On Friday, February 7, 2014, high school and middle school students dashed into the icy Atlantic as part of Special Olympics Virginia’s largest fundraiser: The Polar Plunge and the Cool School Challenge.

“Raising one million dollars for the fourth year in a row is incredible,” said Rick Jeffrey, Special Olympics Virginia president. “More importantly, though, these funds will help us to build bigger, better, more inclusive communities across the state of Virginia.”

In addition to the money raised, they got to take the icy dip into the Atlantic, all while earning a Friday “pass” from school, earn community service credit, Costume contests – prizes for best dressed male and female, prizes for teacher or team sponsor, and freezing photos.

In case you didn't know, it's been pretty hot in NYC lately. The day this was taken I think the temp hit the high 90s. Don't worry, we didn't take Zucco out for long especially since he has a heart condition these days. This was his potty break and was about a block and a half away from us. We took him to a bus shelter in a shady area to give him some water to cool him off. The minute he sat on the bench, he stuck his butt out and pressed it against the cool metal/glass. Still not as good as air conditioning but it helped for a brief moment.

Crazy paint job on this TVR Tuscan 2. What do you think?

After soldering, let the component cool for a few seconds before letting it go. You might also want to trim off any sharp edges remaining; there are several here.

The schematics of a water-cooled air conditioning system as applied in many commercial buildings. The cooling tower cools the condenser so that the chiller can generate cold water with lowest possible compressor effort. Smart cooling tower design and continuous condenser tube cleaning help minimizing electricity cost. www.watco-group.co/

Waterbird challenge 2012

On the hottest day of the year so far this little drake found a cool spot. He sat on the water using the shade of the bank and overhanging bushes. He popped his head up now and again just to see what was going on.

A team of pipers were in a side street enjoying a can before they marched down the high street. I was taken by this Pipe Major's wooden framed mirror sunglasses and shot this candid portrait before talking to him and asking for a more formal portrait.

She is having a difficult time, but don't worry it's not the baby, it's other things.

We often have to fight for our own life, our dreams, our belief. Women need lots of courage, bravery and support.

Go on my sisters, I'm here to support you.

Following article is forwarded by a dear friend of mine, I do hope there is a Chinese version.

A young wife sat on a sofa on a hot humid day,

drinking iced tea and visiting with her mother. As

they talked about life, about marriage, about the

responsibilities of life and the obligations of

adulthood, the mother clinked the ice cubes in her

glass thoughtfully and turned a clear, sober glance

upon her daughter.

'Don't forget your sisters,' she advised, swirling

the tea leaves to the bottom of her glass. 'They'll

be more important as you get older. No matter how

much you love your husband, no matter how much you

love the children you may have, you are still going

to need sisters. Remember to go places with them now

and then; do things with them.'

'Remember that 'sisters' means ALL the women...

your girlfriends, your daughters, and all your other

women relatives too. 'You'll need other women. Women

always do.'

What a funny piece of advice!' the young woman

thought. Haven't I just gotten married?

Haven't I just joined the couple-world? I'm now a

married woman, for goodness sake! A grownup! Surely

my husband and the family we may start will be all I

need to make my life worthwhile!'

But she listened to her mother. She kept contact

with her sisters and made more women friends each

year. As the years tumbled by, one after another,

she gradually came to understand that her mother really

knew what she was talking about. As time and nature

work their changes and their mysteries upon a woman,

sisters are the mainstays of her life.

After more than 50 years of living in this world,

here is what I've learned:

THIS SAYS IT ALL:

Time passes.

Life happens.

Distance separates.

Children grow up.

Jobs come and go.

Love waxes and wanes.

Men don't do what they're supposed to do.

Hearts break.

Parents die.

Colleagues forget favors.

Careers end.

BUT.........

Sisters are there, no matter how much time and how

many miles are

between you. A girl friend is never farther away

than needing her can reach.

When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you

have to walk it by yourself, the women in your life

will be on the valley's rim, cheering you on,

praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on

your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the

valley's end.

Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk

beside you....Or come in and carry you out.

Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters,

daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, Mothers,

Grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins, and extended

family: all bless our life!

The world wouldn't be the same without women, and

neither would I. When we began this adventure called

womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or

sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we

would need each other.

Every day, we need each other still. Pass this on

to all the women who help make your life meaningful.

I just did. Short and very sweet:

There are more than twenty angels in this world.

Ten are peacefully sleeping on clouds. Nine are

playing. And one is reading her email at this

moment.

Send this message to ten of your friends including

me. If you get 5 replies, someone you love will

surprise you.

Happy days!

Don't break this; it's working

A cool sadhu at Pashupatinath temple, Kathmandu, during the Tij festival.

Modification of another photo of mine: exposure lowered and saturation raised to bring out the stars and their colors relative to the sky. Interesting features include:

Aldebaran, the brightest star in the 'V' shaped formation to the right, which is probably the main reason the constellation is called Taurus

Theta Tauri, two stars just a few light years apart below and to the right of Aldebaran. Except for Aldebaran, which is 60 light years away, the bright stars in the V are all around 150 ly away.

Down and to the left you can see Orion's shield. The brightest star in the shield, TYC96 or Pi3 Orionis, is just 26 ly away: the shield star just below it (called TYC92) and a little dimmer (magnitude 3.65 to the former's mag 3.18) is almost 1k300 ly away. Therefore, it is one bright mofo, and indeed if the two were switched around TYC92 would shine brighter than Venus, since its absolute magnitude is -4.32! Ironically, Pi3's absolute magnitude is actually dimmer than we see it from earth, since absolute magnitude is calculated from a distance of 32 ly and it is only 26 ly away--and if it were 32 ly away, it would be almost exactly as bright as TYC92 is now (mag 3.66)!

Finally, and the bottom of the picture lies Rigel, the brightest star in Orion, both in terms of what we see and its inherent luminosity. Did you find TYC92's numbers impressive? Rigel will blow you away: at 92 times the radius of the sun, at 0.15 magnitude from earth, and at an absolute magnitude of -6.73, Rigel is a monster. Whereas TYC92's real luminosity is 12k times that of the sun, Rigel's is 51,194 times that of the sun. The only other star in Orion that gives Rigel a run for its money is Alnilam, at -6.42 absolute magnitude and 112k times the luminosity of the sun--so it actually gives off more energy than Rigel, but more of that energy (in light) is outside of the visible spectrum, so it seems dimmer to our limited senses. So in reality, where Rigel is a monster, Alnilam is a titan, the former being only 17 times the mass of the sun while the latter is 40 times the mass of the sun, making it a blue-white supergiant that will live fast and die young with the best of them.
