Swissair Flight 111
Swissair Flight 111 (SR111, SWR111) was a Swissair McDonnell Douglas MD-11 on a scheduled airline flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, United States to Cointrin International Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. This flight was also a codeshare flight with Delta Air Lines.
On Wednesday, 2 September 1998, the aircraft used for the flight, registered HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the tiny fishing and tourist communities of Peggys Cove and Bayswater. All 229 people on board died—the highest death toll of any aviation accident involving a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and the second-highest of any air disaster to occur in Canada, after Arrow Air Flight 1285. This is one of only two hull losses of the passenger configured MD-11, along with China Airlines Flight 642.
The initial search and rescue response, crash recovery operation, and resulting investigation by the Government of Canada took over four years and cost CAD 57 million (at that time approximately US$38 million). The Transportation Safety Board of Canada's (TSB) official report of their investigation stated that flammable material used in the aircraft's structure allowed a fire to spread beyond the control of the crew, resulting in a loss of control and the crash of the aircraft.
Swissair Flight 111 was known as the "UN shuttle" due to its popularity with United Nations officials; the flight often carried business executives, scientists, and researchers
Aircraft
The aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, serial number 48448 registered HB-IWF, was manufactured in 1991 and Swissair was its only operator. It bore the title of Vaud, in honor of the Swiss canton of the same name. The airframe had a total of 36,041 hours. The three engines were Pratt & Whitney 4462s. The cabin was configured with 241 seats (12 six-abreast first-, 49 seven-abreast business-, and 180 nine-abreast economy-class). First- and business-class seats were equipped with an in seat in-flight entertainment system, installed at some point after initial entry into service. (Wikipedia) AJ470BN

About
I've been wanting to visit this place (Point Halloran) for a few months now, Matt told me the tide is going to be good. This is a Sunrise, taken this morning.
So I organized a Flickr meet this morning and mother nature came to the party.
I really love how the clouds move during the 30 or so seconds, really adds some interesting texture.
Oh, and by the way, I had my camera serviced on Friday, sensor cleaned, so no 'dust spot' cloning this time ;)
This shot is 3 RAW files, shot in 'M' mode using the bulb exposure for each shot, the third exposure was close to 35 seconds.
- ISO 100, f9, 34 seconds, 16mm
- Sigma 10-20mm Lens.
- Tripod.
Processing
- HDR, 3 exposures [2,0,+2EV] shot in RAW/ISO100 at f/9, using Sigma 10-20mm lens.
- Saturation tweaking in Photoshop to bring out the colours, and darken the sky.
- Various cloning to remove some small lights in the distance
- Noise reduction in Lightroom 2.0
- Added a upsharp layer.
HDR
- Tone mapped using Photomatrix HDR, in detail mode.
- Saturation for highlights.
- Slightly tweaked the yellow/reds.

Look at the size of that door! The design really is striking. Its carbon fiber and aluminum body is enormous at 19 feet long, yet it's just a two-door coupe. Signature round headlights blend into a fully illuminated grille. Even the hood ornament and center trim piece on the hood light up. The doors open in a scissor fashion just like a Lamborghini. At the back, the car features OLED taillights. The wheels even have active aerodynamic panels, and apparently the Pirelli tires can, at least conceptually, change their pattern and contact patch for various driving conditions.
Under the sizable yet slinky skin is a fully electric powertrain. It features four motors, one for each wheel, to provide full torque vectoring. They deliver a lot of torque, too, at 1,106 pound-feet. Bentley says the EXP 100 GT should hit 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds and have a top speed of 186 mph. The battery pack can provide up to 435 miles of range, and can be charged to 80% capacity in 15 minutes. The car can be driven fully autonomously or manually.
The EXP 100 GT naturally has an over-the-top interior to match the exterior and powertrain. It can be configured to seat two to four people. It's trimmed with 5,000-year-old wood salvaged from peat bogs, and copper has been infused with it. Fabric trim features fiber optics woven in for illuminated patterns. The leather is not from animals, but rather created from byproducts of wine making. Crystal is featured heavily, too, and it is used for getting information about the onboard AI. The AI system works to keep you comfortable, and to do so, it monitors your mood with biometrics, even detecting your blood pressure. It can alter the amount of light in the cabin, the temperature and other settings. A unique feature of the car is the ability to simulate lighting conditions from past drives if the current weather is dreary. The car even has a unique scent that can be applied to the cabin that's a mix of sandalwood and moss.

Lanzarote is an island shaped by volcanoes, the wind and the art of César Manrique. Among its landscapes of fire, La Geria appears, where small volcanic stone walls protect the vines from the air with the intention of adapting nature to the production of Malvasia wine. To understand how to get this unexpected sweet white wine that is born from volcanic ashes.
A DETERMINING ERUPTION
Between 1730 and 1736, Lanzarote suffered the longest eruption recorded in the Canary archipelago. The Mountains of Fire covered the most fertile area of the island in black, leaving an inhospitable terrain. The process of the so-called Timanfaya eruption began in the Caldera de los Cuervos and ended with the explosions at Montaña Colorada and Montaña de las Nueces, in the south central part of Lanzarote. Nobody could imagine then that the badlands would give way to a unique wine-growing environment where the volcanic ash would serve to preserve the humidity of the crops. In it, a perfect succession of stone shelters protect the vines that sprout from crevices dug in the lapilli, demonstrating how powerful nature is and configuring one of the most particular fields of labor in the world in which the peasants ally themselves with the lands. harsh, trade winds and scant rains to make wine.
THE VINEYARD OF THE IMPOSSIBLE
The Protected Natural Landscape of La Geria extends between the towns of Tías, Masdache and Yaiza, making up the Golden Mile of Lanzarote wineries. A place more typical of another world that immerses the visitor in a calm as deep as that of its furrows.

I wanted to take a picture of some lavender, so researched some lavender farms, but I had a bit of a panic about this shot, as having telephoned before we went, it turned out they had started the lavender harvest! so we were on borrowed time. Thankfully the weather was good to us and the other 8 photographers who were all stood in the fields looking at this amazing sight and smelling it!! the scent was incredible!
This is a wonderful place to visit, the owners are very accomodating and incredibly friendly. But it is always courteous to ask to visit out of hours many didn't.

Built in 1944, Ready 4 Duty is a Douglas R4D-6S, the U.S. Navy's version of the legendary DC-3 and C-47. She was modified to carry depth charges on external racks mounted under the fuselage between the main landing gear. Assigned to the U.S. Navy Atlantic Special Service Squadron and conducted airborne search radar and sonar evaluation as well as training airborne specialists and operators.
"Ready 4 Duty" served in the Caribbean from Texas to Guantanamo, Cuba; in South America as far down as Rio; across the South Atlantic to Dakar; in the eastern Atlantic up to Baffin Bay and northern Newfoundland; and across the northern hemisphere to Greenland and Iceland. During operational patrols in February 1945, R4D was one of 20 in a squadron that surprised a surfaced German U-Boat off the coast of Brazil and sank it! After the war ended, the aircraft was retained in service and assigned to Naval Headquarters Berlin. Later, it returned to the U.S. and served in an electronic warfare training role.
The last of its kind still flying, the aircraft is a centrepiece of the Dallas/Fort Worth Wing of the Commemorative Air Force and is now configured to demonstrate several World War II history lessons, including sub-chaser, transport, hospital, and jump aircraft.

Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langham_Place_(Hong_Kong):
Langham Place is a commercial complex and shopping centre in Mong Kok, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The official opening was on 25 January 2005. The complex occupies two blocks defined by Argyle Street, Portland Street, Shantung Street and Reclamation Street. Shanghai Street separates the two portions of the complex, which are connected via two overhead walkways. A hotel is on one side of the development while the commercial elements are located on the other side.
The complex was the result of an urban renewal project under Land Development Corporation, later known as Urban Renewal Authority (URA). Several city blocks, including the old "Bird Street" marketplace, were demolished to make way for the commercial complex.
Langham Place Tower has a gross floor area of 17,000 m2 (180,000 sq ft), and comprises a 59-storey office tower, a 15-level shopping centre with two basement levels, a 665-room hotel and a car park with 250 parking spaces. The complex is connected to the Mong Kok station of the MTR via an underground passage (Exit C3).
Due to the high price of land and the higher yield on retail property in Hong Kong, the Langham Place Mall departs from the common Western model of the flat shopping mall. It is the second "vertical mall" in Hong Kong. The exterior of the mall is characterised by a multi-faceted façade of yellow fissured Brazilian granite stretching from street level to the roof. Another distinctive feature is the 9-storey glass atrium which lets in natural lighting and allows passersby to look through the middle of the building.
The Mall's 56,000 m2 (600,000 sq ft) of retail space is configured over 15 levels, with 5,600 m2 (60,000 sq ft) of space per level from the second basement level to fourth level; and 3,700 m2 (40,000 sq ft) of space per level from level 5 upwards. There is a food court on level 4 and a cinema run by CINEMA CITY on level 8 and an "indoor alfresco dining" area on the top floor.
The mall was designed by the Los Angeles-based firm Jerde Partnership and opened for business in November 2004.
Architectural Features
Happy Man – The 2,700-kilogram sculpture commissioned from American designer Larry Bell, at the front entrance of the arcade.
Xpresscalators – The longest escalators within a shopping mall in the territory. A pair of them is located on the 4th floor leading up to the 8th floor, where another pair leads to the 12th floor. Together they allow shoppers to travel 76 m (249 ft) up to the top of the mall quickly and conveniently, thus reducing the "horizontal drift" of shoppers.
The Spiral – A section of the shopping mall from the 9th to 12th floor of the building, which corkscrews around the upper set of Xpresscalators.
Digital Sky – An architectural feature on level 13 where computerised images are projected onto the ceiling of the mall. The lighting was originally designed and programmed by Jason Saunders of Photonic-Motion in Melbourne Australia, in sequence with video on a Wholehog 2 PC running midi time code.
Detail of light. Chandeliers used to carry candles, hence the name. But, it was Napoleon himself, who wanted the ability to irradiate his rooms in different inclinations so that he could participate in the his various works. BuNo 44-27183 was originally built as a P-38L, but was later modified into a F-5A, the World War II designation for a photo reconnaissance Lightning, with a new nose. The aircraft was delivered to the USAAF in June 1945, too late to see action during the war. With the P-38 not part of the postwar USAAF's plans, 44-27183 was declared surplus and stored at Kingman, Arizona. The USAAF's loss was an aerial surveyer's gain, however: not only was the aircraft already fitted with a camera nose, zooming around in a P-38 rather than, say, a Piper Cub during aerial surveys probably helped the purchase. Five aerial survey companies would fly 44-27183, starting with Kargl Aerial Surveys of Midland, Texas. Along the way, 44-27183 was modified with a longer canopy for two people, a slightly different camera nose, and pressurization for the crew.
In 1969, the last aerial survey company to own the aircraft, Pacific Aerial Surveys of Seattle, sold the aircraft to a warbird collector. In 1973, another collector, David Boyd, bought the aircraft and partly returned it to its World War II configuration as a P-38L—it had a gun nose, but retained the two-seat cockpit. The Yanks Air Museum inquired about obtaining the aircraft in 1981, but events kept happening to keep the museum from getting it. The aircraft was instead passed to the Wien Brothers, the owners of Wien Air Alaska, but they were also having problems: 44-27183 had been restored to flying condition, but it was having engine issues. The Wien Brothers decided to sell the aircraft to Yanks, but didn't know where the museum was; as it turned out, 44-27183 had been forced to land at Chino, California, so all Yanks had to do was tow it across the tarmac!
As actual F-5s are extremely rare, Yanks restored 44-27183 to its photo nose configuration, ironed out the engine problems, and returned it to flight in 1996. It has been at the museum ever since. It was quite a surprise to see a F-5 configured P-38; I wasn't sure there were any left that still had a camera nose. It carries the colors and a Donald Duck emblem of the 6th Reconnaissance Group, assigned to the Southwest Pacific and Okinawa during World War II.
Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langham_Place_(Hong_Kong):
Xpresscalators – The longest escalators within a shopping mall in the territory. A pair of them is located on the 4th floor leading up to the 8th floor, where another pair leads to the 12th floor. Together they allow shoppers to travel 76 m (249 ft) up to the top of the mall quickly and conveniently, thus reducing the "horizontal drift" of shoppers.

The portal is configured by means of five semicircular archivolts decorated with checkered patterns, baquetones and, on the innermost thread, fleshy acanthus leaves.
They rest on angled columns topped with decorated capitals in which, on the left side, a minstrel-like scene is represented in which some dancers dance to the sound of the notes of a rebec and a psaltery that are played by other characters. In addition, the episode of Samson tearing the lion's jaws apart, very recurrent in the Romanesque of northern Palencia, is distinguished.

WHAT'S NEW?
The 2012 MINI sees no major changes following its modest model-year 2011 freshening, knowing:
a redesigned front bumper that helps the MINI meet new pedestrian-safety regulations. The lower grille and new fog-light surrounds have more pronounced, contoured borders. MINI models feature a new horizontal bar in the lower air inlet, while Cooper S models prominent (and functional) brake ducts that can be trimmed in chrome. There are new wheel designs in 15-, 16-, and 17-inch sizes. The brake lights now use LEDs, and the optional xenon headlights now swivel in turns. Reverse lights migrate to the lower bumper. Updates to the interior will help appease those, who found the Mini’s ergonomics less than friendly. The audio controls have been consolidated under the large center speedometer, and all secondary controls are now finished in matte black rather than silver, as are the steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls. New audio and navigation systems are available, with the latter using a 6.5-inch LCD screen in the MINI's central speedometer. With MINI Connected software, iPhone and iPod users will be able to watch videos on the display while the car is parked, or see album cover art while playing music. It's a control interface used in conjunction with an Apple iPhone. Users download the MINI Connected application to their phone. The app allows users to conduct Google local searches for restaurants, movie theaters, and other places. It also can display news feeds, access social networks, and allow passengers to listen to Internet radio. The screen also will be able to display contact information from a compatible cell phone connected via Bluetooth.

THERE'S A LOT TO LOVE HERE!
It used to be that luxury cars were big. The more luxurious, the bigger. But with premium hatchbacks, buyers have shown that luxury needn't equal size. In fact, many (particularly in Europe) have demonstrated that they're willing to pay a considerable premium to have the luxuries they'd expect from the larger cars they're giving up with the smaller ones they're adopting. Of course, you can really make any MINI your own through the extensive options list of design, comfort, and technology features. The question is, just how much are you willing to pay?

THE MINI
Sometimes it’s just nice to be back where you feel most comfortable. Those were my thoughts as I slipped behind the wheel of a a lightly spec’d 2012 MINI. No this isn’t some chopped coupe or puffed up crossover. This is the car (or at least the shape) that owes more to the original MINI than any other. So much so that BMW simply refers to it as “the MINI” internally.
Over the past 50 years, MINI have become one of the must-have cars for sports car enthusiasts. The 2012 MINI is simply the best MINI produced to date! I opted for MINI’s "bespoke personalization program". My own MINI ordered on March 3rd will be supplied by my personal MINI manager around the beginning of May.
Most of all, my new MINI will remind me why I do what I do, why I love MINI's and why I love seeing more on the road every day.
Small, efficient, athletic and endlessly fun, they are still the best way to bring a smile to one’s face.
MINI. MORE POKE WITH LESS SMOKE!

I'd never seen anyone use what appears to be a tripod foot on the telephoto lens as a mounting for a second camera. However, this was only one of several such rigs I saw that week.
I suspect that the smaller, co-axial camera is used for video, but I'd appreciate comments from anyone familiar with cameras configured this way.

A massive snowstorm slammed the northeast Wednesday night into Thursday morning dumping one to two feet of snow and leading to major disruptions on the regions railroads. While some freight carriers ran like normal others such as the P&W cancelled all Wednesday night and Thursday morning road freights and locals. On the passenger side the MBTA kept running its already covid reduced schedule with some special snow buster sets clearing the routes in the early AM hours. Amtrak meanwhile preemptively cancelled all Acela service and ran only a few regional trains using three train sets out of Boston configured unusually like this.
Here is the first southbound of the day, train 171, racing through Cranston Yard near MP 180.3 already 40 min late. Behind the standard ACS64 electric is a P42 diesel that is online and doing all the work. You'll notice the photographs are both down on the electric so all it is doing is acting as a glorified cab car, not even pulling power from the wire for HEP. Why? Good question, and I'd honestly like to know the thinking behind this too!

About an hour into witnessing the majestic, ultra-modern skyline of Vancouver awaken to a new day from Stanley Park, a local resident of the ecosystem flew into my composition. I could only assume It wanted to quietly enjoy the peaceful sunrise as well.
The goose didn’t appear too shy as I shifted my camera gear to get closer to it. I thought its presence added a bit of natural beauty to contrast with the brilliant glass and concrete structures reflected in Coal Harbour.
Once situated and my composition was configured, the goose began to perform what remarkably resembled a morning exercise routine! The extension of its wings looked like a human who stretches his or her arms at full length. Afterwards, it would fold its wings back and call out into the harbour with a loud squawk. It repeated this action a few times.
Funnily enough, a few meters away from me, a small group of people had commenced what appeared to be a tàiji (tai chi) routine of their own as well, starting off the morning in the same manner as the goose.
Later, I was surprised to see I had captured the moment when the goose had initiated its avian tàiji. The image felt worthy of sharing. Enjoy.
