It has been 1,067 days since Russia invaded Ukraine – the war continues – normality does not settle in – yet life goes on amidst the war, its consequences, and its losses.
In this presentation titled ”Political and Economic Consequences of Demographic Change in Emerging Markets” on June 25, 2015, two experts – Albert Park of HKUST and Jack Goldstone of George Mason University - examined the political and economic ramifications of the population challenges facing emerging markets in this presentation which is part of the HKUST IEMS – EY Hong Kong Emerging Market Insights Series.

"Red triangles marked “political prisoners (Schutzhäftlinge – Sch.), in other words, those who were imprisoned on the basis of a “protective custody order” (Schutzhaftbefehl) issued by a state police post. The political prisoners in Auschwitz were, above all, Poles.
Green triangles marked “criminal” prisoners (Berufsverbrecher - BV), imprisoned as a direct consequence of committing a forbidden act, or after release from prison in cases where the criminal police regarded the sentence imposed by the court as too lenient. Prisoners in this category were mostly Germans.
Black triangles marked “asocial” prisoners (Asoziale - Aso), imprisoned in theory for vagrancy or prostitution, but in fact for a wide range of other deeds or behaviors, loosely and arbitrarily interpreted by the police. The Roma in the Birkenau “Gypsy camp” were classified as asocial.
Purple triangles marked prisoners imprisoned for belonging to the Jehovah’s Witnesses (Internationale Bibelforscher-Vereinigung - IBV), regarded as enemies of the state because of their pacifistic beliefs.
Pink triangles marked homosexual prisoners, in practice exclusively German, who were imprisoned on the basis of §175 of the German criminal code."
German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940–1945)
"Auschwitz concentration camp (German: Konzentrationslager Auschwitz, pronounced [kɔntsɛntʁaˈtsi̯oːnsˌlaːɡɐ ˈʔaʊʃvɪts] ⓘ; also KL Auschwitz or KZ Auschwitz) was a complex of over 40 concentration and extermination camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland (in a portion annexed into Germany in 1939)[3] during World War II and the Holocaust. It consisted of Auschwitz I, the main camp (Stammlager) in Oświęcim; Auschwitz II-Birkenau, a concentration and extermination camp with gas chambers; Auschwitz III-Monowitz, a labour camp for the chemical conglomerate IG Farben; and dozens of subcamps.[4] The camps became a major site of the Nazis' Final Solution to the Jewish question.
After Germany initiated World War II by invading Poland in September 1939, the Schutzstaffel (SS) converted Auschwitz I, an army barracks, into a prisoner-of-war camp.[5] The initial transport of political detainees to Auschwitz consisted almost solely of Poles (for whom the camp was initially established). For the first two years, the majority of inmates were Polish.[6] In May 1940, German criminals brought to the camp as functionaries established the camp's reputation for sadism. Prisoners were beaten, tortured, and executed for the most trivial of reasons. The first gassings—of Soviet and Polish prisoners—took place in block 11 of Auschwitz I around August 1941.
Construction of Auschwitz II began the following month, and from 1942 until late 1944 freight trains delivered Jews from all over German-occupied Europe to its gas chambers. Of the 1.3 million people sent to Auschwitz, 1.1 million were murdered. The number of victims includes 960,000 Jews (865,000 of whom were gassed on arrival), 74,000 non-Jewish Poles, 21,000 Romani, 15,000 Soviet prisoners of war, and up to 15,000 others.[7] Those not gassed were murdered via starvation, exhaustion, disease, individual executions, or beatings. Others were killed during medical experiments.
At least 802 prisoners tried to escape, 144 successfully, and on 7 October 1944, two Sonderkommando units, consisting of prisoners who operated the gas chambers, launched an unsuccessful uprising. After the Holocaust ended, only 789 Schutzstaffel personnel (no more than 15 percent) ever stood trial.[8] Several were executed, including camp commandant Rudolf Höss. The Allies' failure to act on early reports of mass murder by bombing the camp or its railways remains controversial.
As the Soviet Red Army approached Auschwitz in January 1945, toward the end of the war, the SS sent most of the camp's population west on a death march to camps inside Germany and Austria. Soviet troops entered the camp on 27 January 1945, a day commemorated since 2005 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. In the decades after the war, survivors such as Primo Levi, Viktor Frankl, and Elie Wiesel wrote memoirs of their experiences, and the camp became a dominant symbol of the Holocaust. In 1947, Poland founded the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum on the site of Auschwitz I and II, and in 1979 it was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Auschwitz is the site of the largest mass murder in a single location in history."

Prior to showing up at the place, Kerrick opens himself up to Thana. In secret, away from the others, he admits to the crime, but claims his actions were controlled by Pazuzu (a kind of partial truth).
"Pazuzu cannot watch me here in your abode, only entities you allow in can go here. Please do not speak of this outside. Do not alert Pazuzu."
Thana accepts.
Then Shiel and his friends visit the place of the crime. They ask around what happened (guards were killed, a magical item was stolen), and inquire if they can be of any help. The investigation is led by Helm, assisted by Tyr, but help is very welcome.
Most of the people here have not seen Kerrick together with the group, so Thana decided it would be best if he stayed behind. Especially since the object stolen was a mask in the form of a beak.
Nimue remarks: "As you said, this was a very violent intrusion. This man, however, has died of fear." With the revelation of the artifact, Nimue is pretty sure Kerrick is responsible, too.

Dr. Beckley taught in the Religion department at Washington and Lee University from 1974 to 1997. In 1997, Dr. Beckley helped to create and became the first Director of the Shepherd Program on Poverty and Human Capability. In 1999, Dr. Beckley was named the Fletcher Otey Thomas Professor of Religion and in 2002 he received the state of Virginia's highest award for excellence in education, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia's Outstanding Faculty Award. He retired from the W&L and the Shepherd Program Faculty in 2014. Dr. Beckley served as Vice President and President of the Society of Christian Ethics from 1999-2001 and as Acting President of Washington and Lee University in 2005-06. He served as the founding director of the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty from 2012-2017.

A DOSE OF CARBOLIC ACID.
SERIOUS ACCIDENT TO MR McDERMOTT,
A mistake fraught with serious consequences was made last evening by Mr Martin McDermott, the well-known plumber, who drank a dose of carbolic acid in mistake for his usual medicine. It seems Mr McDermott has been in low health of late, and by his doctor's orders was taking a daily dose of medicine. The bottle was kept on a shelf in his shop in Queen-street. Last evening, as he was leaving the shop, Mr McDermott went to the shelf for his medicine, took down what he thought was the bottle, and being in a hurry to catch his tram at once poured, out the usual dose—two tablespoonfuls—and gulped it down. Not till he had drunk the liquid did he realise that he had made a terrible mistake and taken carbolic acid, a strong poison. It appears that a bottle of the acid, in shape and size very like the medicine bottle, is kept for disinfecting purposes. It had been placed that afternoon on the same shelf as the medicine, and Mr McDermott, not knowing this, in his hurry had taken the wrong bottle. He at once called out to his son, James, who procured assistance, and then ran across to Mr Aickin's pharmacy for an emetic. Drs. Parkes and Dawson were summoned and attended to the patient, who was subsequently removed to his home in College Road. The services of his regular doctor, Dr. Bedford, were also requisitioned, and the three medical men held a consultation to-day. The poison taken is a very strong one, and the patient lies in a dangerous condition.
Upon inquiry this afternoon we learn that Mr McDermott is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances, though there is no change for the better.

DEATH OF MR MARTIN McDERMOTT.
It is with regret we announce the death of Mr. Martin McDermott, Plumber, a well-known old Auckland identity. On Wednesday last, it will be remembered, he took some, carbolic acid in his shop by mistake for his medicine. The poor fellow was afterwards in great agony, and the medical men called in—Drs. Bedford, Parkes and Dawson—held out little hope from the first. Mr McDermott passed away at half-past eight o'clock last night at his residence, College Road. His eldest son, Mr Martin McDennott, who is accountant at Mr Thos Wells' establishment, Cambridge, arrived from Waikato about ten minutes before his father died. Mr MeDermott was a very old colonist, having been born at the Bay of Islands in 1841. Deceased was first apprenticed to the printing trade at the old 'New Zealander' newspaper office, Shortlandstreet, and subsequently went into the plumbing business. At the outbreak of the Gabriel Gully gold rush he proceeded to Otago, where he remained for some time. On the opening of the Thames goldfields he returned to Auckland and commenced business for himself. Deceased leaves a widow and five sons and four daughters to mourn their loss. Mr McDermott was for many years connected with the Church of Christ, Ponsonby. He was also a member of the Ponsonby Bowling Club and a representative bowler. Deceased was very charitable, but unostentatious in his gifts. The funeral will leave his late residence to-morrow afternoon at two o'clock for Waikumete cemetery

The funeral of the late Mr Martin McDermott. who died last week from accidental poisoning, took place yesterday, and was very largely attended. The funeral cortege left Ponsonby for the Waikumete Cemetery, where the interment took place. The burial service was conducted by Mr Bull, of the Church of Christ, Ponsonby Road. A large number of telegrams of condolence were received from various parts of New Zealand and Australia.

Mrs. P. McDermott, an Auckland resident of 40 years standing, passed away at her residence, College-road, Ponsonby, at the age of 63 years Mrs. McDermott, who survived her late husband three years, has resided at Auckland ever since coming to New Zealand in the sixties. She leaves several grown-up sons and daughters, and a number of grandchildren. The funeral takes place at Waikumete on Sunday next.

Another of Auckland's old residents passed away at her residence, College Road, Ponsonby, last evening, in the person of Mrs. McDermott, widow of the late Mr. M. P. McDermott, at the age of 62 years. The deceased lady, who was a native of Ireland, came to the colony 40 years ago and passed most of that long period in Auckland. Mr. McDermott died some three years ago, and since that time Mrs. McDermott has been in failing health. She leaves a family of grown-up sons and daughters, and a number of grandchildren, to mourn their loss. The interment takes place at Waikumete on Sunday next.
