Part of the larger "Manhattan" series, this image starts an inner sequence of Times Square imagery. There are 10 of them.

Times Square is unequivocal humanity. It is full on, excessive, dramatic, dangerous at times, fascinating, brash, abrasive, beautiful, mind-boggling, outrageously overcrowded and if anything could be said to represent America, it just might be this almost unbelievable intersection of New York streets and peoples from every corner of the world.

I went for full-out colour on this one, to kick off the "Times Square Sequence". The riot of colour seems to reflect the virtual cacophony of visual, psychological, ethnic, situational and physical elements all jostling like excited electrons in this cauldron of humanity.

The power, future-tech machinery of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's 1973 monsterpiece and it's shocking, huckster come-on seems to be just the ticket to launch the Times Square Sequence.

Vector, abstract.

This Ralph Lauren window on 5th Avenue in New York really hit me hard from two very different directions when I saw it. Is it an ironic or even shallow exploitation of the colour of another age, used solely for "exoticism"? ... A sure-fire sign that the potency and message of that time is definitively dead. If so, then this becomes merely facile and superficial entertainment of the worst possible kind.

Or ...

Is there some kind of inner call that harkens back to a time when youth were questioning everything and becoming heavily politicized, something stirring within the culture that wonders if it might be good for this to happen again in some form. Do the creators of this window dressing feel that it might be somehow beneficial for youth to start asking some serious questions now?

Music Link: "The Flesh Failures / Let the Sunshine In". Performed by the original Broadway cast of "Hair". Thought of as silly and retro for a few decades and in many ways it IS a period piece, but somehow, the Rado/Ragni/McDermott musical just won't go away. Not completely.

The song is the stirring finish to the story of Claude Bukowski and the Tribe as they sing about the end of innocence and freedom with a call in the coming dark, for light. This song in particular, of the entire musical, bears an increasingly potent relevance as the years go by.

A sculpture/ assemblage that took a long time to get right. It is made from vintage Cuisenaire rods (used to teach Maths). The difficulty I discovered is that each extra piece you add changes the composition so you essentially have a sculptural problem as soon as you have about three or four rods. You have to balance the composition and the colours. As you go though, you obliterate most of your earlier work by fixing new rods over the others. As you add more the scale of the rods relative to the whole size of the piece changes so that adds another problem to contend with. On top of that, the whole piece wants to tip over (because I wanted the dynamism of the piece intersecting the floor plane at an angle) so the centre of gravity defines the shape also to some extent. Anyway, a strangely difficult piece (but you wouldn’t think it to look at it). About 400mm tip to base.

Varvara Stepanova (1894 – 1958) was a Russian artist. With her husband Alexander Rodchenko, she was associated with the Constructivist branch of the Russian avant-garde, which rejected aesthetic values in favour of revolutionary ones. Her activities extended into propaganda, poetry, stage scenery and textile designs.

A shot of a window on Fifth Avenue in New York breaking up the picture plane into various ambiguities of place and time. Fragments of images in reflections in the window and from behind the glass merge into a new synthetic hybrid while calling into question the verity of the single view. Fragments of Fifth and fragments of views. Simultaneity of plurality.

Music Link: "New York Counterpoint", Steve Reich. Clarinet by Peter Szucs. Along with Terry Riley, La Monte Young and Philip Glass, Steve Reich is one of the great founding figures of American Minimalism, as it came to be named. While the music of each of these great figures all differs, some to a significant degree, all share a common beginning in the questioning of the musical status quo of their early years.

Serial or 12 tone music was considered, like Modernism in the visual arts, to be the "end" of music. According to the academic strictures of the day, music had finally reached it's ultimate expression in this highly mathematical form. Reich, and his contemporaries, all students at the time, more or less, rebelled against the received tradition, finding such music, in Philip Glass's words, "didactic and ugly".

Each of them looked eastward and found inspiration and the answers they sought in both Indian and West African music. There they found a way to bring back tonality to music while jettisoning the usual Western notions of harmony and rhthym for repeated and permutating rhythmic cycles. Thus "minimalism" was born.

"New York Counterpoint" is a typical Reich piece with its beautiful expression of his matured technique pared with an early method of having an soloist ( clarinet in this case ) playing over a pre-recorded score. The soloist weaves in and out of the score both improvisationally and in strict accordance to the music as it is set down. This bears some similarity to Classical North Indian Music in that the soloist demonstrates their skill at improvisation while staying carefully within the parameters set out by the Raga.

I chose Reich's piece as another work of a New York artist to accompany my imagery and for its permutating sequence of shifting patterns, something I see in what I've done in "tumbling" this Fifth Avenue window.

A wonderful video interpolating Szucs' performance of the piece along with some really fantastic still shots of New York over 100 years.
