Wow, my amaryllis is blooming quite nicely! The flowers are so beautiful... It was originally placed right outside in the backyard on our yard table but I had to bring it in out of the heat and direct sunlight in order to help preserve/prolong the blooms. I actually received this plant (was a bulb kit) as a holiday gift from a friend (Sandra) at our church. At this point, it had already bloomed 3 flowers, including this bloom. 2 of them have already withered away so this was its last bloom. I gotta enjoy it while it lasts, hence the pics I took, too. (Amaryllis plant as of Wednesday afternoon, August 3, 2016)
More about the amaryllis:
A popular indoor plant in the winter and spring is the amaryllis, with large lily-shaped flowers on tall stems. They are actually a popular holiday gift. As a bulb, it shares some care and growth methods used with other bulbs. However, because of its background as a tropical plant, and bloom cycle, there are differences. The bulb is NOT winter hardy. The amaryllis is for indoor blooms on a yearly cycle. With proper care, the bulb will flower again each year. Once blossoms open, keeping the plant in a cool, shaded room (65 F) will prolong the life of the bloom. A blooming amaryllis does not need to sit in a bright room or sunlight. In fact, heat & light causes the bloom(s) to wither. Blooms may last several days to a week.
