For those on dialup, here's a section of the Contrail Remnant picture. You can see what I'm talking about... tubes and rings and knots and discontinuity and just plain weird stuff.
As the sun drops, rays are cast into the hazy sky from the little fluffy clouds scurrying by and distant planes lay down crisp contrails, Yum!
Sunrise on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2012. The contrails are from jets inbound to Kennedy Airport in New York City. Each one was actually left in the same place as each jet passed by, and the trails drifted to the left in the high altitude winds. This photo was taken from Forty-Fort, PA.

I've been led to believe that this contrail is actually casting its shadow DOWN onto the cloud layer below, not UP like the perspective leads you to believe.
