Connected Space
In topology and related branches of mathematics, a connected space is a topological space which cannot be represented as the disjoint union of two or more nonempty open spaces. Connectedness is one of the principal topological properties that is used to distinguish topological spaces. A stronger notion is that of a path-connected space, which is a space where any two points can be joined by a path.
It is usually easy to think about what is not connected. A simple example would be a space consisting of two rectangles, each of which is a space and not adjoined to the other. The space is not connected since two rectangles are disjoint. Another good example is a space with an annulus removed. The space is not connected since you cannot connect two points, one inside the annulus and the other outside; hence the term "connect".

Still connected to the rail network, despite not being used for a good 15 years, the South Staffordshire Line can be seen here curving towards Lichfield City.
Hopefully it stays connected, and sees some use at some point in the future. I'm amazed the line has lasted this long relatively untouched.
Built in 1906, the Nevada Northern connected the enormous pit mines at Ruth with the smelter on the old McGill Ranch, and then with the main line at Cobre for an overall run of not quite 150 miles. After considerable repair and restoration, the Nevada Northern began carrying passengers again in 1986.

This is a shot I took months ago, really liked, but could never quite process happily. I have been trying out a new processing technique of RAW files, using only curves. It is new to me, but well described by Michael Fry in his online ebooklet. It seems to do the trick, and makes sense to my way of thinking. All the Lightroom 3 presets are at 0, such as contrast, brightness, saturation etc. The tone curve is linear and therefore the initial RAW file looks very flat. However, all the adjustments pretty much come from altering the tone curve. This boosts contrast, brightness and saturation in one tool, and avoids cross adjusting the image. It takes a bit of practise but I think it works well.
The shapes and tonal contrasts to the rock here were calling out for a shot, and I loved that swirl of white into black. I also made a B&W version of this which I might post later on for comparison.
Having slipped on the stairs last week, I fell badly and dislocated my shoulder (again) as well as brusied most of limbs and back. A minute of flailing around finally resulted in my shoulder going back in. Not pleasant. Pain killers and rest are helping though. Basically flickr and shooting in general has slowed right down.

The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift located in Scotland, UK, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. It is named after the nearby town of Falkirk which is in central Scotland. The two canals were previously connected by a series of 11 locks, but by the 1930s these had fallen into disuse, were filled in and the land built upon them.
The plan to regenerate the canals of central Scotland to reconnect Glasgow with Edinburgh was led by British Waterways with support and funding from seven local authorities, the Scottish Enterprise Network, the European Regional Development Fund and the Millennium Commission. It was decided early on to create a dramatic 21st century landmark structure to reconnect the canals, instead of simply recreating the historic lock flight. Designs were submitted for a boat lift to link the canals, with the Falkirk Wheel design winning. As with many Millennium Commission projects the site includes a visitors' centre containing a shop, café and exhibition centre.
The difference in the levels of the two canals at the wheel is 24 metres (79 ft), roughly equivalent to the height of an eight-storey building. The Union Canal, however, is 11m higher than the aqueduct which meets the wheel, and boats must pass through a pair of locks to descend from this canal onto the aqueduct at the top of the wheel. The aqueduct could not have been positioned higher due to conflicts with the historically important Antonine Wall.

Surrounded by 3,000–5,000 meter peaks, Svaneti is the highest inhabited area in the Caucasus. Four of the 10 highest peaks of the Caucasus are located in the region. The highest mountain in Georgia, Mount Shkhara at 5,201 meters (17,059 feet), is located in the province. Other prominent peaks include Tetnuldi (4,974m./16,319ft.), Shota Rustaveli (4,960m./16,273ft.), Mt. Ushba (4,710m./15,453ft.), Ailama (4,525m./14,842ft.), as well as Lalveri, Latsga and others.
The Ushguli villages contain buildings that are part of the UNESCO Heritage site of Upper Svaneti. Altitude claims for Ushguli villages vary from 2086 to 2200 metre and it is sometimes referred to as the highest village in Europe.
It is located at the foot of Shkhara one of the higher Caucasian summits. For six months of the year snow covers the whole area and often the road to Mestia is closed. Typical Svanetian protective towers are found throughout the village.
The most notable feature of the settlements is the abundance of towers, especially in Mestia and the frontier villages, such as Ushguli and Latali. These towers usually have from three to five stories and the thickness of the walls decreases, giving the towers a slender, tapering profile. The houses themselves are usually two-storied; the ground floor is a single hall with an open hearth and accommodation for both people and domestic animals, the latter being separated by a wooden partition, which is often lavishly decorated. A corridor annex helped the thermal insulation of the building. The upper floor was used by the human occupants in the summer, and also served as a store for fodder and tools. A door at this level provided access to the tower, which was also connected with the corridor that protected the entrance.
