Catania
Catania (Greek: Κατάνη – Katáni; Latin: Catăna and Catĭna) is an Italian city on the east coast of Sicily facing the Ionian Sea, between Messina and Syracuse. It is the capital of the eponymous province, and with 298,957 inhabitants (752,895 in the Metropolitan Area) it is the second-largest city in Sicily, the ninth in Italy and the largest Italian city without being the capital of a region.
Catania's Renown in Antiquity
Catania was the birth-place of the philosopher and legislator Charondas; it was also the place of residence of the poet Stesichorus, who died there, and was buried in a magnificent sepulchre outside one of the gates, which derived from thence the name of Porta Stesichoreia. (Suda, under Στησίχορος.)
Xenophanes, the philosopher of Elea, also spent the latter years of his life there,[21] so that it was evidently, at an early period, a place of cultivation and refinement.
The first introduction of dancing to accompany the flute, was also ascribed to Andron, a citizen of Catania (Athen. i. p. 22, c.); and the first sundial that was set up in the Roman forum was carried thither by Valerius Messala from Catania, 263 BC.
But few associations connected with Catania were more celebrated in ancient times than the Legend of the Pii Fratres, Amphinomus and Anapias, who, on occasion of a great eruption of Etna, abandoned all their property, and carried off their aged parents on their shoulders, the stream of lava itself was said to have parted, and flowed aside so as not to harm them.
Statues were erected to their honor, and the place of their burial was known as the Campus Piorum; the Catanaeans even introduced the figures of the youths on their coins, and the legend became a favorite subject of allusion and declamation among the Latin poets, of whom the younger Lucilius and Claudian have dwelt upon it at considerable length.
The occurrence is referred by Hyginus to the first eruption of Etna that took place after the settlement of Catania.
Locational significance
One of the most serious eruptions of Mount Etna happened in 121 BC, when great part of Catania was overwhelmed by streams of lava, and the hot ashes fell in such quantities in the city itself, as to break in the roofs of the houses.
Catania was in consequence exempted, for 10 years, from its usual contributions to the Roman state. (Oros. v. 13.) The greater part of the broad tract of plain to the southwest of Catania (now called the Piana di Catania, a district of great fertility), appears to have belonged, in ancient times, to Leontini or Centuripa (modern Centuripe), but that portion of it between Catana itself and the mouth of the Symaethus, was annexed to the territory of the latter city, and must have furnished abundant supplies of grain.
The port of Catania also, which was in great part filled up by the eruption of 1669 AD, appears to have been in ancient times much frequented, and was the chief place of export for the corn of the rich neighboring plains. The little river Amenanus, or Amenas, which flowed through the city, was a very small stream, and could never have been navigable.

PANORAMA CITY - The Los Angeles Fire Department's Recruit Training Academy Class 22-2 celebrated their class graduation on December 15, 2022, as they became proud probationary members of the LAFD.
Friends and family of the graduates were joined by City of Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley and civic and community leaders, in congratulating and welcoming the 48 newest members of the Department in a ritual filled ceremony that was also streamed live on-line.

Popularly known as the "Black Knight", the SKXA49K was also available with a silvery white model, the SKXA47K or the "White Knight". Besides automatic, Seiko also released limited quantities of Kinetic and quartz powered versions. This and the quartz and Kinetic Knights are discontinued models.
Photographed with my former Canon PowerShot S2 IS with a polarizer filter. Due to the curved watch crystal, I could not totally eliminate the reflection of the table lamp on the glass.
A few years ago, I subscribed to Amazon S3, but after backing up just a fraction of data over to S3, I noticed that my monthly cost has jumped to $200 USD / month, and that was not chewable, so I gave it up.
Last year, a friend asked me to take a look at Amazon Glacier, and it looks more economical, but it is still not very ideal. The ideal solution is just to have the data somewhere else just in case. The CrashPlan Unlimited gives me unlimited storage for $60 USD / year, and that seems almost too good to be true. But I had to do something about my archive.
So WTF are those 1.7TB of files there? Just my RAW archive. I need to store them somewhere offsite. Well, according to the software it would take 6 months for me to complete my current backup. I have a 20Mbps up/down line in Hong Kong, but the transfer rate is at around 1Mbps so it would take some time. Unlike Amazon services, there is no way to send them an HDD and let them store the data for me. But again, pricing is unbeatable.
Meanwhile, I still subscribe to a 500GB Dropbox for a cool $50 USD / month. This I use mostly for design and programming projects. There is truly no way I can imagine paying 2TB storage on Dropbox.
So we shall see what happens.
I am _still_ investigating a NAS RAID for local use, and another local project drive for videography. Most probably would go for Synology DiskStations but haven’t really made up my mind yet.

DOWNTOWN - A major emergency structure fire consumed a large downtown Los Angeles flooring business early Sunday morning, with unseasonal weather causing a strong and persistent smoke odor to linger across the greater Los Angeles area for more than two days.
Due to weather conditions, residual smoke from this fire may be noted in the greater Los Angeles area until Tuesday afternoon.
The fire was reported at 2:57 AM on August 21, 2022, bringing the first of more than 150 Los Angeles Fire Department responders to 1228 South Compton Avenue, where firefighters arrived quickly to find heavy smoke and fire within a 15,000 square foot U-shaped one-story metal clad commercial building housing C.Y. Flooring, a purveyor of wood, laminate and vinyl flooring products.
Firefighters forced entry onto the property and into the well secured premises to battle fierce flames, which involved retail space and dense warehousing of flooring products within conjoined metal structures.
As fire swept through the main building and into an annex, firefighters were forced to transition to defensive operations, successfully preventing fire from consuming the firm's office space or damaging a pair of immediately adjacent industrial buildings.
The non-injury fire was brought under control in just 83 minutes with the extinguishment of active flame. No injuries were reported.
With countless tons of smoldering debris and physically unstable building remnants, the LAFD assigned more than a dozen personnel to remain continuously on scene through Tuesday, deploying heavy equipment such as excavators and the LAFD RS3 Robotic Firefighting Vehicle to abate structural hazards, overhaul the scene and further soak the hot and smoking mountain of debris.
The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.
