CEA Project Logistics were contracted for the transportation, assembly and installation of a metal press for a Metal Stamping and Assembly Factory in Rayong province, Thailand.

CEA received a combination of containerized and flat rack OOG cargo to their Cargo Consolidation Facility in Laem Chabang. Each container was unloaded and unstuffed. Several sections of the main bed and tie-rod uprights were assembled by CEA before transportation.

Upon arrival at the factory, the remaining press parts and sections were unloaded and assembled. As several sections were of considerable size and weight CEA erected a temporary gantry crane to assist in installation. The crane was placed over a pre-constructed pit which would house the completed press. The press bed section was lifted and placed into position and aligned on the pit floor.

Other sections were carefully lifted and moved into place with the crown section being installed last. Tie rods and bolts were tightened to complete the assembly of the major sections. The gantry crane was removed to allow a small mobile crane and Elevated Work Platform to install the smaller parts. Upon the project completion, both CEA and the client were very happy with the efficiency and expertise of the installation.

The Thames Barrier is the world's second largest movable flood barrier (after the Oosterscheldekering in the Netherlands) and is located downstream of central London. Its purpose is to prevent London from being flooded by exceptionally high tides and storm surges moving up from the sea. It only needs to be raised during high tide; at ebb tide it can be lowered to release the water that backs up behind it. Its northern bank is in Silvertown in the London Borough of Newham and its southern bank is in the New Charlton area of Charlton in the London Borough of Greenwich.

London is quite vulnerable to flooding. A storm surge generated by low pressure in the Atlantic Ocean sometimes tracks eastwards past the north of Scotland and may then be driven into the shallow waters of the North Sea. The surge tide is funnelled down the North Sea which narrows towards the English Channel and the Thames Estuary. If the storm surge coincides with a spring tide, dangerously high water levels can occur in the Thames Estuary. This situation combined with downstream flows in the Thames provides the triggers for flood defence operations.

The threat has increased over time due to the slow but continuous rise in high water level over the centuries (20 cm / 100 years) and the slow "tilting" of Britain (up in the north and west, and down in the south and east) caused by post-glacial rebound.

Fourteen people died in the 1928 Thames flood, and after 307 people died in the UK in the North Sea Flood of 1953 the issue gained new prominence.

Early proposals for a flood control system were stymied by the need for a large opening in the barrier to allow for vessels from London Docks to pass through. When containerization came in and a new port was opened at Tilbury, a smaller barrier became feasible with each of the four main navigation spans being the same width as the opening of Tower Bridge.

disclaimer for all my architectural buddies, this is a quick crumby sketch, under an hours scheming... relax

A solar-powered, containerized film center would provide enormous long-term benefits to communities in developing countries, who live outside the catchment of modern infrastructure.

Film is an approachable medium that dissolves language barriers. This mobile facility will initially provide crucial education opportunities: agricultural skills, AIDS prevention and family planning information. People will congregate from miles around to learn how to improve sustainability and make efficient use of local and regional resources

Far from being a monologue from the developed world, the facility will enable communities to collaborate and participate on the international political stage through solar-powered satellite internet; visual footage is one of the most powerful tools in promoting disadvantaged causes. Further, the center will provide an excellent ruggedized command station, which, in the event of an emergency, will facilitate communication and enable follow-up aid efforts.

Impact:

Reach - every center has the ability to attract and inspire thousands of people.

Depth - access to this kind of facility has profound long-term positive effect on any community.

Attainability - the technology exists today to produce these facilities immediately.

Efficiency - recycled containers are no longer used due to global recession, and inexpensive consumer hardware could be utilized throughout.

Longevity - it would be reasonable to expect an installation to operate for over a decade without extra investment, one of the primary benefits of solar power.

So if that sounds inspirational, dont forget to vote!

in the mean time, leave a comment.

Docklands Drive near Wharf Street, at Waterfront City tram terminal, Melbourne.

The building at left is a hotel, "Four Points by Sheraton."

The Victoria Dock area was developed as part of the Port of Melbourne from the 1880s, and became the busiest part of the Port by the 1920s. However, containerization led to a gradual decline of the Victoria Dock and surrounding areas. The old docks could not accommodate container ships, and this led to development of new facilities downstream (closer to the mouth of the river Yarra). Redevelopment was planned from the late 1980s but a series of delays stalled implementation. Construction of the current Marvel Stadium during the late 1990s stimulated interest among investors, and several large-scale development projects were in progress during the early 2000s.
