The spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is a planthopper indigenous to parts of China and Vietnam. It has spread invasively to Japan, South Korea, and the United States. Its preferred host is tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), but it infests economically significant plants including soybean, grapes, stone fruits, and Malus spp.
The species was accidentally introduced into South Korea in 2006 and Japan in 2009, and has since been considered a pest. In September 2014, L. delicatula was first recorded in the United States, and as of 2022, it is an invasive species in much of Northeastern United States and is rapidly spreading south and west.[4] L. delicatula's egg masses have been found to be the primary vector of spread, with Ailanthus altissima populations seen as a risk factor for further infestation globally. Ongoing pest control efforts have sought to limit population growth, due to the threat L. delicatula poses to global agricultural industries.

Note: I have seen many immature lantern-fly in my garden, you're supposed to smash them when noticing. Not much success as they flew away as soon as you approached them, unless they were on the ground, then, you might be able to smash them at once.

E si corre troppo, si perde di vista l'essenziale.
Parlo per me, che poi ho bisogno di piu' tempo per fare, visto che i miei tempi sono piu' lunghi dovuti alla lentezza, sento che nessuno puo' rinunciare a se stesso come bene primario, e se poi si deve necessariamente tagliare qualcosa, beh che si tagli il superfluo e il di piu'.....
Ognuno di noi ha un Essenziale, un libro di cui non puo' fare a meno, e non si deve neppure inventare, esiste, è dentro di noi, quello che sfugge, a volte, è il significato di ciò che ci vuole dire....ecco allora serve un buon traduttore, e per uno come me, negato per le lingue in generale, è necessario trovarne uno piu' che buono.

Last evening the fire department had a controlled burn/training for new cadets. 19* out and Dave was gone for a good seven hours. I rode out for a few hours. One has to salute these men and women for their dedication.
And all the kids cried out, "Please stop, you're scaring me"

These juvenile Bald Eagles would patrol the beach inches from the volcanic sand looking for scraps, for such young birds, their flight control was amazing.

Winter is a lean time for me to find lots of neat nature subjects to photograph so here's a scene from work today. My co-workers who are all specially trained to fight wildfires are conducting a controlled burn in a small waterway that has a large population of reed canary grass. Reed canary grass is aggressive, invasive and non-native here in Iowa where it chokes out our valuable native grasses and sedges in settings like this. Reed canary grass has practically no value for birds and wildlife and is essentially a flora & fauna diversity desert. Reed canary grass is very difficult to control by conventional means - spraying, mowing, spring burns - but some recent research suggests that a winter burn, if possible, might really set it back some. I guess we'll see next summer.

There was tiny avalanches rolling down the side of this mountain and the rangers were doing avalanche control that day.... I managed to get some cool shots of that. Straight from the Canon 40D with some sharpness added.
