Resort Stripe Jon (repainted by Pamela Reasor) and Parrot Antoinette

My two latest pieces of paper manipulations with added stitch for the Open College of The Arts textiles course that I am doing.

This is my final piece of the GCSE Art Exam.

Although it's not perfect and didn't even came out the way i thought it would, i like it. It was my first time trying to paint life-like. And the biggest mistake i've made was not practising it before the exam and also not having enough coursework for the project.

My only hope is now the other piece of coursework which is worth 60% of the final grade. I've already got an 'A' in that one. Now i'll be trying to push that up to an 'A*' so that the whole grade could go somewhere like a low 'A' or something. *fingers crossed*

If you haven't already noticed, i've been trying to paint this. :)

See bigger please? just to see the details and find the insanely lot of flaws?

Day One Hundred Five

Brief: design a film poster for one of the five films showing at the film festival taking place at a local university. I chose the film Control.

This is my final draft of the poster. Created using Photoshop CS4 on Mac, using screenshots from the film. This was my first time using Photoshop, although I've used other graphics software for several years.

*NB: Logos and location information which have been removed from the bottom for security purposes.

For one of my AS Level projects, the title was "Light Graffiti" and I decided to just base this project on the technique alone and put more effort into the final presentation. This was taken on a 15" exposure and I used three LED coloured keyring lights.

It has not been retouched in any way and for my final presentation, I am going to print this out A3 size and then split the image into quite a few separated pieces, mount them on foam board and then progressively raise them further up as they go towards the middle to create a 3D styled piece.

This is a section from my A2 Textiles Coursework book displaying an evaluation piece from a scarf i made and a documentation from my visit to the Brussels Lace and Costume Museum, which I found inspirational in response to my chosen theme of Vintage: 1910-1930s evening wear.

Created this for my techniques section of my City & Guilds Level 1 Sugarcraft Course. Thought it looked quite effective and like a patchwork quilt!

These pages from my Textiles A2 Coursework book display experimentation of techniques, building up to an outcome. I used silk painting, stenciling and polystyrene printing.

self portrait in the style of artist (Alex Pringle)

My dissertation being edited. It took ages.

Anti-Smoking project. Poster concept to be distributed around colleges in Scotland (if the brief were real!).

For one of my AS Level projects, the title was "Image and Text" where we had to produce two final pieces, one of which was a commercial advert and one which raised an issue of our choice.

This was one of the images, which I used to raise awareness for the issue that is Domestic Abuse. This is intended to literally represent the violence taken place commonly in these types of relationships, and show the pain and despair the people feel when they're put through this.

For the final presentation, this image will be presented A4 size next to the other two supporting images, along with some text presented at the bottom.

Building Tomorrow’s Workforce: Industry & Community College Partnership Key To Long-term Economic Growth

Ann Arbor, MI – Strategic relationships between industry and community colleges will boost our economy over the long-term by training tomorrow’s workers for future jobs. According to “Building Tomorrow’s Workforce,” a report sponsored by Lumina Foundation for Education, many future workers will be younger documented Hispanic immigrants who often lack higher education credentials.

Regardless of the current economic woes, the workforce in 2014 will be strongly defined by two factors: the departure of large numbers of “baby boomers” and the rapid growth of the Hispanic workforce. These legal immigrants need greater postsecondary opportunities in order to fill expected gaps in industry sectors related to infrastructure and green manufacturing.

“We found examples of successful partnerships between manufacturers and community colleges that are committed to helping today’s workforce gain the supply chain skills this industry sector needs,” said Jeannine La Prad, President and CEO of the Corporation for a Skilled Workforce which led the study. “These models have implications for every business and industry that will need to consider the inevitable demographic shifts that will shape the workforce for decades to come.”

Overall, the U.S. labor force will grow from 147 million to 162 million between 2004 and 2014 entirely as a result of population growth. However, the proportion of “native” workers will remain flat over that time. As a result, without significant immigration, the national workforce would shrink substantially. Hispanics are the fastest growing segment of the population but they are also one of the least educated. If the nation is to fill the projected workforce gaps, there will have to be a concerted effort to better educate documented Hispanic immigrants.

“Predictions are that despite today’s economic situation, the U.S. will need significantly more highly educated workers too as soon as 2014,” said Sarita Brown, President of Excelencia in Education, a partner in the report. “For the proposed economic stimulus plans to have long lasting and far reaching effects, we must value all our workers and further the education and training for legal Hispanic immigrants.”

“Building Tomorrow’s Workforce” highlights six innovative partnerships between manufacturers and community colleges. Each program focuses on enrolling Hispanic immigrants with no post-secondary experience in college level coursework, on getting buy-in from employers, and on having strong commitment from a local community college. The programs are located in a variety of regions:

•Morgan Community College and Cargill Meat Solutions in Fort Morgan, Colorado

•Miami Dade College and Florida Power and Light in Miami, Florida

•Instituto del Progreso Latino (a community based organization), Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center, a campus of Wilbur Wright College, and ManufacturingWorks in Chicago, Illinois

•Shoreline Community College and Puget Sound Automobile Dealers Association, Seattle, Washington

•Central Texas Technology Center (CTTC), the workforce development training campus of Alamo Community College; Seguin Adult Education Cooperative; WorkSource Career Centers; and local industry, near San Antonio, Texas

•Cerritos Community College, One-Stop Workforce Center, and local employers, Los Angeles, California

Brief: design a logo for an Art & Design library.

This shows the development of my final owl design for the logo which I created from scratch in Illustrator. I amalgamated aspects of the European Owl and the Tawny Owl to create the owl's look. The pencil that the owl is perched on is to represent the art and design specialisation of the library.

Brief: design a leaflet to promote a college Art & Design department.

This is one of my preliminary sketches to work out the final design of the leaflet. The idea behind it is taken from the game, Misfits where there are different heads, bodies and legs used to make up a character. I used the three sections to represent different aspects of Art and Design: photography, fine art and fashion/textiles. I drew the images freehand using photos as references.

For one of my projects in my AS Level Photography I had to explore Self Image and I chose to base mine on the insecurities relating to mainly body image but also showing the way particularly females feel about how they must look due to the 'media perfection models'.

This image links on from the previous image in that the media has fooled us as a generation that in order to reach this perfected model look, we must do certain things and due to the strong manipulative power the media as a whole has over the general public, they can feel like a command. I wanted to portray literally the way young girls minds work, I wanted to represent the metaphor in a literal way as in they feel that strongly that they "MUST NOT EAT" that they want to block their mouth from any temptation in order to satisfy this media image.

In my final presentation, this along with the first image have both been printed out A5 size and are positioned next to the second image which has been printed out A4 size so these shots are really supporting the theme that I intended from the piece.

Brief: create a mock entry for the Arriva Art Bus competition (design something that would completely transform a double decker bus into a piece of art, both inside and out).

I decided to take the idea literally and made it an Art Bus: a bus covered in works of art. I wanted it to have both well-known and obscure artists and paintings, and be a kind of mobile art gallery, travelling around the country and introduce the general public - non-art gallery goers - to art. The inside continued the theme of an art gallery and could be used as an exhibition space for local artists.

The design for the bus was created in Photoshop CS5 using a template supplied by Arriva. The entire bus was given a red-orange base layer with a wooden wainscoting to represent a art gallery's interior. Each window of the bus was covered with a framed painting. Finally, small details were added such as shadows and tones.

The painting on the front of the bus is Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli.

About 20 U.S. high school students had the opportunity to learn Japanese, experience Japanese culture and earn college credit at the U.S.-Japan Summer Camp, scheduled from July 18 through July 31 on the Ohio Northern University campus in Ada.

Limited to high school freshmen through seniors, the camp was dedicated to fostering scholarship, enhancing language skills and promoting cross-cultural understanding. In addition to academic coursework, students took part in cultural dinners, discussions and field trips. ONU political science professor Robert Alexander is the director of the camp.
