During World War 2, Bovingdon was home to the B17 Flying Fortess Combat Crew Replacment Centre (11CCRC)8th Air Force. After the war it was still busy with the USAF / RAF , being involved in activities connected with the Berlin Airlift.
The airfield also featured in many feature films, including "The War Lover" , "633 Squadron" and "Hanover Street" . Today Bovingdon airfield is home to a large prison and a saturday market site.
UPDATE : DEC2015 Bovingdon was used in the Brad Pitt film "Fury" for some of the tank battle scenes . Other films that have also used Bovingdon - Harry Potter ( Hagrid motorbike scene ) , Star Wars "Force Awakens" ( desert /palm tree plane crash ? scene )

Becuna is a BALAO-class submarine built in New London, CT. During World War II, "Becky" prowled the Pacific Ocean for Japanese ships, and is credited with sinking 3.5 Japanese merchant ships. Converted in 1951 to a Guppy 1A type with sophisticated radar and torpedo equipment including nuclear warheads, she is the only Guppy 1-A submarine on display.
