On September 3, 2014, our first storytime was on counting. There were fingerplays and stories and an iPad app, 10 Little Fish by Harriet Ziefert. Karen Ellis was storyteller that day.
In contrast to hummingbirds, bushtits are socialists: they are entirely happy to 'share the wealth' at a feeder. I am always happy to encounter them. Look closely to see that most of these have dark eyes, one has yellow. The latter is a female.
They are not quite as tiny as hummingbirds but they aren't much bigger. An ounce comprises 30 grams. You would need seven Anna's hummingbirds to make up an ounce. So what is a bushtit by comparison? Well, to balance an ounce would require six birds. The hummingbird is 4.3 grams, the bushtit 5.3. Think about it: eyes, a worthy brain, a beating heart, plenty of muscle power, all of it squeezed into a 5.3-gram package.
These friendlies were one of 69 species listed in the Patricia Bay zone of the Saanich Peninsula-Saltspring Island Christmas Bird Count, December 18.

Count Dracula (a first name is never given) is a centuries-old vampire, sorcerer, and Transylvanian nobleman, who claims to be a Székely descended from Attila the Hun. He inhabits a decaying castle in the Carpathian Mountains near the Borgo Pass. Unlike the vampires of Eastern European folklore, which are portrayed as repulsive, corpse-like creatures, Dracula exudes a veneer of aristocratic charm. In his conversations with Jonathan Harker, he reveals himself as deeply proud of his boyar heritage and nostalgic for the past times, which he admits have become only a memory of heroism, honor and valor in modern times.

I know it's a horrible photo - sorry, but they were quick little buggers. One of them came right up to my feet, ran around me a couple of times, paused to sniff the air, put a wee paw on my sneaker, run around my feet one more time, and then ran back into the safety of the woods.
Adrian had a really hard job co-ordinating many of the materials and stuff the women had to provide to prove they were valid members of the parachutist's organizations from the countries, as well as having a legitimate license to fly. All of that is necessary for them to qualify to make this record-breaking jump.

The latest in our line of counting toys! Needlefelted gnomes that are not only fun to play with (firmly felted wool, tallest is 4" tall) but they help with colours, sequencing and sizes. They have a variety of skin tones and sport mushrooms to match the number on their bases~ so amounts and numerals are both taught through play.
