Consequence at The Rock the Bells International Festival Series powered by SandDisk held at Jones Beach on August 3, 2008..Few events can claim to both capture and define a movement, yet this is precisely what Rock The Bells has done since its inception in 2003. Rock The Bells is more than a music festival. It has become a genuine rite of passage for thousands of core, social, conscious, and independent Hip Hop enthusiasts, backpackers, and heads. Following in the colorful tradition and history of past Hip Hop music festivals such as Smoking Grooves and Cypress Hill?s Smoke Out, Rock The Bells is the ultimate Hip Hop platform and premiere music experience in America. Rock The Bells has established a forum of unparalleled diversity and excellence by uniting the biggest names involved with urban culture.

... and with all consequences.

SERIOUS ACCIDENT.

CASUALTY IN FREEMAN'S BAY.

MAN BURIED BY A FALL OF EARTH.

An alarming accident attended with serious consequences occurred shortly before nine o'clock this morning, at the Auckland Gas Company's reclamation works at the western end of Freeman's Bay. Mr Daniel Fallon, the wellknown contractor, is carrying out the work of cutting down the cliff on the Gas Company's property and filling in Freeman's Bay with the earth thus removed. A number of men have been for some time past at work on the face of the cliff, which is about 30ft high, breaking out the earth with picks and also blasting the harder portions of the stuff. The earth is broken down into the tip-waggons underneath, which run on a line of rails and are drawn by a locomotive.

This morning a number of waggons were standing at the foot of the cliff close to where the old footpath from the Bay over the Convent Hill to Waitemata-street used to run. The earth at this place was not very hard to work, being indurated clay, and there was no rock in it. A man named Charles Henderson, who was employed as a trimmer of the waggons and their loads, was standing in one of the waggons, just under the overhanging cliff, when suddenly, without any warning, a large portion of the clay face fell down into the waggon, burying the unfortunate man beneath its masses. The body of clay which fell was about two tons in weight.

Another man who was also standing in the vicinity was knocked down by the fall of earth, but all the injury he sustained was a bruise on the ankle. Immediately the accident occurred work was suspended and the men rushed up to the waggon, which was overturned by the weight of earth suddenly falling on it and was knocked off the rails on to its side. The legs and lower part of Henderson's body were seen sticking up out of the earth, his head and body down to his waist being buried in the hard clay. Mr Fallon on hearing the alarm given ran to the spot, and taking a pick started to free the buried man. The other men followed his example and set to work to throw the lumps of earth off the buried man, and in three or four minutes after the fall occurred Henderson was extricated.

When the earth had been removed from the unfortunate man it was seen that he was black in the face and almost suffocated, and that he was also unconscious. The fresh air restored his breathing, and Mr Fallen procured some brandy and water and got some of it down Henderson's throat to revive him.

Doctors Moir and Bedford were soon in attendance and examined the injured man. It was seen that he had a wonderful escape from instant death, for a ladder which was leaning against the waggon, and which was broken by the fall of earth, partly protected him, and he also fell in a corner of the waggon, the sides of which served to save his head and neck. He got the weight of the earth on his chest and shoulders, and the doctors found that his chest was very badly bruised, and his head and face knocked about. He did not bleed from the mouth, nor was he greatly cut, the principal injury, so far as could be seen, being to the wall of the chest.

The man was removed to the tool-store on the reclamation works, and a stretcher being made, he was carried by relays of his fellow-workmen up to the Hospital, arriving there about 10 o'clock. He was still in an unconscious state when he was received into the Hospital.

Charles Henderson is a man of about 37 or 38 years of age. He belongs to Auckland, and has only been employed on the works three or four days. He was a good workman, and was put on by Mr Fallon on this account to look after the trimming and loading of the waggons from the shoots above. Mr Fallon says that this is the most serious accident he has had during his contracting career, during which he has been engaged in many large works in this district, including portions of the Waikato and Rotorua railway lines. In this case, however, no foresight could have avoided the accident, which, says Mr Fallon, was one of those things that no man could foresee. A large portion of a soapy sort of hard clay had suddenly slipped away, without being attacked with the pick or in any other way, from the face of the cliff. Mr Fallen exercises all necessary precautions in connection with the breaking-down of the cutting, and in those portions of it which are at all dangerous, the men have means of safety from falling in the shape, of ropes suspended from the top of the cliff.

Mr Fallon says that he never expected to get Henderson out from under the fall of earth alive. He was very much afraid that the two tons or so of clay which had fallen on the workman had broken his neck.

Henderson is a single man and has a brother living at Avondale. Con. Finnerty of the Freeman's Bay Police Station, was among those promptly on the scene, and he did good work in assisting the removal of the injured man.

The medical men at the Hospital found that Henderson was suffering from very serious internal injuries. At 2 p.m. to-day he was in a very low condition, and appeared to he sinking.

The accident which happened to Charles Henderson at the Freeman's Bay reclamation on Saturday morning resulted fatally, the injured man dying in the Hospital at about 5 p.m. on the same day. When he was admitted to the Hospital it was seen that his internal injuries were severe, and no hope was held out. Through the afternoon he gradually sank, and died without re-gaining consciousness. Dr. Philson has arranged to hold an inquest at the Hospital at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning.

THE RECENT ACCIDENT.

An inquest was held at the Hospital this morning, before Dr. Philson, coroner, into the circumstances surrounding the death of the man Charles Henderson, who was killed at the Freeman's Bay Reclamation on Saturday. Evidence in accordance with the facts already published was given, and the jury returned the verdict, "That deceased was accidentally killed by a fall of earth, and that no blame is attachable to anyone."
