florey building, oxford, england 1966-1971
architect: james stirling, 1926-1992.
after the rain.
apologies for the forced perspective of this autostitch, but this is how close to the florey you come as you walk along the isis.
the fence suggests that stirling's ambition to make the courtyard an open, semi-private space has failed. is that because of crime rates in oxford, is it to keep out rampant architecture students, or is it rather an expression of the hostility of the owners to their own building, famously unable to keep out rain, wind, noise, cold?
the stirling set so far.
Varvara Stepanova (1894 – 1958) was a Russian artist. With her husband Alexander Rodchenko, she was associated with the Constructivist branch of the Russian avant-garde, which rejected aesthetic values in favour of revolutionary ones. Her activities extended into propaganda, poetry, stage scenery and textile designs.
I created this poster as an birthday gift for Kriesse. I ended up producing a small print run for friends and allies.
A huge thank you to Sarah, for letting me use her lovely self-portrait for the artwork. The quote is from Ersichtlichkeiten. Internationale visuelle Texte der 90er, which i like a lot. See a bigger version here.

The Netherlands has a cultural influence that is way out of proportion to its size. (It's been a hot-bed of new concepts in graphic design since the 1900's.) Constructivism in the Netherlands has long interested me as well as Dutch typography and printing.

The sleeping rooms in the ground floor of the Melnikov House (Дом Мельникова), by Konstantin Melnikov (1929).
The ones in the left and in the centre were the rooms for the children (with triangles of different colours on the ceiling, both with a genuin avant-garde taste), while the one on the right is just a little part of the room for Melnikov himself and his wife. The point of view of this photo is highlighted in yellow on the plant posted in the first comment.

Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvar in Hungarian) belonged to Hungary in the past, and to this day it retains a large ethnic Hungarian community. Its cultural needs are served by the Hungarian theater housed in this early XX century Constructivist-style building.
