52 weeks::week 45
i hope everyone had a nice holiday. mine was quite good, thank you. chris & i went out to livingston, new jersey, to celebrate with heather & chad and heather's family. it was a lot of fun. i made my mom's pumpkin cake, which turned out to be a huge success. hardly anyone had ever heard of such a thing and all seemed to agree that it was quite tasty. we hung out, caught up, spent the night, had brunch the next day, went for a lovely walk, took some jump shots and saw quantum of solace. all in all, a great half of the long weekend. today, chris and i slept in (okay - i slept in), took our time getting ready this morning, went to soho for a tiny bit of shopping, had lunch, went grocery shopping and are now enjoying our saturday evening at home. and still one more day of the weekend! wheeee!

The experience of watching the sunset was quite dramatic, although not quite as much as this HDR version of the original.
Yesterday's nest challenge may have been more interesting than previously thought. Same male (left, wings outstretched), but definitely a different female this morning. Looks like his original mate lost a battle and was replaced by a new female with different markings and a broken wing feather that flops when she flies. Funny, because for the first two days the male had trouble attracting females to his new nest.
Yet another female challenged the nest this morning, but the birds never came to blows, and she flew off after circling closely for a few moments.

Continuing on our southern tour.. three nights at Hastings, we arrived in the evening for first night so only had a brief walk around the town. The next day we went out as far as the channel tunnel/Folkestone, (so we would know where to go the next morning on our day trip to France). So we came back to Hastings via the coast roads passing through Hythe, Dymchurch, Lydd, Dungerness, Camber & Rye. Some nice motorcycle roads there!! I've posted some pictures from Camber, Dungerness next then the ones from France! Or I might post the French ones first.. Who knows!
Another longer walk round Hastings before bed and then up early to catch our channel tunnel train..

Continuing the theme of re-use of buildings, these Victorian house had become a warehouse for used car parts when I first become acquainted with them. Now, despite the blight that persists further along the strip, they have come back into use as a medical centre and specialist sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia clinic.

The continued occurrence of foodborne illness is not evidence of the failure of our food safety system. In fact, many of our prevention and control efforts have been to a reasonable extent, effective. Despite great strides in the area of microbiological food safety, much remains to be done.
Foodborne illness is not a simple problem in need of a quick fix solution; it is a complex combination of factors that must be managed on a continual basis. Changing life-styles and population demographics, global food trade to provide a year-round supply of fruits and vegetables, and novel foods are a few examples of potential increased food safety risks. No matter how sophisticated and complex a system is developed, food safety management is never finished or complete, because change is constant.
With the increasing need for risk based scientific advice to better manage microbiological food safety issues, the Food and agriculture organization (FAO) and World Health organization (WHO) led Codex Alimentarius Commission has been promoting Microbiological Risk Assessments - a tool to inform actions and decisions aimed at improving food safety.
As microbiological food safety issues are brought to the attention of risk managers, there needs to be a systematic preliminary process that brings particular issues into focus and guides further action.
Using microbiological risk assessment as a tool in food safety risk management is an area that is still developing. For MRA to become a truly useful decision-support tool there is a need for risk managers to understand when and how it can be used.
It is against this background that, FAO and ILSI-SA are organizing a hands-on Workshop on MRA for government stakeholders from Southern African countries. The MRA Workshop will equip Risk Managers with knowledge and understanding of practical MRA in order to:
•Identify and prioritize food safety risks to populations in respective countries
•Commission MRA's in their countries or in regions to obtain scientific information on defined food safety risks to populations in that country or region
•Utilise this modern risk-based approach in developing science-based food safety regulations.
•Enhance the level and knowledge of food safety in the region.
•Create an opportunity for regional harmonization of food safety regulations to enhance regional and international trade.
The workshop is being funded by ILSI and the African Solidarity Trust Fund (ASTF). The fund is a unique Africa-led initiative aimed at improving agriculture and food security across the continent.

This is the last year I'll be at the CNE for a while - I'll be out of the country for next year's and things after that are still undecided. I've been taking a photo of the city from the CNE ferris wheel for a number of years. I can't find all of the photos anymore (I'm certain I have more) but I'll add a comment below with a few of them. They moved the ferris wheel this year so the angles aren't all the same, and all the images below from before 2007 where scanned from prints so the quality varies!
