Industrial definitive patterns from geometric forms and crisply defined objective clarity in constructivism.

The spacial patterning of this image occupies the surface of your computer screen.

It's illusionistic effect is such that your eye is drawn deeper past the 2D plane.

In the early phase of his career Paul Strand was masterful at this compositional skill.

Art.... A scientist, though, might recognise this as the cubic lattice of crystals like common salt. Constructivist art and sculpture drew on such mathematical forms for its abstractions and creations.

Vladimir Tatlin was a Russian artist and architect. After the 1917 Revolution, V.I.Lenin tasked him with replacing Tsarist monuments with ones expressing revolutionary ideals.

Tatlin’s proposed tower was an abstract iron and glass sculpture 400m tall (Eiffel tower is 300m). The tower's axis tilted parallel to that of Earth's.

The monument was to be the headquarters of the Comintern, the international grouping of Communist parties. A lower glass cube housing the Legislature would revolve once a year. Above that was the Executive in a pyramid rotating once a month. Above that, a cylinder would hold press and communications and revolve daily. The entire edifice was to straddle the Neva in Petrograd (St Petersburg).

One prescient feature was the surrounding double helix – Tatlin’s radial struts could almost represent its canonical amino acid bases! Had the existence and structure of DNA – the key to life – been known to Tatlin it would have been of immense symbolic importance.

Tatlin’s constructivist monument in one sense harks back to the 1890s of Eiffel’s France. In another it looks far forward to the twisted and otherwise non-rectilinear steel and glass postures of almost any present-day city finance quarters.

Tatlin’s Tower was never realised although he and students made a 4.2m high mostly wooden model in 1920.

The model pictured here is 1/42 scale and was erected in 2011 at the London Royal Academy. It was subsequently moved to the UEA Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich. The Sainsbury Centre is in the foreground at right.

The former convent of San Pablo, built in the beautiful setting of Hoz del Huécar, is home to the Parador de Cuenca, one of the most special places in the city, next to the San Pablo Bridge and opposite the Hanging Houses.

Inside, you will be surprised by the decorative fusion between tradition and contemporaneity, and its unique spaces, such as the old glass cloister, the cafeteria, located in what was the convent chapel, and the beautiful outdoor pool, with a spectacular panoramic view of the city.

The Parador de Cuenca stands on the Convent of San Pablo, a monastery built by the canon Juan del Pozo in 1523 in the late Gothic Plateresque style and closely linked to the iconic San Pablo Bridge, which also bears the name of the canon.

Today, the cloister houses a masterpiece by the artist Julián Casado, entitled “Malevich Series. Variations on the same structure”. This piece, made up of 42 canvases painted between 1978 and 1982, reflects on the postulates of the Ukrainian artist Kazimir Malevich, father of constructivism, creating variations in the incidence of light on a geometric body.

Abstract composition.

Some kind of surreal, abstract image I made on the laptop.

Out of the blue a black and white abstract composition!

Surreal something.

Vector intended for painting which may or may not ever happen.

I've always been fascinated with the Citibank building in Midtown. Such a huge and distinctive building sitting on top of architectural "stilts" is a feat of incredible engineering. It's hard to imagine the inconceivable weight of the tower sitting, very strategically, on what seems like proportionally small supports. This view is off 54th Street, behind the main facade of the tower.

After "tumbling" the image, those supports are not very distinct from the rest of the cascading volumes. Because of all the varying shapes, shadows, lit planes and volumes, I thought this location could use a good "tumbling" as an image.

With the preceding Times Square imagery being so complex and busy in terms of minute detailing ( lots of people and lots of fragmented planes ) I wanted the next image in the "Manhattan" series to be simpler, softer and more 'sculptural'. A softer less 'exciting' palette was called for too, I think. Some calm after the storm.

Music Link: "New Gods" - Jon Hassell, from his album "Maarifa Street". A wonderful piece in itself, with a broad audio picture, "New Gods" is a re-visiting of an older piece that Hassell did with Bluescreen, a techno/funk/jazz band, called "The Gods Must Be Crazy". That title, to follow the tread through the associative maze, is from the famous older film of the same title. The gentle loping pace of "New Gods" seemed to fit the mood I was seeking with this image ..... Laid back, big city cool, with just a whisper of the mystical.

The former Van Nelle Factory (Dutch: Van Nellefabriek) on the Schie river in Rotterdam, is an important historic industrial building in the world.

The buildings were designed by architect Leendert van der Vlugt from the Brinkman & Van der Vlugt office in cooperation with civil engineer J.G. Wiebenga, at that time a specialist for constructions in reinforced concrete, and built between 1925 and 1931. It is an example of Nieuwe Bouwen, modern architecture in the Netherlands.

In the 20th century it was a factory, processing coffee, tea and tobacco and later on additional chewing gum, cigarettes, instant pudding and rice. Currently it houses a wide variety of new media and design companies and is known as the Van Nelle Design Factory ("Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek" in Dutch). Some of the areas are used for meetings, conventions and events.

The Van Nelle Factory shows the influence of Russian constructivism.

The Van Nelle Factory is a Dutch national monument (Rijksmonument) and in June 2014 it was added to the Unesco list of world heritage sites.

"Montage" - noun (French)

assemblage, assemblée, réunion, association

The idea of photo montage was extremely important to two streams of early 20th century photography. Both movements were a break from the Pictorialist past of artistic photography, and this revolution in photo art was predicated on conceptualism. These movements were Constructivism (mainly in the Soviet Union) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constructivism_(art), and Dada (France and Germany). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dada

Above all it is art that confronts the viewer philosophically, so that the photo montage is not only assembling elements within the photo, but linking thoughts that are often un-thought.

Surreal type illustration of nothing in particular.

I found this in folder named large files finish later. Started a couple years ago.

The first building of the telephone station appeared on the Zubovskaya Square back in the 1930, and it was quite small at that time. Then a larger seven-story building overlooking the Garden Ring was built upon the project by Kasyan Solomonov in 1939.

The array of pylons in the center of the façade helps the building to “hold together” the square and makes it look like anything but a telephone station because there is a fair amount of windows in between the triangular pylons, which, again, exist since the 1930’s.

More about the project:

Stopped Short or..... Didn't beat this one into the ground.

This one a happened fast.

Another from this line of thinking...

A typical Midtown street in Manhattan with its fire escaped apartment buildings. 53rd Street transformed and abstracted to lovingly bring out its structural magnificence amongst the forest of attendant minutiae.

I could spend a year taking photographs in New York and never get to the bottom of it.

Music Link: "Mombassa" - Jon Hassell, from his album "City: Works of Fiction". Another of Hassell's "City" images to wed with mine. Hassell often expresses himself using visual art terminology and thinking. And he's very well versed in them. He hears shape, form, colour and light and his music paints visually rich and elegantly formed structures. When he trained under Indian Classical singer, Pandit Pran Nath, he learned to form "shapes in the air" using Indian Raga forms. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find him to be a highly developed synaesthete.
