MID-CITY - The Los Angeles Fire Department rescued three pet cats from a smoke-charged Mid-City apartment Wednesday evening, as they battled the flames of a kitchen fire, but only one of the pets was able to be successfully resuscitated by responders.
The first of several 9-1-1 calls were received at 5:19 PM on October 19, 2022, summoning LAFD Firefighters to the 5100 block of West Pickford Avenue in the Mid-City area of Los Angeles.
Firefighters arrived quickly to find smoke showing from one downstairs unit of an eight unit two-story apartment building. Though witnesses described the apartment's two occupants as having recently departed, LAFD personnel commenced a well-coordinated interior attack on the flames with a simultaneous search of the premises, to assure no person or pet was in peril.
Despite heat, thick smoke and excessive personal storage within the unit, the firefighter search team quickly determined there were no human occupants, but discovered three seemingly lifeless cats, which were swiftly moved outdoors to fresh air where #lifesaving efforts were commenced.
Though two of the cats were sadly determined to be beyond medical help, the third was confirmed to have a pulse and be breathing, and was provided oxygen by LAFD responders. Following 10 minutes of continuous oxygen therapy and hands-on care, the surviving cat stood up and interacted with firefighters.
Twenty-nine LAFD Firefighters under the command of Battalion Chief Paul Pham, took less than eight minutes to access, confine and fully extinguish flames within the kitchen area of the apartment. No civilian or responder injuries were reported.
Though the fire appeared to have originated near a sizeable amount of electrical equipment kept within the kitchen, the specific cause of the fire is undetermined.
Monetary loss from the fire is still being tabulated. The 4,585 square-foot apartment building, constructed in 1930, did not feature optional fire sprinklers.
The surviving cat was entrusted to the temporary care of a neighbor, until the pet owner's return.

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 12, 2018, Thousands of counter-protesters took to the parks and streets of Washington, D.C. in response to a planned “Unite the Right 2” rally of white nationalists on the one year anniversary of deadly violence in Charlottesville, VA. The 2018 edition of the racially charged “right wing” event proved to be a failure for organizers as less than 20 individuals made an appearance in front of the White House rally site, and appeared to make a hasty departure despite police escort and protection. The energized counter-protesters, better organized and with an exponentially larger presence, at times vocalized anti-fascist and anti-racist sentiments, but was mostly contained by a large police presence. During the 1917 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, one counter-protester, Heather Heyer, was killed by a neo-nazi and two Virginia state troopers died in a helicopter accident.

During 2021–2022, CC has been celebrating the 20th anniversary of our founding in 2001 and the first release of the CC licenses in 2002, successfully concluding an ambitious fundraising campaign to support programs like Open Culture, Open Climate, and Open Education, and to help ensure CC’s ongoing sustainability.
CC chapters worldwide marked the anniversary locally with events, activities, and projects in November and December 2022.
Creative Commons Nederland celebrated this with a potluck lunch. The recipes of this lunch will be bundled in a booklet that will be published with a CC BY-SA 4.0 license.
Duting the celebration the participants also looked back on 18 years CC in The Netherlands and talke about future challenges and plans.

Habitat est un diorama fabuleux et illuminé. Plantes, animaux et humains cohabitent dans cet univers miniature qui peut devenir géant si on le regarde de tout près. Une maison voyage à travers les paysages et à travers le temps. Elle se demande quel type de foyer elle pourrait être dans chacun des mondes.
À propos d’aatoaa :
Le couple Vincent Morisset et Caroline Robert, du studio AATOAA, est reconnu internationalement pour ses œuvres narratives qui allient travail artisanal et technologies. Dans chacun de leur projet, les visiteurs sont invités à devenir participants. Ces expériences mettent en perspective notre rapport à l'autre et le regard que nous portons sur le monde qui nous entoure. L'univers étonnant de Caroline et Vincent s'incarne sous différentes formes (vidéos interactives, installations dans l'espace public, réalité virtuelle, net art). Avec Habitat, ils explorent la miniature pour la première fois. Par le passé, ils ont collaboré artistiquement avec Arcade Fire, Louise Lecavalier, Skrillex et Sigur Rós. Leurs créations ont été présentées aux festivals de Venise, Sundance, SXSW et au Japan Media Art Festival. Ils ont été récipiendaires d’un prix Emmy, d'un Grammy et de plusieurs Webbys.

Any idea of the date, considering the cars parked in the street?
Some time in the early 1950s. Someone is trimming the hedge at no 14. The fence round the Old Hall has been removed since this photo was taken. Some of the cars look as if they might be the same.
