Audacia is Allseas’ [a Swiss-based offshore contractor specializing in pipelay, heavy lift and subsea construction] versatile pipelay vessel, optimized for the execution of small- to large-diameter pipeline projects of any length in all water depths, and for associated work such as the installation of risers and subsea protection frames. SF Bay RR, 21 June 2018
The San Francisco Bay RR operates on the southeast side of San Francisco on and near the port. It uses two Alco S2 switchers that were built for the State Belt RR, later the San Francisco Belt RR, the line that served the piers of the Port of San Francisco for many years.
As shipping companies moved to containerization, the Port of Oakland became the big northern California container terminal and most of the piers of the Port of San Francisco were abandoned or converted to uses other than marine freight, so the SF Belt RR found itself out of a job. After 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the Embarcadero Freeway, which had run over the SF Belt for most of its length, the freeway was removed, opening up San Francisco's waterfront and much of the Belt's trackage as converted for use by the Muni F line, which runs historic streetcars to Fishermen's Wharf, and the Muni lines that now server the Caltrain station.
Meanwhile, Pier 96, near Hunter's Point was converted to a container facility and the railroad's operations survived there. The line was renamed the San Francisco Bay RR and continued to use Alco S2s 23 and 25 to switch its customers.
Today, the railroad's main business is transloading dirty dirt from constructions and clean up sites in the Bay Area from trucks to railcars. It is owned by Waste Solutions Group, which also owns a fleet of hopper cars. The SF Bay and UP interchange on an as needed basis, with UP's South City job running into the SF Bay's yard on Cargo Way with empties and taking away loads.
A couple of railfans, Ryan and Ben, work for the railroad and Ryan invited me to come by for a visit. I had stopped by one afternoon a couple of years ago, and lucked out to see an S2 running around the yard a bit, but the railrroad usually goes on duty betweeen 4 and 5 am, switches cars for a few hours and then is done for the day. So, a visit to the SF Bay from Sacramento entailed a night in a hotel. It took a few tries for me to get time off from work scheduled on the same day the railroad was running.
Eventually, it all lined up and my alarm went off at 0315 at a hotel in Daly City, just south of the SF city limit.
I was at the yard by 4 and met Ben, who went out and started Alco 23. 25 is out of service with a bad bearing on the radiator fan drive shaft. Ryan explained that the SF Belt had done a jerry rigged repair of the shaft at some point and it was never documented, so nobody knew about the bearing until it failed. As a new low emission unit will be delivered in the next few months, there is no reason to repair 25. 25 will be put on display somewhere, perhaps near the Ferry Building, while 23 will be held as backup for the new unit.
But for now, an S2 built in 1944 is doing the job it was built to do. If you think about it, that is as though the Virginia and Truckee had still been using the Reno and Genoa during WW2.
Shorty after I got there, Ben went out and fired up the 23. It has a block heater, so it started easily with a puff of white smoke. He did an inspection of the engine, including checking the journal boxes. We then went back into the office and waited for Ryan, brakeman Johnny, and engineer Nick to arrive. The crew plotted their switching moves for the day. Ryan, who is yard operations manager, suggested that I get some blue hour photos from the ground as empties were switched and then we rode 23 while they switched loads.
Each car has dirt from one particular construction site and the dirt from sites cannot be mixed as different sites will have different contamination. UP ships it to a dump site in Nevada, where it is processed. Ryan explained that sometimes they can use dividers in a car to separate dirt from different projects if there is not that much.
Right now transshipping dirty dirt is the SF Bay's only business, but there a couple of other industries are interested in bringing new business. The line that crosses the Illinois St. bridge has been out of service for a couple of years as there currently no customers north of Islais Creek.
We rode the S2 for a while after the day brightened, then got down and Ryan drove me around in a company car to get some more angles as they switched. He then had other work to do and I shot the end of 23's work day as well as 25, some spare Alco parts and another project of Waste Solutions, goats that are leased out for natural weed control. Ryan said that since Waste Solutions got more cars, they can't use their goats as much for weed control in the yard as most of the yard tracks are occupied.
The crew called it a day for switching about 0800 and then would be doing other work in the yard for the rest of their work day.

Hutchinson Island is a river island in the Savannah River, north of downtown Savannah in Chatham County, Georgia, United States. The island is formed where the Back River breaks off to the north from the Savannah River. Historically, Hutchinson Island's land use has been primarily industrial, much of which supported the Port of Savannah, one of the busiest containerization cargo ports in the world. The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT), Florida’s largest container port, achieved record volumes in containers, vehicles and overall tonnage during the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2019.
JAXPORT moved more than 1.338 million twenty-foot equivalent units (or TEUs, the industry standard for measuring containers), a 5 percent increase over 2018, which was also a record year in container volumes for the port. JAXPORT has set container volume records for four consecutive years.
The port also moved the most vehicles in its history, nearly 696,500 total units, maintaining its position as one of the nation’s busiest vehicle handling ports. Strong auto sales in the Southeast U.S., combined with growing global demand for previously owned vehicles, contributed to the growth.
The growth in general cargo volumes fueled yet another record for the port: 10.9 million tons of total cargo moved through JAXPORT last year, up 4 percent over 2018.
Major announcements in fiscal year 2019:
· The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) awarded JAXPORT an additional $35.3 million for the Jacksonville Harbor Deepening project. With continued funding, Harbor deepening remains on track to be completed in 2023, two years ahead of schedule.
· Terminal operator SSA Atlantic is set to break ground on a state-of-the-art international container terminal at JAXPORT’s Blount Island terminal. Upon completion of the deepening project, the facility will offer a newly widened vessel turning basin and deepwater access of 47 feet.
· Port processor AMPORTS added 22.4 new acres of property for auto processing and storage space at JAXPORT’s Dames Point terminal, with plans to develop an additional 40-45 acres by 2023
2019 was also a strong year for JAXPORT’s cruise business, with nearly 195,000 passengers setting sail, just shy of the previous year’s cruise passenger record of 199,000 passengers.
More highlights:
Dry bulk cargoes (which include non-containerized commodities such as limestone and gravel) increased 19 percent over 2018, with nearly 880,000 tons shipped.
Breakbulk cargoes, including wood pulp, increased 7 percent with 934,600 tons moved.
Liquid bulk cargoes, including molasses and corn syrup, are up 4 percent with nearly 380,300 tons moved.
JAXPORT has recorded year-over-year cargo revenue growth for more than a decade.

Pacific Quay is an area south of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland. It is located at the former Plantation Quay and Princes' Dock Basin. The Princes' Dock Basin was the largest on the River Clyde when it was opened by the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1900. It ceased to be used as a commercial dock by the Clyde Port Authority in the 1970s as the volume of Shipping using the Upper Clyde declined with the onset of Containerization. The site was later used for the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988. Their program is known internationally as a world leader in development of populations of trees with genetic resistance to non-native diseases.
The public is invited to the 50th celebration on Thursday, August 25 at the Cottage Grove-based center located 34963 Shoreview Road. The Open House and public tours are scheduled from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tours of the center will include:

History:
In the late 19th century, the Yokohama city government worked on constructing new harbour facilities, and the first reclamation work was begun in 1899. The work, completed in 1905, was followed by expansion work which ended a year later. Planned by a Japanese architect and a government official, Yorinaka Tsumaki, the current Building No. 2 was constructed in 1911, and the current Building No. 1 was erected in 1913. Both were to be used as customs houses.
When the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake struck Yokohama, the red brick buildings were damaged, but suffered less than other buildings due to their reinforced structure with iron implanted between the bricks. Repair work continued until 1930, and after World War II, the buildings were requisitioned by the American occupation troops between 1945 and 1956. After the buildings were returned to Japan, their use decreased with the advent of containerization, and the buildings ended their role as customs houses in 1989.
In 1992, Yokohama city acquired jurisdiction over the buildings, and restoration work was carried out from 1994 to 1999. This work, in which the roof and structure of the buildings were strengthened, was conducted by Takenaka Corporation, a Japanese architectural company. After the inside of the buildings was renovated, they were opened as the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse on April 12, 2002.

The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT), Florida’s No. 1 container port by volume, announced the addition of two experienced containerized cargo professionals to the port’s commercial team.
Joyssy Arias joins JAXPORT as Director of Ocean Carrier Development. In this role, Arias is responsible for developing JAXPORT’s ocean carrier service in the container trade, with a primary focus on building and maintaining the port’s relationships with global ocean carriers.
Arias has nearly two decades of experience with some of the world’s leading ocean carriers, most recently serving as Senior Manager of Trans-Pacific Trade for Hapag-Lloyd. During her career, she has held logistics management roles based in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and South America, serving nearly all major international trade lanes and developing new routings and products. Arias is experienced in perishable cargo and vessel capacity management from her former roles at A.P. Moller Maersk and global freight forwarder ECU Worldwide. She speaks Spanish and Portuguese.
Sheila Cox joins JAXPORT as Director of National Container Accounts. In this role, she works to develop new and existing container cargo business with shippers and beneficial cargo owners throughout the United States.

Suds
SUDS, or Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems are a sequence of water management practices and facilities designed to drain surface water in a manner that will provide a more sustainable approach than what has been the conventional practice of routing run-off through a pipe to a watercourse.
National standards will come into force in 2011 to ensure that new developments and redevelopments include sustainable drainage that reduces flood damage and improves water quality.
Sustainable use of land and natural resources is as imperative for biological diversity in the natural world as it is for human welfare.
Urban drainage is moving away from the conventional thinking of designing for flooding to balancing the impact of urban drainage on flood control, quality management and amenity.
Planting in and around the SUDS system
Most common aquatics are rampant native species, but they can be grown in such a way to prevent them taking over. If they are containerized in aquatic permanent planting beds. The Lincoln common SUDS system will have permanent marginal planting beds edging the system made of brick or walling stones. The structure will be out of view under the water line.
A mixed aquatic planting scheme will help in the establishment of a biological balance that contributes to clear water and provides a home for the myriad beneficial submerged organisms on which a natural food chain or eco-system depends. This scheme will include species from the following groups:
•Submerged plants – (Oxygenators) good for suppressing algae and provides a living filtration system.( Myriophyllum aquaticum) or Diamond milfoil, no harm in letting this sprawl, but essential to thin in autumn.
•Floating plants– Useful in establishment of a newly constructed sytem. The floaters help contribute to clear water. (Stratiotes hydrocharitaceae) a hardy species with sword like leaves
•Deep Water plants – Grown not only for their flowers but also the valuable shade that is cast by their leaves in summer, which help keep water clear. (Aponogeton distachyos) Water hawthorn
•Marginals –Fringe of the water garden is home to the marginals, they play a vital part in the aesthetic impact of the pool. (carex elata ‘Aurea’) Bowles’ golden sedge.
For initial planting for a good establishment it is advised to transfer plants from the Victorian Pond which are used to the local conditions. After establishment a wider variety of species can be introduced.
The first couple of weeks of establishing the SUDS system, the water will appear cloudy. This is normal and the only option is patience, wait for the oxygenators to do their job. This should take 3-4 weeks.

This heavy equipment has been containerized by Big Iron's own resources. This was a "live load" as the truck waited for us to finish loading the container.

Lots and lots of freight goes in and out of Aqaba, Jordan's only port. This depot is just north of the city, and apparently equipped with everything a trucker could need.
If I've got the geotag right (not guaranteed, but I think so), there is an airstrip here, so this is probably both a land and an air transshipment point where containerized shipping into Aqaba can be broken up and routed to its proper destination, and vice versa.

Pacific Quay is an area south of the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland. It is located at the former Plantation Quay and Princes' Dock Basin. The Princes' Dock Basin was the largest on the River Clyde when it was opened by the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1900. We ship vehicles by two methods Containerization and Roro otherwise known as roll on roll off. Cargo that cannot fit into a container must be shipped by RORO which is the cheapest way to ship vehicles, cars, trucks, autos and boats as containers have to be packed and transported to the terminal and may take up more space than necessary. Cars, SUV’S, Trucks, Wheeled equipment and all other auto’s are strapped down and loaded below deck into the hull of the ship that is completely weather proof. No exposure to the elements or salty air / water. For the Container Shipping method we provide 20" and 40" containers which have to be retro fitted with webbing and straps to keep the vehicles in place while shipping. I have three of these enormous concrete urns. They were formerly positioned atop my next door neighbor's five foot high retaining wall. She or her husband were never green thumbs, over the years the only thing that grew out of the urns were weeds. The neoclassical design didn't mesh with modern landscaping she'd done, she was going to have them taken away. Large pots are fairly expensive, so I told her I'd figure out how to get them down from the wall, if I could have them. They each weigh a couple hundred pounds. My oldest was eleven or twelve at the time, he and I used an ingenious system of ramps with old wood to alternately slide and lever them down into our yard. The only way they could be moved on the ground was by rolling them on their sides.
They've been sitting empty in my backyard ever since.
One summer, we traveled during a terrifically scorching hot month of August in Seattle. When we got home, we found most of our longtime containerized plants desiccated and keeled over (including a twenty year old filbert). It was awful.
