Brief: design a logo for an Art & Design library.

This shows the development of my final owl design for the logo which I created from scratch in Illustrator. I amalgamated aspects of the European Owl and the Tawny Owl to create the owl's look. The pencil that the owl is perched on is to represent the art and design specialisation of the library.

Portrait preparation leading up to cardboard construction

For my project 'Small World' I decided to use a little box man figure. Here's one of my final shots.

Brief: design a leaflet to promote a college Art & Design department.

This is one of my preliminary sketches to work out the final design of the leaflet. The idea behind it is taken from the game, Misfits where there are different heads, bodies and legs used to make up a character. I used the three sections to represent different aspects of Art and Design: photography, fine art and fashion/textiles. I drew the images freehand using photos as references.

Coloured pencils on cartridge paper and scanned in.

For one of my projects in my AS Level Photography I had to explore Self Image and I chose to base mine on the insecurities relating to mainly body image but also showing the way particularly females feel about how they must look due to the 'media perfection models'.

This image links on from the previous image in that the media has fooled us as a generation that in order to reach this perfected model look, we must do certain things and due to the strong manipulative power the media as a whole has over the general public, they can feel like a command. I wanted to portray literally the way young girls minds work, I wanted to represent the metaphor in a literal way as in they feel that strongly that they "MUST NOT EAT" that they want to block their mouth from any temptation in order to satisfy this media image.

In my final presentation, this along with the first image have both been printed out A5 size and are positioned next to the second image which has been printed out A4 size so these shots are really supporting the theme that I intended from the piece.

Brief: create a mock entry for the Arriva Art Bus competition (design something that would completely transform a double decker bus into a piece of art, both inside and out).

I decided to take the idea literally and made it an Art Bus: a bus covered in works of art. I wanted it to have both well-known and obscure artists and paintings, and be a kind of mobile art gallery, travelling around the country and introduce the general public - non-art gallery goers - to art. The inside continued the theme of an art gallery and could be used as an exhibition space for local artists.

The design for the bus was created in Photoshop CS5 using a template supplied by Arriva. The entire bus was given a red-orange base layer with a wooden wainscoting to represent a art gallery's interior. Each window of the bus was covered with a framed painting. Finally, small details were added such as shadows and tones.

The painting on the front of the bus is Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli.

NB All paintings are used under fair use and retain any copyrights they may have.

Brief: Research 20 different art movements from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and then use the information to create a timeline of art and graphic design over that time period aimed at young people. Final outcome to consist of 4 A5 or A4 pages rather than the whole timeline.

We had recently studied David Carson and the layouts he designed so I used his style as my inspiration. As the brief featured time and history, I decided to create the timeline with a Steampunk theme.

I focused on 3 art movements, one from each century, and the front cover. The final piece was printed on a sheet of A3 and folded into quarters but as the actual file has half the image upside down, I amended it to a strip so it was easier to see it all.

NB: I didn't create the Steampunk font that's used on the front cover, it was from Digital Artist magazine and free for personal use.

My photography coursework for this year. The idea was to take 5 photos of someone in the Brighton & Hove area which would show their job or hobby. I was lucky enough to find Dave, who makes puppets.

(Research and Ideas no.2)

For this assignment I was given the title "Emptiness". I decided to go with a more serious approach, and make a provocative photo related to a serious problem that lingers in many groups of people: mental health, and its relationship with alcoholism.

For this assignment, I was told to include 2 - 3 composition techniques. The amount of light: the theme is dark, and it is evoked through the use of low light, except for the room hidden behind the door. The colors are dim and slightly blue which is a color set associated with depression and sadness.
