDay yesterday, but I'm remedying that today with this celebration. For the sake of uplifting on such an important day for so many of us, please tag someone you admire in the photography field.
Photography has been my life for a decade. From the first time I took a self-portrait in a small apartment in Philadelphia to now, still taking self-portraits in my more comfortable home in Arizona, I have loved each second of how photography has transformed me.
Photography gave me a clear voice - not just a voice, because that I already had - but it sharpened my voice like a knife's edge. It gave me a community of weirdos - is there any better kind? And it gave me a path that led me to wonders I hadn't dreamed of.
All of this not without help. This #worldphotographyday I celebrate the people who have been there for me consistently to say "who you are and what you do is important, even when it doesn't feel like it". Some of them are companies that feel more like family who took a chance to help launch and sustain my career, like: CreativeLive that took a chance on me to teach their first fine art class that went on to reach thousands upon thousands in our community. Like Sony who took a chance on me to represent fine art in their Artisan lineup to make all the weirdo creators feel like they had someone like themselves represented in the industry.
Like White House Custom Colour who from day 1 told me that no matter what I ever do for them, whether it be absolutely nothing or everything, they simply want to support someone who stood for something good in the world.
Thank you for recognizing me as a leader in the photographic arts - I re-stake my claim that I am a curious beginner soul and I vow to keep learning.
And to the individuals, too many to list, who have held me up in my art and in my doubts, in my fear and in my triumphs...for it takes a person who holds you up in all those circumstances to be considered real and lasting...you have been my photography heroes, even those of you who aren't photographers. Really, I mean YOU, this community, my beacon and light in dark times. I wish I could tell you what you mean to me. It's everything. We are everything.
"There is, one knows not what sweet mystery about this sea, whose gently awful stirrings seem to speak of some hidden soul beneath..." - Herman Mellvile .
Taking self portraits with people around can be a bit awkward 😯 I'm in a long flowy dress, barefoot and making weird poses next to this boat - they must think in crazy, I thought to myself 😂😆 but taking these photos was one of the highlights of our trip! There's just something about this part of the creating process that I love 😊 💙 getting my feet muddy and my dress wet, what could be more fun 😂
.
Thanks to @stevierayrosario for your help! 😁 .

At the end of my Creative Live class when I finished making this series, I printed each image for a segment we filmed about how to print your images. During the wrap party, I gifted a print to each student and central crew member as a thank you for all the hard work that was put in. To my surprise, each person wanted a different print. No two people asked for the same one. It was a great lesson in seeing how different people are impacted by different things; how the smallest detail can draw someone in, how our experiences contribute hugely to how we interpret art.
I had felt a little down on this image, like it wasn't a big enough concept, or maybe like it fell flat in some way. But when I gifted it to Sarit, an in-studio audience member / friend, I saw it through her eyes. I saw why she loved it and it made me love it, too. Our art only contains one story if we keep it to ourselves. When we give our art to others it becomes imbued with their stories too, and what a gift that is. To see the world through someone else's experience - that is why I love sharing what I do.

The look you get when you want to take pictures too close to dinner time.
Watched some of the Scott Robert Lim "Real World Lighting" class on Creative Live today and had to play around with some of the ideas, apparently a little to close to dinner time for my model.

This image is my entry for the August challenge for the Facebook [fa] Fine Art Photography group titled 'Innocence'. www.facebook.com/groups/FAPinspiredbyBrookeShaden
The theme is “New Beginnings”. I knew exactly the type of image I wanted to create. You can read all about how this image was created over on my blog
I really wanted this image to convey the fragility and fear of innocence. In brief, I bought the nest in a craft shop, then polystyrene eggs, we painted them pale brown then speckled them with a toothbrush. It was messy! Then the cat, nest and flowers we photographed together, then Sam was added afterwards. For the wings I bought individual feathers and photographed them one by one against a black backdrop, holding them with two sets of tweezers. I then masked them using an awesome new technique that I recently learnt at a CreativeLive class with Aaron Nace. I had several attempts at the wings and I am happiest with these.
You can watch my behind the scenes speed edit of this image and see how the wings were made here.. youtu.be/A_pl1sgcm6U
Have an inspired day!
I had an absolute blast creating this picture - first shooting it on CreativeLive and then editing it for a video that I'll be releasing tomorrow. Lately I've been overcome with inspiration, seeing it everywhere I go, and I can't help but believe in inspiration as a state of mind more than anything else. For me, it is an openness to all life experiences and a willingness to invest time in why they are special to you. I hope everyone has a beautifully inspired day!

To grow so comfortable in your space that you don't notice the decay around you; to be so unwilling to move that you grow into your dormancy.
This idea for moss was one of the first I had for the series, but on our setup day I realized the moss wouldn't stay on the wall long enough to set up ahead of time. On the shooting day, we didn't have more than 15 minutes allotted to any given shoot, so I didn't have time to tape the moss to the wall. The in-studio audience, my new forever friends, went to work taping moss to the wall and in no time my imagination came to life thanks to their capable hands.
Being rendered immobile by slow-creeping, quiet, delicate nature has to be one of my favorite things - my imagination just goes wild for it. There is so much eerie beauty in the conflict between softness and destruction.

Created for my newest class: www.creativelive.com/class/fine-art-photography-the-compl...
As many of you know, I spent a month filming a 26+ hour class for Creative Live called "Fine Art Photography: The Complete Guide" which wrapped about a month ago. During that time I planned, shot, edited and printed a 10 image series. The class goes through that creation process from start to finish, and I'm so excited to share all of them with you! I'm releasing this series in the order it is meant to be viewed in.
The first image in this series, titled "Hollowness", begins the journey of what it means to be trapped, held back, or complacent in your life. Visually, this series will string together natural elements inside the "home", our subjects in different ways and at different levels held down by their circumstances...or, in a couple rare cases, breaking free of them. The series is called "Interval".
I have a little habit of asking for impossible things - not just from other people, I ask it of myself, too! In this case, I asked Creative Live if we could transport the crew, models, and students to an abandoned building. The problem was, Seattle isn't crawling with big enough, safe enough buildings to galavant around in. So, we drove 2 hours each day outside of Seattle to shoot this series. They helped haul sand in, a big fish tank, vines, dirt and all manner of interesting elements to the set. Will release the rest this month!

I watched Brooke Shaden on CreativeLIVE last week, and was glued to my screen for 3 days!
She is a flickr gal turned fine art photographer and teacher.
It was a very inspiring 3 days... I learned a few editing tricks... and thought I would edit a photo I've been hanging on to for years because I just didn't have any ideas for it...
Now of course this is not my style...and I don't plan to start imitating her style! lol... It is just a one off homage to a flickr icon ;)
Happiest of happy new years!!! I have been terrible about updating my flickr :( boo! Sometimes you wish to be busy and then when it happens, you want to wish it away. But I am so happy and wouldn't change anything for the world. I've already done 10 shoots so far this year and I have a backlog of 15 images to edit, so I have to get moving! Tomorrow I'm headed to St. Louis to teach at After Dark and then going to Florida for SYNC to lecture there as well. But after all of *that*...I get to go to Harry Potter at Disney World!!!! I am so excited, I might throw up. Happy throw up!
In Feb I'll be teaching at creativeLIVE, all the while working on so many photos I might burst. I am so excited for creativity this year. I even started a new blog called Promoting Passion that aims to promote passion in my life and in the lives of others. I have a weekly video posting every Monday. The next one is about working with your friends as models.
Are you having a good new year? A great one? I am so grateful for all that Flickr has been and is, and so glad I can share my thoughts here.
Started playing around a bit and found the Canon "Creative Filters" menu in the camera. This filter is called "Miniature", supposed to replicate a Tilt Shift Lens. I normally don't use these but I really like what it did to this shot. One thing to remember is that using these filters you'll wind up with your picture only as a JPG, no RAW.
Only post processing on this is a resize in GIMP, otherwise it's straight out of the camera. I think I might just like my new toy!

A Self-Portrait after what feels like a really long time.
Wow... watching Brooke Shaden's workshop gets me so inspired - every single time :)
A big thanks to CreativeLive for broadcasting it again.
I love doing client-shoots...but SPs always gonna remain my first love.
With every new image I feel so much more connected to myself. It's like - those ideas have been trapped inside my head and letting them out make me feel free. It's the joy of creation. :)
Little bit about the image - I saw this image in my tumblr feed and it inspired me so much. My first thought was - I love her pose, specially how her hand looks... and then I just had to create this SP. Initially I wanted to title it as - "Bird in Hand" but during the process of creation, it started gaining a whole new meaning in my heart and that's why this new title.
Week #52
Here we are. The last picture from my 52 weeks Project. Well it took a bit more than 52 weeks (54 actually) but hey, it happens.
So all started with this picture. I wanted to start a project to get more lighting skills. To be able to control the light enough to get the mood I wanted in each picture. As wasn't brave enough to start a 365 I went with a 52 weeks project.
I've learned A LOT. Really. I want to believe that since the first week of this 52 project, my work has improved.
I've learn a lot about lighting, about how to set up a photoshoot, build a team, about how to edit my images to get the exact look I wanted, and more important, I've learned a lot about me. Since Liam's birth, I have to admit that things became harder...Without my amazing wife and her support, I wouldn't be able to end this project. So it's also hers.
I wanted to finish this project with the same person I've started with but unfortunately, Awa wasn't available.
So once again I had to build a team and convinced them to join the fun!
Fortunately Sarah-Jennifer was available and my creative team also (Marie-Eve & Weena).
I was going for something with gold. Some studio stuff, some beauty stuff, something creative with gold.
We shot different styles, some beauty, some fashion but I wanted something different for this last week of my project. Few weeks ago Lindsay Adler hosted a CreativeLive class on retouching and shoot something that highly inspired me. A headshot with some very stylized red glasses.
As I wanted something with gold tones, I went to the dollar store and built a $3 high fashion shades. LOL
Thanks to her retouching classes I've been able to edit this image to get exactly what I had in mind.
And this is my victory folks. Being able to give birth to a concept I had in mind!
But this wouldn't happen without the help of my models and creative talents. So thanks to every single person that stepped in front of my camera during this past year. You guys are more than awesome and I'm honored you are part of this project.
Thanks to my creative talents who took part to this project (MUA and Hairstylist) and helped me to give birth to concepts I had in mind. Thanks a lot folks, without you I wouldn't be able to make it!
Thanks also to you my awesome flickr friends for your support and being such an amazing source of advices and inspiration. Love you all!
Special s/o to Ainsley because your 52 Project inspired me to start mine and especially this image. Honestly I love it so bad that I want to hand it on my wall.
S/O to my fellow 52ers, may the force be with you, to my Toronto gang aka C&C production and to my french connection.
What's next? Well I still have a lot of stuff to edit and share with you guys. After that I'll probably have a break, make a book from this project and update my website. I also have few ideas in mind that I couldn't add to my 52 Project. I'll definitely slow down but it's no over, it's just a new begining...
Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed it!

Semaine #52
